The two products with the clearest current specifications here illustrate why headline gallon ratings are not directly interchangeable: CoralVue publishes separate heavy-, medium-, and light-bioload limits for the Reef Octopus Classic 110-INT, while NYOS gives the Quantum 120 a broad 100–500 litre (25–125 gallon) range.
Those are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled, same-water laboratory test. Current comparison guides likewise rely on specifications, owner-review patterns, or rule-based recommendations rather than head-to-head testing. Use the data below to match a skimmer to your system instead of choosing the largest advertised number.

What a protein skimmer does
Protein skimming, also called foam fractionation, removes dissolved and particulate organic material before it decomposes in the aquarium. A pump creates fine bubbles in a reaction chamber. Organic compounds adsorb to the bubble surfaces; the bubbles rise into a stable foam, and that foam carries concentrated waste into a collection cup.

The Tropical Marine Centre 2024 catalogue describes the process as fine bubbles rising in a closed contact column against countercurrent water flow. It lists suspended-solid and protein removal, clearer water through removal of humic and phenolic compounds, increased oxygenation, and pH stabilization as stated purposes of skimming. Those are catalogue descriptions, not independently quantified performance results.

Red Sea describes a skimmer as physical filtration that removes suspended or dissolved organic waste into a cup. Its REEFER Skimmer manual says: “A successful reef aquarium should have both a regularly cleaned mechanical filter and an efficient protein skimmer as the first and second stage of the water treatment process.” That is the manufacturer’s guidance for its product line, not a universal clinical or academic standard.
Are there academic-level tests proving one skimmer is superior?
No independent, market-wide result establishes a single superior model in the evidence available for this comparison. A forum user asked whether “legit academic level tests” exist; that Reddit thread is an example of reader concern, not a representative survey or scientific study: r/ReefTank discussion.
Published “best” lists should therefore be read according to their method:

ReefRig’s guide says its recommendations use a rule engine and manufacturer or distributor specifications rather than hands-on reviews. Treat both as useful screening tools, not proof of superiority.

How to size a skimmer correctly
Start with the water that the skimmer will actually process and the amount of waste your animals produce. A lightly stocked fish-only system and a heavily fed reef with many fish can require very different skimming even when their display dimensions are identical.
1. Calculate the real system volume
Include the water in the display and sump, then account for water displaced by rock, sand, equipment, and operating level. Do not substitute the display’s marketing volume for the water volume. If a maker defines capacity differently, preserve that definition when comparing models.
2. Classify your bioload
- Heavy: many fish for the water volume, frequent feeding, or a high nutrient-export target.
- Medium: a typical mixed reef with regular feeding and a moderate fish population.
- Light: fewer fish, lighter feeding, or a system where the skimmer is supplemental to other export methods.
These labels are practical planning categories, not laboratory standards. The same skimmer can behave differently as feeding and stocking change.
3. Match the maker’s rating method
CoralVue’s Reef Octopus Classic 110-INT page lists 60 gallons for a heavy bioload, 90 gallons for medium, and 130 gallons for light bioload. All three figures exclude sump volume. A 90-gallon display with a sump is therefore not automatically a “90-gallon” match under that specification.

NYOS lists the Quantum 120 for 100–500 litres (25–125 gallons), with no equivalent heavy/medium/light breakdown on the cited page. You cannot assume its 125-gallon upper figure represents the same stocking load as CoralVue’s 130-gallon light-bioload figure.
4. Leave room for adjustment
If your system is near a maker’s maximum, choose based on the heavier realistic load rather than the most favorable light-load number. Oversizing is not automatically harmless: a skimmer that is too large for the available organic load may collect inconsistently and require frequent adjustment. Undersizing can leave you dependent on water changes and other export methods.
Physical fit matters as much as capacity
Before ordering, measure the sump compartment and the path needed to remove the cup. Confirm the skimmer’s operating depth, total height, body clearance, drain routing, and access to the adjustment controls. A model that fits the gallon rating but cannot sit at its specified water level will not be a practical match.
- Installation format: verify whether the model is intended for your in-sump, hang-on-back, or internal arrangement. The Classic 110-INT is identified by CoralVue as an in-sump skimmer; confirm the Quantum 120’s current installation requirements on its product page.
- Footprint: compare the complete base dimensions with baffles, return pumps, probes, and dosing hardware.
- Height: include the lid and cup, not just the reaction body. Leave enough vertical clearance to lift the cup off.
- Water depth: use the manufacturer’s recommended operating range, not an improvised depth that happens to fit.
- Drain and cup access: a drain can reduce emptying frequency, but only if the hose can be routed safely and the cup can still be removed.

The Classic 110-INT is the easier model to size when you know your bioload because CoralVue publishes three explicit scenarios. Its 60-gallon heavy-load figure is the relevant ceiling for a densely stocked system; the 90-gallon medium and 130-gallon light figures are not interchangeable with it.

Its 7–8-inch recommended sump depth is a concrete installation requirement. Measure the running water level in the skimmer chamber, including the level reached during return-pump shutdown, before deciding that the 19.70-inch height will fit.
What the hardware tells you
The Aquatrance 1000s pinwheel pump is specified at 9 W with a 420 L/h (15 SCFH) air draw. CoralVue cautions that air and water results vary with aquarium setup, so these figures should not be treated as guaranteed output in every sump. The gate valve provides a way to tune the water level, while the diffuser and silencer address bubble management and operating noise. The quick-release cup and drain are practical when the skimmer is positioned where regular cleaning is easy.
Fit limitations
The 10.2 × 6.9-inch footprint can be restrictive in a crowded sump. The 5-inch body and 19.70-inch total height also need clearance around adjacent equipment and above the cabinet. Capacity does not override these physical constraints.

NYOS lists an 8 W pump and says air and water quantities can be adjusted separately. Independent adjustment can help you tune foam production after changing water level or feed load, but the manufacturer page does not provide a same-condition removal rate that can be compared directly with the Classic 110-INT’s air-draw figure.

Setup and tuning checklist
- Confirm the running water level. Measure with return pumps operating and again during normal shutdown conditions. Keep the skimmer at the maker’s specified depth.
- Place the body level. A tilted skimmer can change the internal water column and make the adjustment unstable.
- Route the drain safely. If your cup has a drain, lead it to a container that cannot back-siphon or overflow unnoticed.
- Start with conservative air and water settings. Make one adjustment at a time and observe the foam head before changing another control.
- Allow the foam head to settle after maintenance. Cleaning, new tubing, additives, or a water change can temporarily alter foam behavior; avoid chasing every short-term fluctuation with large adjustments.
- Record the setting that produces a stable collection. Mark the water-depth and adjustment position so you can restore it after servicing.
Cleaning and maintenance
Empty the cup before it becomes difficult to lift safely, and clean the neck so foam can rise consistently. The Red Sea REEFER manual states that an uncleaned layer of organic sludge in the neck can reduce foam production by 30–40 percent in that product line. Do not generalize that percentage to every skimmer, but treat a dirty neck as a credible cause of declining collection.
During a deeper service, inspect the air intake, silencer, venturi path, impeller, cup seal, and drain hose. CoralVue lists an Aquatrance skimmer impeller as compatible with the Classic 110-INT, which gives owners a documented replacement route. Compatibility must still be checked against the exact pump and model revision.
Common problems and practical fixes
Foam collapses or the cup stays empty
- Check that the skimmer is sitting at its specified depth; water level is often the first variable to verify.
- Inspect the air line and silencer for salt creep or blockage.
- Clean the neck and cup, then allow the foam head to re-form before making another adjustment.
- Consider whether the current organic load is low relative to the skimmer’s rating; a light-load system may simply produce less skimmate.
The skimmer overflows into the cup
- Confirm that the water level has not risen above the normal operating mark.
- Return the gate valve or water-control setting toward a lower internal level and make small changes.
- Check whether recent cleaning, additives, medication, or other water changes altered surface tension.
- Use the cup drain only with a secure collection container; an uncontrolled overflow can empty water from the sump.
Microbubbles enter the display
- Verify that the diffuser and outlet are assembled correctly.
- Check for a loose cup seal or air leak around fittings.
- Confirm that the skimmer is not operating outside its recommended depth.
- Allow a newly cleaned or newly installed unit time to stabilize before changing several variables at once.
How to read prices and availability
Neither manufacturer specification set cited here establishes a current retail price, inventory status, warranty term, or regional availability. Those details change by country and seller, so check the exact model and revision at the time you buy. A listing for a different body size, pump, or regional plug is not evidence that the model you need is in stock.
