Short answer: A bearded dragon needs a dedicated UVB lamp; a screw-in heat bulb, even one advertised as full spectrum, does not provide UVB. For most indoor enclosures, a linear T5 high-output (HO) fluorescent system is the most practical starting point. The right lamp depends on tube strength, enclosure height, basking distance, mesh, reflector and measured UV Index (UVI), not the percentage printed on the tube alone.
What the best UVB bulb actually means
There is no universally best bearded-dragon UVB bulb that can be selected independently of the enclosure. UVB reaching the lizard is the result of the complete installation: lamp type, tube length, reflector, distance to the basking surface, screen or mesh between lamp and animal, and the height of the dragon’s back when it basks. Two identical tubes can deliver very different exposure in different vivariums.

The defensible product category for a typical indoor bearded-dragon habitat is a linear T5 HO fluorescent tube in a compatible reflector fixture. Current husbandry guidance specifically lists Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 linear lamps and Arcadia T5 HO Desert 12% and Dragon 14% kits as examples. These are starting options, not a ranking that proves one manufacturer is superior. Select the model that can be positioned correctly over your enclosure and verify the installed output whenever possible.

| Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 linear UVB (5.0 or 10.0 tubes) | Zoo Med lists these linear T5 products for bearded-dragon setups and directs keepers to its lighting guide for distance and UVI. | Tube length, HO fixture compatibility, enclosure height, basking distance, mesh transmission, reflector quality and the current Zoo Med UVI chart. |
| Arcadia T5 HO Desert 12% kit | A complete linear kit listed by ReptiFiles for desert species. | Approximate basking distance is 11 inches through mesh or 16–17 inches without mesh in that guide; actual UVI depends on the installed enclosure. |
| Arcadia T5 HO Dragon 14% kit | A higher-output linear kit listed by ReptiFiles for bearded dragons. | Approximate basking distance is 11–12 inches through mesh or 17–18 inches without mesh in that guide. The 14% label is not a universal upgrade. |
| Solarmeter 6.5 UVI meter | Optional instrument for checking the real UVI and gradient in your enclosure. | Meter cost and availability, correct measuring technique and willingness to recheck after changing lamp, mesh or décor. |
The Arcadia distances above are source-specific approximations based on roughly 45% mesh blocking. Mesh varies greatly by wire size, coating and aperture, so treat those numbers as a setup starting point rather than a guarantee. Zoo Med likewise recommends consulting its distance chart and checking exposure through the actual screen.

Why a dedicated UVB source is necessary
Bearded dragons use UVB to support vitamin-D production and calcium metabolism. A heat lamp can make a basking platform warm while delivering no useful UVB. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine specifically warns that bulbs with a screw-in base, including products sold as “full spectrum,” do not substitute for a reptile UVB lamp. Keep the heat source and UVB source coordinated, but regard them as separate functions.
Most glass and many plastics filter UVB. If the tube is mounted above a glass lid, the dragon may receive visible light and heat but little or no UVB. A screen can transmit some UVB while reducing it substantially; the amount blocked is not constant between enclosures. Place the lamp where the animal can bask under it and also move completely away from UVB.
How to choose tube strength and length
Start with enclosure dimensions
Measure the enclosure’s inside length, width and height, then measure from the lamp to the highest realistic basking surface. ReptiFiles suggests a linear tube about half the enclosure length, with examples of approximately 22 inches for a four-foot enclosure and 34 inches for a six-foot enclosure. The aim is a broad, usable UVB zone over the warm side, not a narrow beam that the dragon cannot leave.
A tube should generally sit on the same side as the heat lamps so the dragon can choose a combined warm, UV-rich basking area or retreat toward the cool side. It should not span the entire habitat in a way that prevents shade. Ensure that branches, ledges and hides cannot let the dragon climb unexpectedly close to the tube.

Understand what 5%, 10%, 12% and 14% mean
The printed percentage describes a lamp’s product category, not the UVI at the animal. A 10%, 12% or 14% tube can be appropriate only when its distance and reflector produce a suitable gradient. A lower-percentage tube mounted too far away can underexpose the dragon; a high-output tube mounted too close can overexpose it.
Zoo Med’s ReptiSun 5.0 and 10.0 T5 products therefore cannot be assigned a universal “correct” choice without your enclosure measurements. Compare the manufacturer’s current chart for the exact tube and fixture, then account for mesh and the basking platform’s height.
Prefer a reflector designed for the tube
T5 HO lamps are among the more powerful fluorescent UVB formats. A good aluminum reflector directs more of the lamp’s output downward; a bare tube or poorly matched fixture can produce a different exposure than the same tube in a quality reflector. Buy a complete kit or a fixture explicitly rated for the tube’s length and HO electrical requirements. Do not assume that a fixture designed for a different tube diameter will drive a T5 HO lamp correctly.
Published UVI targets do not agree
Use target numbers as attributed guidance, not as a single settled rule. Zoo Med’s current bearded-dragon species page places the animal in Ferguson Zone 4 and gives approximately 2.6–3.5+ UVI at the elevated basking site. ReptiFiles recommends 4.0–4.5 UVI in the basking area. Zoo Med’s general education material describes a broader 3.0–7.0 UVI basking range for its sunbeam method covering Zone 3 and Zone 4 animals.

Because these published figures differ, do not average them into a made-up target or claim that one has replaced the others. Follow the current instructions for the exact model, create a gradient, provide a complete UVB retreat and measure the installed setup when you can. A dragon should be able to regulate exposure by moving between the basking zone, intermediate areas and full shade.
Step-by-step installation
- Record the enclosure geometry. Write down inside length, width and height. Measure the distance from the intended tube position to the top of the basking animal, not merely to the floor.
- Choose tube coverage. Select a linear length that covers roughly half the enclosure length or the warm-side zone. Confirm that the fixture and tube are both T5 HO and that the reflector fits the enclosure.
- Decide whether the lamp is above or below mesh. Mounting inside the enclosure removes one blocking layer but requires a guarded fixture and protection from chewing, climbing and contact burns. Mounting above mesh is simpler; use the manufacturer’s through-screen guidance and recognize that your mesh may block more or less than the example.
- Position UVB with heat. Put the tube on the same side as the basking heat lamps. Align the strongest portion of the tube over the basking platform while leaving a cool, shaded route away from both heat and UVB.
- Set an initial distance. For the Arcadia Desert 12% kit, ReptiFiles gives about 11 inches through mesh and 16–17 inches without mesh. For the Dragon 14% kit, it gives about 11–12 inches through mesh and 17–18 inches without mesh. Those estimates assume roughly 45% mesh blocking; add 1–3 inches when a meter is unavailable, as that guide advises, and treat the result as provisional.
- Make the retreat complete. Zoo Med’s husbandry guidance says to provide a shelter where the reptile can retreat completely from all light and UVB exposure. Check that the hide’s roof, side walls or décor actually block the tube from the dragon’s view and that the animal can reach it without crossing an unsafe temperature zone.
- Measure the basking surface. If you have a Solarmeter 6.5, take readings at the dragon’s back height on the basking platform, then at intermediate points and inside the retreat. Record readings with the screen, reflector and décor installed exactly as used.
- Secure and label the setup. Fasten the fixture so it cannot fall, protect the tube from direct contact and mark the installation date. Recheck after changing the platform, screen, reflector, lamp or enclosure height.
Mesh, distance and reflectors: why the same bulb behaves differently
Mesh is not a fixed percentage
The often-quoted 45% reduction is an assumption used by ReptiFiles for its Arcadia distance examples, not a universal property of reptile mesh. Fine hardware cloth, dense screen, overlapping panels and dusty surfaces can reduce transmission differently. Measure through your actual lid whenever possible. If a meter is unavailable, maintain a conservative distance and a generous retreat rather than moving a high-output tube close to compensate for an unknown screen.
Distance changes output rapidly
Moving a tube a few inches can materially change UVI. Measure to the animal’s highest basking position, including the height of a branch or rock that may be added later. Recheck whenever the dragon’s furniture changes. A distance listed on a package is meaningful only for the lamp, reflector, mesh condition and orientation used to derive it.

Reflector shape matters
An aluminum reflector can substantially increase downward output compared with an unreflected tube. That is useful when it spreads light across the basking zone, but it also means a reflector-equipped fixture may produce more UVI at the same distance than a bare lamp. Match the setup to the chart for the complete kit, not to a tube-only assumption.

Measuring UVI with a Solarmeter 6.5
A Solarmeter 6.5 is an optional UVI meter that lets you verify exposure instead of relying only on labels. Hold the sensor at the dragon’s back height in the basking position, then take readings along the route the animal uses to retreat. Record the value, distance, screen condition and lamp age. The reading verifies exposure; it does not replace a safe gradient or a hide.
Use the meter after installation and after any change to lamp, reflector, mesh, platform or décor. A reading taken on the floor may not represent the dragon’s exposure if it spends time on an elevated ledge. Likewise, a single basking reading cannot describe the shaded end of the habitat.

UVB output declines before a fluorescent tube stops glowing. A lamp can look bright while producing less useful UVB, so visible light is not a replacement test. ReptiFiles lists replacement every 12 months for T5 fluorescent lamps and every six months for T8 lamps. Other veterinary guidance is broader: UC Davis gives three to six months for its fluorescent-bulb guidance, while Tree of Life Exotic Pet Medical Center gives six to 12 months depending on model. These differences make the exact product’s current instructions decisive.

Common setup failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| The dragon has heat but no measured UVB | Screw-in heat bulb, glass lid or plastic barrier. | Install a dedicated linear UVB system; remove glass or plastic from the UVB path and keep the heat lamp as a separate component. |
| UVI is lower than expected | Tube too far away, dense mesh, weak or mismatched reflector, aged lamp or incorrect fixture. | Check tube age and HO compatibility, clean the reflector, measure through the screen and adjust distance only within the model’s guidance. |
| UVI is higher than expected | High-output tube too close, reflector concentrating output, thin mesh or a raised basking ledge. | Increase distance, lower the platform or choose a model suited to the enclosure; preserve a complete shaded retreat. |
| The dragon cannot leave UVB | Tube spans the whole enclosure or hides do not block the lamp. | Limit coverage to the warm-side zone and add a genuinely dark retreat at the opposite end. |
| Output changes after redecorating | New branch, rock or platform altered basking distance. | Measure again at the new back height and update the care log. |
| The tube still glows after a year | Visible light persists while UVB may have declined. | Follow the exact replacement schedule and use a UVI meter if available; do not judge UVB by brightness. |
Are compact fluorescent UVB bulbs suitable?
Frances Baines’s August 2024 technical guide notes that T5 HO tubes are among the more powerful fluorescent UVB lamps. It also explains that compact fluorescent UVB lamps illuminate a smaller area with a steeper gradient, so they may not cover a typical bearded-dragon enclosure as evenly as a linear tube. That is a coverage limitation, not proof that every compact-bulb installation is impossible. If one is used, the keeper must verify distance, provide a retreat and ensure the dragon can access a suitable UVB zone rather than a tiny hotspot.
For a standard adult enclosure, a linear tube is usually easier to position across the warm side and easier to coordinate with a heat gradient. The choice still depends on enclosure dimensions and the complete fixture.
A practical buying checklist
- Confirm the product is a reptile UVB lamp, not only a heat or “full-spectrum” screw-in bulb.
- Choose a linear T5 HO tube or kit whose length suits the warm-side coverage and whose fixture is electrically compatible.
- Read the current model-specific distance and UVI chart before mounting it.
- Account for mesh, reflector, basking-platform height and the dragon’s actual back height.
- Place UVB on the basking side while preserving a fully shaded retreat.
- Use a Solarmeter 6.5 if practical, taking readings through the installed screen and at several positions.
- Record installation date and follow the exact lamp’s replacement instructions; do not wait for visible failure.
Bottom line for a 2026 setup
Start with a correctly sized linear T5 HO system such as a Zoo Med ReptiSun T5 linear lamp or an Arcadia T5 HO Desert 12% or Dragon 14% kit. Choose between models by enclosure height, mesh and achievable basking distance, not by the percentage on the packaging. Because published basking targets range from Zoo Med’s Ferguson Zone 4 value of 2.6–3.5+ UVI to ReptiFiles’ 4.0–4.5 recommendation, create a gradient, provide complete shade and verify your own installation whenever possible.
