Choose a food labeled complete and balanced for cats and for the relevant life stage, follow its feeding directions, compare calories, and ask a veterinarian about changes driven by illness, age, body condition, or a homemade-diet plan.
What “complete and balanced” means for a cat
On a cat-food label, complete means the product supplies all nutrients required for the intended diet. Balanced means those nutrients are present in the correct ratios. Both parts matter: a food can contain many desirable ingredients yet fail to provide the right nutrient amounts or proportions.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains the practical meaning of the claim this way: “If this statement includes the phrase ‘complete and balanced,’ then the product is intended to be fed as a pet’s sole diet and should be nutritionally balanced.” This is a U.S.-specific label framework. It describes nutritional intent; it is not a guarantee that every cat will thrive on the same food or that a veterinarian has endorsed a particular product.

Look for the adequacy statement on the package rather than relying on a front-panel phrase such as “natural,” “premium,” “holistic,” or “with real meat.” Treats, snacks, toppers, and supplements are generally not designed to be a cat’s sole diet. A product marked for intermittent or supplemental feeding should be used only in that role unless your veterinarian gives different instructions.

How to read a cat-food label in the right order
1. Find the nutritional adequacy statement
The statement is usually in the fine print near the guaranteed analysis or feeding directions. Confirm that it identifies the product as cat food and says it is complete and balanced, or clearly states the limited purpose for which it is intended. If there is no adequacy statement, you do not have the information needed to treat the product as a complete main diet.
2. Match the statement to the life stage
AAFCO label guidance recognizes four broad life-stage categories:
- Growth: for developing cats.
- Adult maintenance: for cats that have reached maturity.
- Gestation and lactation: for pregnancy and nursing.
- All life stages: formulated to meet the applicable requirements across those stages.
Nutrient amounts and ratios differ between stages, and cats have species-specific requirements. A food suitable for one stage should not automatically be assumed suitable for another. If a cat is pregnant, nursing, still growing, elderly, unusually thin, overweight, or affected by a diagnosed condition, ask a veterinarian whether the label’s life-stage claim fits the individual animal.

3. Check whether the product is a complete diet or a supplement
Some foods are deliberately concentrated toppers, treats, broths, or supplements. Their packaging may say “intermittent or supplemental feeding only.” That wording is a safety boundary, not a minor footnote. Feeding such a product as the main diet can leave nutrient requirements unmet even when the ingredient list looks appealing.
4. Read feeding directions and calorie information together
Feeding directions are a starting point, not an immutable prescription. Compare the recommended amount with the food’s calorie information and monitor the cat’s weight and body condition. AAFCO notes that feeding too much or too little means the animal is not receiving the intended balanced diet in practice. Two complete foods can require very different portions because their calorie densities differ.
Measure portions consistently. A pet-food scale can help with repeatable amounts, but it cannot determine how many calories an individual cat should receive. A veterinarian is the appropriate person to set or adjust a calorie target when body condition, illness, medication, or a major diet change is involved.

5. Understand how the adequacy claim was substantiated
A label’s claim may be based on meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile, on feeding tests conducted with AAFCO procedures, or on the route identified in the statement. Both routes provide useful information about nutritional adequacy, but neither should be described as a veterinary endorsement. Keep the method in perspective: it tells you how the manufacturer substantiated the claim, not whether the food is the best choice for every cat.

How to compare wet and dry cat food fairly
Guaranteed-analysis percentages are normally reported as fed, meaning they include the product’s water. Comparing the protein or another nutrient percentage directly between a wet food and a dry food can therefore be misleading. Convert both products to a dry-matter basis first.
The dry-matter calculation
- Subtract the moisture percentage from 100 to find the dry-matter percentage.
- Divide the nutrient percentage by the dry-matter percentage.
- Multiply by 100.
For the FDA’s worked example, a food containing 78% moisture has 22% dry matter. If its guaranteed analysis lists 12% protein, the dry-matter protein value is (12 ÷ 22) × 100 = 54.5%. That 54.5% figure is a conversion example, not a universal protein value for wet food.

After normalizing the numbers, compare the products’ adequacy statements, life-stage claims, calorie information, and feeding directions. The wet-versus-dry format alone does not establish which food is nutritionally superior. A cat’s medical needs, preferences, hydration strategy, and ability to maintain an appropriate body condition may all affect the practical choice.
Look beyond the ingredient list and front-of-pack claims
Ingredient lists describe ingredients, but they do not by themselves prove that a diet is complete, balanced, digestible, well controlled, or appropriate for a particular cat. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) Global Nutrition Committee recommends asking the manufacturer questions that reveal how the food is formulated and monitored.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Question to ask | Why it matters | What a useful answer includes |
|---|---|---|
| Who formulates the food? | Nutrient formulation requires relevant expertise, not just attractive recipes. | The qualifications and role of the person or team responsible for formulation. |
| What quality-control process is used? | Consistency depends on controls for ingredients, production, and finished products. | An explanation of testing and how batches are checked against specifications. |
| What research supports the food? | Evidence can clarify how the product was developed and evaluated. | Specific, relevant research rather than general statements about “science.” |
| How many calories does it provide? | Calorie density determines how much food a cat needs. | A calorie value expressed in a clearly identified unit, plus feeding guidance. |
| Can the company provide nutrient information? | Guaranteed analysis is limited and may not answer every comparison. | A way to obtain additional nutrient details and an explanation of the adequacy method. |
A company that cannot answer basic formulation, quality, calorie, or nutrient questions gives you less evidence with which to assess the food. Marketing language and a long list of recognizable ingredients should not substitute for that information.

Does your cat need a different food for its age or situation?
Start with the life-stage statement, then consider the individual cat. A growing cat, an adult at maintenance, and a cat that is pregnant or nursing do not have identical nutrient requirements. “All life stages” indicates that the food is formulated to meet the applicable profiles across those stages, but the correct portion still depends on the individual animal.
Age is only one factor. A change in body condition, appetite, stool quality, activity, or a veterinary diagnosis can alter the appropriate diet. The sources used for this guide establish how to read adequacy and life-stage information; they do not establish a universal diet for kidney disease, diabetes, allergies, urinary problems, or any other condition. For those decisions, use a veterinarian’s assessment rather than selecting a food solely from a general label claim.
A practical feeding plan after you choose a complete food
- Confirm the label. Verify cat-specific wording, a complete-and-balanced adequacy statement, and the relevant life stage.
- Record the calorie information. Note the product’s stated calorie density and the package’s starting feeding range.
- Measure a consistent portion. Use a measured scoop or scale so that changes are deliberate rather than accidental.
- Observe the cat, not just the bowl. Track weight and body condition over time, along with appetite and tolerance.
- Adjust with professional help when needed. If weight is changing unexpectedly, the cat has a medical problem, or the target amount is unclear, ask a veterinarian before making a large change.
Keep treats and supplements in their intended supporting role unless a veterinarian has incorporated them into a complete feeding plan. Adding several extras can change the overall calorie and nutrient balance even when the main food itself is appropriate.
Can a cat eat homemade food every day?
Not safely by default. AAFCO’s feline nutrient profiles contain 44 nutritional parameters, including minimums and, in some cases, maximums. Correct ratios and the cat’s life stage matter as well. Meeting those requirements requires more than combining meat, vegetables, or a general vitamin powder.
Do not build a daily recipe from an online ingredient list or add supplements routinely without professional formulation. A homemade-diet goal, a planned major diet change, or a cat with illness should be discussed with a veterinarian; a qualified veterinary nutritionist can formulate and evaluate an individualized recipe. If a professional recipe includes a specific supplement, use it exactly as directed rather than substituting products by guesswork.
What to do when a label or feeding plan raises a concern
| What you see | Practical response |
|---|---|
| No clear adequacy statement | Contact the manufacturer for clarification; do not assume the food is complete. |
| “Intermittent” or “supplemental” feeding only | Use it as a topper or treat within the stated limits, not as the sole diet. |
| Wet and dry percentages appear dramatically different | Convert both guaranteed analyses to dry matter before comparing nutrient percentages. |
| The cat gains or loses weight on the package amount | Recheck measured portions and calorie density, then ask a veterinarian about an adjustment. |
| A medical diagnosis or major appetite change is present | Get individualized veterinary advice instead of choosing from marketing claims. |
| The company will not explain formulation, quality control, research, or calories | Treat the missing information as a reason to keep evaluating other complete foods. |
A quick checklist for a better-balanced choice
- Is the product explicitly for cats?
- Does the adequacy statement say complete and balanced, or clearly limit the product to supplemental use?
- Does the life-stage claim match the cat?
- Was the claim substantiated through an AAFCO nutrient profile or feeding-test method, as stated on the label?
- Have you compared calories and feeding directions rather than percentages alone?
- If comparing wet and dry foods, did you convert nutrients to a dry-matter basis?
- Can the manufacturer explain formulation expertise, quality control, research, and nutrient information?
- Are treats, toppers, and supplements staying within a plan that preserves the main diet’s balance?
- Has a veterinarian reviewed the choice when illness, unusual body condition, a special life stage, or a homemade diet is involved?
This process gives you a defensible way to assess general diet quality without assuming that one brand, ingredient list, or format is universally best.
