For most beginners who want a small freshwater shrimp colony, red cherry shrimp—or another single color line of Neocaridina davidi—are the best place to start. They are relatively adaptable and readily bred, but the right choice depends on your measured water conditions, whether you want a breeding colony or an algae grazer, and whether fish in the tank may eat shrimp. Even small shrimp need an established, stable aquarium.
Which small aquarium shrimp should you choose?
Compare likely choices by their water needs, adult size, care demands, breeding behavior and fit with tankmates. These are not interchangeable shrimp: a species suited to ordinary freshwater may be a poor match for a specialist setup, and vice versa.

| Shrimp | Best fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Red cherry and other Neocaridina davidi color forms | Most first-time keepers seeking a visible, breeding freshwater colony | Different color forms can interbreed. Choose one line if you want to maintain a particular color, and provide a mature, stable aquarium. Aqueon; Aquarium Co-Op |
| Amano shrimp (Caridina multidentata) | Keepers prioritizing algae grazing over a self-reproducing freshwater colony | They are larger than dwarf Neocaridina. Their larvae need brackish or saltwater to develop, so they do not complete their life cycle in freshwater. ShrimpGuide, June 14, 2026 |
| Ghost shrimp (Palaemonetes spp.) | Someone looking for a low-cost scavenger | The common name can cover uncertain livestock, and stock and breeding behavior may be less predictable. Do not assume every store-bought ghost shrimp is the same. ShrimpGuide, June 14, 2026 |
| Crystal or bee shrimp (Caridina group) | Experienced keepers prepared to provide specialized soft, low-pH water | They are more demanding than Neocaridina, and requirements vary by species. Aqueon; ShrimpGuide, June 14, 2026 |
| Sulawesi shrimp | Specialist aquariums built for their warm, alkaline conditions | Their water conditions differ from those commonly used for dwarf shrimp; they are not a general beginner choice. ShrimpGuide, June 14, 2026 |
How to match shrimp to your water and tank
Test your water before choosing a species
Use measured, stable conditions to guide your choice rather than trying to force a shrimp to fit unsuitable water. Aquarium Co-Op recommends these ranges for Neocaridina: pH 6.5–8.5, GH at least 6°, KH at least 2°, and temperature 60–82°F; it describes 72–76°F as especially comfortable. These are that publisher’s care recommendations, not a guarantee for every water source or shrimp strain. Aquarium Co-Op’s cherry shrimp guide gives the range.

Treat these as Aqueon’s care targets, not universal guarantees of safety. Aqueon’s freshwater shrimp care guide also recommends a mature aquarium, where conditions and natural food sources are more established.

Distinguish physical fit from a stable colony setup
Aqueon lists red cherry, crystal and bee shrimp among choices suited to aquariums of 10 gallons or less. Aquarium Co-Op says Neocaridina can fit in very small aquariums, while preferring 10 gallons or larger for a breeding colony. A shrimp’s small size may allow it to live in a small tank, but it does not make a new or unstable nano aquarium easy to manage.
Protect shrimp with cover and gentle filtration
Use gentle filtration, or fit the intake with a sponge pre-filter so small shrimp are less likely to be drawn in. Plants and other cover provide hiding places, while plant surfaces and other grazing areas help shrimp forage. A sponge filter or intake pre-filter is a practical accessory supported by both Aqueon and Aquarium Co-Op.

Many fish prey on shrimp, especially young shrimp. Some small, non-aggressive fish may be possible tankmates, but no community aquarium should be treated as guaranteed safe for shrimp. If your priority is a breeding colony and shrimplet survival, a shrimp-only aquarium is the simplest, safest recommendation. Aqueon and Aquarium Co-Op discuss tankmate considerations in their care guides: Aqueon and Aquarium Co-Op.

Can you keep cherry shrimp and Amano shrimp together?
Their different breeding patterns do not by themselves rule out keeping them together, but the tank still needs to suit both kinds of shrimp and any fish present. Amano larvae need brackish or saltwater to develop, whereas cherry shrimp can establish a freshwater colony. If your goal is to raise cherry shrimplets, account for fish predation and provide cover; a shrimp-only tank gives young shrimp the safest odds.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you mix different shrimp colors or species?
Different Neocaridina color forms can interbreed. If preserving a particular color line matters, keep one color form rather than mixing them. Color grades are subjective, so choose for appearance instead of assuming a higher grade guarantees greater hardiness. Aqueon advises against mixing different species of the same genus when crossbreeding is a concern; check compatibility for the specific shrimp involved rather than treating all aquarium shrimp as one group.
