Some bettas learn to anticipate feeding time, but that behavior is not a reason to offer extra food.
What should a betta’s aquarium provide?
Prioritize stable water, warmth, gentle water movement, hiding places, and an unobstructed route to the surface. Bettas can jump, so fit a secure lid while leaving room for the fish to reach the surface. PetMD’s veterinarian-authored, editorially reviewed care sheet recommends an aquarium of at least 2.5 gallons and describes 5–10 gallons as ideal; it also notes that larger aquariums can be easier to keep stable. Favor plants and decorations without sharp or pointy edges that could tear delicate fins. Aqueon names Anubias, hornwort, and Naja grass as live plant options and suggests betta-safe silk artificial plants when appropriate. Treat those examples as starting points, not a universal planting plan: suitability also depends on the aquarium and its lighting. Do bettas need a light, and how long should it stay on?
Use aquarium lighting to provide a consistent day-and-night rhythm, and switch it off at night. Aqueon’s care guide suggests six to eight hours of light, but this is its general recommendation, not a rule established for every aquarium. A timer can help keep the schedule consistent. Aqueon’s guide recommends the six-to-eight-hour period, while its aquarium lighting guidance discusses day/night cycles and timers.
Choose light according to the aquarium’s purpose. A fish-only tank does not need intense lighting; excess light can encourage algae. Live plants may need stronger light with a suitable photosynthetic spectrum, and requirements depend on the plants. Do not assume that a small light intended for general viewing will grow aquarium plants.

How often should you feed a betta?
Offer a suitable, varied diet in modest portions and remove leftovers. Aqueon describes wild bettas as eating insects and other invertebrates and recommends varying their diet. Its feeding guidance distinguishes between setups: it advises feeding sparingly once daily in an unfiltered container, or once or twice daily in a filtered aquarium. It also says food should be eaten within two minutes and uneaten food removed. These are Aqueon’s care instructions, not a universal veterinary consensus; follow guidance appropriate to your aquarium and fish. When choosing food, look for a diet formulated for bettas and consider whether the format suits surface feeding and lets you control portions. Aqueon describes its own betta food as floating pellets designed for bettas and surface feeding; that is the manufacturer’s product description, not an independent comparison. Why does a betta get excited when you approach?
Some bettas may learn to recognize their human companions and anticipate feeding time. Aqueon describes this behavior and suggests simple food-based interactions, while cautioning owners not to overfeed.
