That lets you notice their natural flock behaviour without teaching them to seek food from people. Use a field guide to identify what you see, or record sightings through a bird-count or citizen-science project.
Where to watch urban cockatoos
Choose an urban park or another naturalistic place where cockatoos already forage or roost. Queensland Government guidance recommends places such as beaches, national parks and urban parks for observing wildlife behaving naturally (Queensland Government: Feeding wildlife).
Settle somewhere you can observe routine activity without crowding, chasing or otherwise disturbing the birds. There is no universal viewing distance established in the guidance cited here; give the birds room to move away and do not pursue them.
What to look for
Sulphur-crested Cockatoos (Cacatua galerita) are gregarious birds that commonly forage in flocks and roost in trees. They occur around human settlements and eat berries, seeds, nuts and roots, according to BirdLife Australia’s species profile.

Watch how the flock moves between feeding and resting places, listen to its calls, and notice how birds interact. Some may forage on the ground while others perch nearby. Seeing cockatoos in a group near people is normal for this social species; their presence alone does not mean they need food from visitors.
Why you should not feed them
Hand-feeding or leaving out seed may bring cockatoos closer in the short term, but it can also encourage them to seek food from people. Tasmania’s wildlife guidance links feeding parrots such as cockatoos with food-seeking aggression, property damage, noise and mess, and notes that bringing birds together may raise disease-spread concerns (Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania: Keeping Wildlife Wild).

Surf Coast Shire likewise discourages hand-feeding and leaving out wild birdseed, citing dependence, pestering or aggression, disease concerns and the potential to attract rodents (Surf Coast Shire: Cockatoos). Queensland Government guidance explains more generally that regularly providing food can teach wildlife to return and wait, with possible noise, droppings, scattered food and impacts on neighbours. That is general wildlife guidance, not a cockatoo-specific experimental finding.
In practice, avoid offering food from your hand and do not leave seed or other food to draw birds to a particular spot. A cockatoo eating a handout is a description of behaviour, not a reason to provide one.

Identify and record sightings without attracting birds
If you are unsure which cockatoo you have seen, consult a field guide or a reliable online reference rather than relying on food to bring the bird close; Queensland Government guidance recommends those identification resources. To make an observation useful beyond your own visit, consider joining a bird count or citizen-science project. The City of Sydney points readers to those options in its cockatoo guidance.

Rules differ by jurisdiction. Surf Coast Shire says wildlife in Victoria, including cockatoos, is protected under the Wildlife Act 1975 and that harassment or harm without permission is illegal. Queensland Government advises checking with the relevant council because local rules and policies can differ. Check the wildlife authority or council guidance for the place you plan to visit rather than assuming one jurisdiction’s rules apply everywhere.
