The best litter box for a small apartment is the largest box your cat can comfortably use that still leaves room to enter, clean and service it. Measure the available floor area, compare the complete outside footprint (including lid, door or waste-drawer clearance), and then check whether your cat can turn around and dig. A tiny box that your cat avoids is not a space-saving solution.

How to choose a litter box for a small apartment
Measure before shopping. Record the width and depth of the floor area, the height under shelves or counters, and the space needed to open a lid, pull a drawer or remove a waste container. Leave enough room for your cat to approach the entrance without squeezing past furniture. A corner can use otherwise wasted floor, but a corner shape can also reduce the usable litter bed.

Match the entrance to the cat
- Top entry: can keep litter inside better, but the height and opening may be difficult for kittens, large cats, older cats or cats with mobility limitations.
- Front or lowered entry: is easier to reach, while the lower opening can allow more litter to escape.
- Covered: hides the visible mess but can make the interior harder to inspect and may concentrate odor.

The top opening and raised sides are aimed at keeping kicked litter from spreading across a small floor. In a narrow apartment, that can be more useful than shaving another inch off the outside measurement.
Measure upward as well as across: the cat needs a clear route to the opening, and you need room to lift or remove the top for cleaning. This is a poor default for a very large cat, a kitten still learning to climb, or a cat with mobility limitations. Cats.com explicitly notes that larger cats may not fit as well. Treat the listed dimensions as the product’s outside size, not as a promise of interior turning room.
2. Van Ness High-Sided Corner Litter Box — best for a corner
The Van Ness High-Sided Corner Litter Box measures 18.25 x 18.5 x 11 inches in Cats.com’s listing. Its triangular footprint can tuck into a corner that a rectangular pan would waste, and its high sides help with spray and kicked litter.

Corner efficiency has a cost: the angled walls can leave less continuous litter-bed area than the measurements suggest. Put a paper outline on the floor before buying and check that your cat can stand, turn and dig without pressing into the sides. Keep the entrance facing the room rather than wedged against a wall.

Do not count the storage as free space. The 26-inch length, plus the shelter, must fit with enough room to remove the pan or reach every cleaning surface. It is a sensible choice when consolidated storage improves the apartment’s layout, not when the available wall is shorter than the unit.
4. Litter-Robot 4 — best for people who value automation
The official manufacturer page lists a 22 x 27-inch footprint and showed a starting price of $699 when accessed October 13, 2026. Cats.com lists the overall dimensions as 27 x 22 x 29.5 inches. Use the larger height figure when checking shelves, window ledges and overhead cabinets.
Automation can reduce routine scooping, but it does not make a large machine disappear. Check the place where the waste container is opened, the route for carrying supplies, the electrical outlet and the clearance needed to remove parts for cleaning. Compare the complete occupied footprint with a simple pan plus the floor area you would otherwise use for a scoop and waste bin. The price and availability are manufacturer listing details and can change.

Catster names this its overall pick and describes dual-purpose storage. Its listed dimensions are 29.73 x 17.5 x 17.64 inches. That almost 30-inch length is the decisive fact for a small apartment: it may replace a separate storage unit, but it is not a universal compact answer.

Verify that the cover can be removed or opened fully where you plan to place it. A covered box that cannot be reached from above becomes difficult to scoop, inspect and wash. Catster’s ranking reflects that publication’s review work; it is not a test performed for this article.
6. Open high-sided pan — best for cats that need visibility
An open, high-sided pan is the safest design category when your cat refuses a lid or top entrance. It gives a clear view and usually the simplest cleaning access. Pick the largest interior that fits rather than the shallowest outside shell. Place a litter mat at the exit and orient the high wall toward the direction where your cat kicks most often.
This option exposes more litter and odor to the room than a covered design. It is therefore a fit decision: easy access and visibility in exchange for less concealment.

7. Front-entry covered box — best compromise for access and containment
A front-entry covered box can split the difference between an open pan and a top-entry design. A lowered doorway helps a cat that cannot climb, while the roof and side walls contain some scatter. Confirm that the doorway is wide enough for the cat’s shoulders and that the cover can be removed without moving the entire unit.
Because the opening is low, litter can track out more readily than with top entry. Enclosure also limits your view of wet spots and stool, so cleaning access matters as much as the exterior footprint.
8. Low-entry senior-friendly box — best for limited mobility
Choose this configuration when age, arthritis, injury or kitten size makes a tall step unsafe. The entrance should be the first measurement you check, followed by interior length and width. Keep the route to it unobstructed and avoid placing it where a door can swing into the opening.

The trade-off is containment: a low front wall cannot stop as much spray or kicked litter as a tall-sided box. A larger mat and more frequent visual checks can be more practical than forcing a cat into a design it cannot comfortably enter.
9. Compact furniture-style enclosure — best when every object must earn floor space
A furniture-style enclosure can hide the pan and hold a scoop or litter supplies. Before choosing one, measure the actual exterior, interior opening, door swing and the space needed to lift the pan out. Storage is useful only if you can still reach the litter bed and clean all corners.
Do not confuse visual concealment with odor control. A closed cabinet can make an apartment look tidier while concentrating odor if cleaning is postponed or ventilation is poor.

No source establishes that any of these boxes makes a room smell-free. Cats.com and Catster both treat cleaning as part of the recommendation, and Cats.com notes that enclosed boxes can concentrate odor. A box that hides waste from view can also hide the signal that it needs attention.
- Choose a location with enough clearance to inspect and clean the box without dragging it into the room.
- Remove waste and soiled litter before guests arrive, following the litter manufacturer’s handling directions.
- Wash accessible surfaces and dry them completely before adding fresh litter.
- Check the mat, nearby floor and wall for tracked litter or spray; containment is never perfect.
- Keep ventilation and the cat’s normal access in mind. Do not shut the cat out of the box just to hide it.

- Operating clearance: open every panel, remove the pan and reach the back corners without hitting a wall or appliance.
- Cat clearance: the cat needs to enter, turn, dig and leave without squeezing.
- Approach: keep the doorway visible and free of doors, cords and storage bins.
- Noise and power: for an automatic model, verify an outlet and consider whether operating sounds could discourage use.
- Cleaning route: make sure you can carry litter and waste out without crossing the cat’s food and water area.

Buying by outside dimensions alone

Choosing top entry for a cat that cannot climb
Problem: a scatter-control design becomes an avoidance problem. Fix: use a front or lowered entry and accept that a larger mat may be needed.
Assuming a cover solves odor
Problem: waste is hidden rather than removed, and enclosed air can hold odor. Fix: select a model you can inspect and clean easily, then keep cleaning routine.
