Betta Fish Care: What to Know Before Bringing One Home

Betta fish can be beginner-friendly only with a prepared, cycled aquarium, warm stable water, gentle filtration, careful feeding and consistent maintenance. Here is what to arrange before bringing one home.

Betta fish can suit a first-time fish keeper, but only if you prepare and maintain a real aquarium. They are not bowl fish or maintenance-free pets: a betta needs warm, stable, conditioned water, biological filtration, regular testing and partial water changes, an appropriate diet, and daily observation.

Set up and cycle the aquarium before buying the fish. If you cannot provide the equipment, preparation time and ongoing routine described below, choose a pet whose care better fits your situation.

Is a betta fish a good first pet?

A betta may be a manageable first fish because one animal can live in a relatively small aquarium, but “beginner-friendly” describes the keeper’s preparation, not a betta’s ability to tolerate neglect. The important question is whether you can maintain stable conditions for the fish’s entire life, which PetMD gives as an average of 3–5 years with proper care (care sheet updated April 27, 2026).

Question to ask yourself What responsible care requires
Can I provide enough space? A properly equipped aquarium, preferably 5 gallons or larger, with a secure lid and room for swimming, hiding and surface access.
Can I control the environment? A heater, thermometer, gentle filter, water conditioner and test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.
Can I wait before adding the fish? Yes. You must cycle the aquarium and confirm stable water rather than rely on a fixed number of days.
Can I maintain it every week? Plan for daily checks, regular testing and a weekly partial water change with gravel cleaning.
Do I have a backup plan? You need a way to isolate the fish if a tank mate is aggressive, equipment fails or illness appears, plus access to a veterinarian experienced with fish.

If those commitments are realistic, a betta can be a rewarding choice. If you are looking for an animal that can live in an unfiltered bowl with occasional feeding, a betta is not suitable.

What size aquarium does a betta need?

Recommendations differ. Krista Keller, DVM, a board-certified specialist in zoological medicine at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, says: They should not live in bowls. Instead, they should ideally be in a 5-gallon glass or plastic tank or larger. The university explains that bowls can be too small for normal swimming and hiding behavior and recommends a low-flow filtration system. Read the full veterinary guidance at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine.

PetMD describes 2.5 gallons as a minimum and 5–10 gallons as ideal, noting that a larger volume generally makes temperature and water chemistry more stable. Because the sources use different thresholds, treat 5 gallons or more as the practical target rather than presenting one disputed minimum as a universal rule.

Source Published recommendation How to use it
University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine 5-gallon glass or plastic tank or larger; bowls are unsuitable. Use this as a conservative baseline.
PetMD 2.5 gallons minimum; 5–10 gallons ideal. Recognize that extra volume improves stability.

Choose a tank with a secure lid because bettas can jump. Leave enough space below the lid for the fish to reach the surface, where it takes atmospheric air. Provide smooth gravel, broad-leaved plants or other cover, and decorations without sharp edges that can tear long fins.

Equipment checklist before purchase

  • Aquarium of preferably 5 gallons or larger, with a secure lid and adequate surface clearance.
  • Adjustable heater and thermometer.
  • Filter sized for the aquarium, with adjustable or otherwise gentle flow.
  • Tap-water conditioner used according to its label.
  • Test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH.
  • Smooth, fin-safe decorations and plants or other hiding cover.
  • Species-appropriate betta pellets or granules.
  • Dedicated siphon and bucket for water changes.

How to prepare, cycle and test the aquarium

Fish waste becomes toxic as it breaks down. Biological filtration depends on beneficial bacteria that establish in the aquarium and process that waste. Add the fish only after the system has been set up, treated and tested; a calendar date alone cannot prove that it is ready.

The RSPCA recommends fishless cycling and says to add fish only after an aquarium has been set up and running for at least two weeks. PetMD describes cycling as commonly taking four to six weeks. RSPCA Queensland advises testing ammonia and nitrite every two to three days during the first six weeks, then every one to two weeks once the aquarium is established. These time frames are guidance, not guarantees: test results and stable conditions determine readiness.

Fishless-cycling procedure

  1. Set up the tank, substrate, plants, heater, thermometer and low-flow filter. Make sure the filter is running and the heater is maintaining the target temperature.
  2. Fill with tap water treated with aquarium conditioner. Follow the conditioner’s label for dosage and any waiting period.
  3. Start a fishless cycle using an appropriate ammonia source or cycling method. Do not put the betta in the tank while ammonia or nitrite is being established or remains unsafe.
  4. Test ammonia and nitrite every two to three days for the first six weeks, recording the results. Also test nitrate and pH so you can identify trends.
  5. Continue until tests show that the biological filter is processing the ammonia source and the water remains stable. If ammonia or nitrite is detectable at a harmful level, keep cycling and do not buy the fish yet.
  6. When the aquarium is ready, perform any needed partial water change, confirm temperature, and arrange the fish’s gradual acclimation.

Never use soap or detergent in the aquarium. If filter media is clogged, lightly rinse it in removed aquarium water, not tap water; tap-water disinfectants can kill beneficial bacteria.

Temperature, filtration and water quality

Bettas need warm, stable water. The University of Illinois and PetMD give 76–81°F; RSPCA Queensland recommends 24–26°C (about 75–79°F). These ranges overlap, so set a stable temperature within the shared range and verify it with a thermometer rather than trusting the heater dial.

Use a filter that provides biological filtration without blasting the fish. Keller specifically says, A filtration system that is low flow is preferred in their tank to keep the environment clean of toxins. If the current pushes the betta around, reduce the flow with the filter adjustment or a suitable baffle while preserving circulation.

Condition every batch of tap water as directed by the product label. During a water change, bring replacement water close to the aquarium’s temperature to avoid a sudden shock. Test whenever the fish behaves abnormally, after equipment failure, and on the regular schedule recommended for your established aquarium.

How to feed a betta without polluting the tank

Bettas are carnivorous. Feed a specialized betta pellet or granule, or another suitable high-protein food, in small portions that the fish can finish while you watch. The University of Illinois suggests food eaten within three to five minutes; RSPCA Queensland says under two minutes. Use those as observation guides rather than universal quotas: start with a small portion and adjust to the individual fish.

  • Offer a balanced pelleted or flaked food daily, following the food label and the fish’s body condition.
  • Use high-protein treats such as frozen or appropriately prepared brine shrimp, bloodworms, blackworms, tubifex or daphnia only occasionally.
  • Remove uneaten food promptly. Leftovers decay, raise the nutrient load and can worsen water quality.
  • Do not assume plant roots can feed a betta; they do not replace a carnivorous diet.
  • Avoid feeding extra portions because the fish appears eager. Overfeeding contributes to obesity and poor water quality.

Plants, cover and enrichment

Plants, smooth shelters and resting places let a betta explore, hide and pause. Keep an unobstructed route to the surface. Inspect every decoration for rough seams, holes or sharp edges that could catch delicate fins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use a mirror as routine enrichment. RSPCA Queensland warns that repeated flaring at a reflection can cause stress and exhaustion. Observe the fish instead: normal exploration, responsive behavior and periodic resting are more useful signs than a forced display.

Can bettas live with tank mates?

Never house two male bettas together. RSPCA Queensland also advises that males and females should be together only for controlled breeding. Community tanks are not a beginner setup because compatibility varies, fin-nipping and aggression can occur, and even a peaceful species adds waste and space requirements.

Some individual bettas may coexist with suitable peaceful species or larger snails, but that possibility is not a promise. A community aquarium needs more volume, stronger biological capacity, ample cover, close observation and a fully prepared backup tank. Remove a tank mate immediately if there is chasing, persistent hiding, torn fins or inability to feed safely.

Choosing, bringing home and acclimating the fish

Buy from a reputable retailer or rehoming source and ask where the fish came from. The RSPCA advises responsible acquisition and fishless cycling. Look for a fish that is responsive, moderately active and inquisitive, with intact fins, normal swimming, no obvious sores or spots, and a body that is not emaciated. Bright color and appetite are positive signs, but a temporary loss of color during transport is not by itself a diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the aquarium before the fish arrives. The CDC recommends gradual acclimation to temperature, health monitoring and consultation with a veterinarian experienced with fish. Follow the retailer’s safe acclimation instructions, avoiding a sudden temperature change, then release the fish without adding transport water to the aquarium when practical.

The maintenance routine after setup

Frequency Task What to look for
Daily Check temperature and equipment; observe swimming, breathing, appetite and appearance; feed a small portion. Heater and filter operating, fish responsive, no uneaten food or sudden behavior change.
Every 1–2 weeks once established Test water, including ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. During the first six weeks, test ammonia and nitrite every two to three days. Any unexpected ammonia or nitrite means investigate before adding food or livestock and consider a partial water change.
Weekly Change 10–25% of the water and siphon debris from the gravel, following RSPCA Queensland’s guidance. Replacement water conditioned and temperature-matched; fish remains in stable conditions.
When needed Lightly rinse clogged filter media in removed aquarium water. Preserve beneficial bacteria; never wash media under untreated tap water.

Do not replace all the water as a routine cleaning method. Large, abrupt changes can destabilize temperature and chemistry. Address a serious contamination or equipment failure with measured testing and appropriately sized partial changes.

Health signs and when to seek veterinary help

Healthy-betta indicators include normal swimming, responsiveness, moderate activity, curiosity, intact fins, bright coloration and a normal appetite. Persistent hiding, lethargy, unresponsiveness, abnormal swimming, skin discoloration or spots, swelling, fin damage or refusal to eat can indicate stress or illness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the thermometer and confirm that the heater and filter are operating.
  2. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH, and correct any water-quality problem cautiously.
  3. Inspect for sharp décor, bullying or other environmental causes.
  4. Contact a veterinarian experienced with fish if signs persist, worsen or include swelling, severe breathing difficulty, open sores or prolonged refusal to eat.

Water-quality checks are an important first response, not a substitute for diagnosis. A fish veterinarian can distinguish disease from husbandry-related stress and advise on treatment.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Putting a betta in a bowl or an uncycled aquarium because the fish is small.
  • Skipping the heater or assuming room temperature is stable enough.
  • Using a strong filter current that prevents normal swimming.
  • Adding untreated tap water or washing filter media with soap or chlorinated water.
  • Overfeeding, leaving food to decay, or feeding only plant matter.
  • Adding a male betta to another male’s tank or introducing community fish without isolation and a backup plan.
  • Using sharp décor or blocking access to the surface.
