Bottom line: BFF (Best Feline Friend) is Weruva’s wet-cat-food line, not one uniform recipe. Its cans and pouches span gravy, gelée and pâté textures, and the catalog separates complete-and-balanced foods from supplemental products. A 2017 incident involved select BFF products made exclusively for Australia and linked to thiamine-deficient batches. That historical event should not be presented as proof of a current U.S. recall or as a risk estimate for every BFF recipe. To decide whether a particular pouch or can suits your cat, check that item’s life-stage and feeding status, ingredients, calories, guaranteed analysis, package size and current availability.
What BFF cat food is
BFF, short for Best Feline Friend, is Weruva’s wet-food and treat line for cats. The manufacturer’s catalog includes cans, pouches and variety packs, with recipes described as gravy, gelée or pâté. Protein filters and product groupings make the range look like a single brand, but the nutritional details belong to individual recipes and formats.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The catalog places products under separate Complete & Balanced and Supplemental Feeding headings. That distinction matters: a food labeled for supplemental feeding is not automatically suitable as the sole diet, even if it contains named meat or looks nutritionally similar to a complete product. Read the exact package or product page rather than assuming every BFF item meets the same standard.
BFF’s moisture-rich format can be useful for cats that prefer wet food or need water supplied through meals. Texture, protein mix, calories and feeding directions differ by recipe, so a cat that accepts one BFF product may reject another. The practical question is not whether BFF as a whole is “good,” but whether the specific item matches your cat’s medical needs, life stage, preferences and daily calorie requirement.

What the catalog tells you before you buy
- Texture: choose among gravy, gelée and pâté styles where available.
- Format: products come in cans, pouches and variety packs; serving sizes are not interchangeable.
- Protein: recipes may use beef, chicken, tuna or other animal proteins. Check every ingredient if your cat must avoid a particular protein.
- Feeding status: confirm whether the item is complete and balanced or intended only for supplemental feeding.
- Life stage: verify the stated age category, such as adult, on the current label.
- Calories and analysis: use the recipe-specific calorie statement and guaranteed analysis for portions, not a brand-wide assumption.

A close look at Beef & Chicken Booya! Dinner in Gravy
The following example shows why BFF must be assessed recipe by recipe. Weruva lists Beef & Chicken Booya! Dinner in Gravy as an adult food in a 2.8-ounce pouch, sold on its product page as a 12-pack. Its numbers describe that pouch and recipe only.
| Label item | What the product page states |
|---|---|
| Form and package | Gravy in a 2.8-ounce pouch; product page lists a 12-pack |
| Life stage | Adult |
| First listed ingredients | Beef broth, beef, chicken and tuna |
| Other listed ingredients include | Potato starch, guar gum, taurine and vitamin/mineral supplements |
| Crude protein | 8% minimum |
| Crude fat | 2.2% minimum |
| Crude fiber | 1% maximum |
| Moisture | 87.5% maximum |
| Energy | 52 kcal per 2.8-ounce pouch |
The ingredient order means beef broth appears first by weight, followed by beef, chicken and tuna. A cat that needs a fish-free diet would not fit this particular recipe because tuna is listed, even though the name emphasizes beef and chicken. Potato starch and guar gum are also present; their inclusion is a recipe detail, not evidence that every BFF product uses the same carbohydrate or thickener.

Weruva’s directions for this example say to feed according to age, size and activity. If the pouch is fed alone, the stated guide is 1 ounce per pound of body weight per day. The company also says to provide clean water, refrigerate the food after opening and transition gradually over seven days. Those are manufacturer instructions, not individualized veterinary advice. A cat with diabetes, kidney disease, urinary problems, food allergies or unexplained weight change needs a veterinarian’s calorie and diet plan.
Is BFF complete and balanced?
Some BFF products are cataloged as complete and balanced, while others are listed for supplemental feeding. The phrase “wet cat food” does not answer which category a particular item belongs to. Look for the nutritional adequacy statement on the current package and confirm that it covers your cat’s life stage.
When a product is marked complete and balanced
A complete-and-balanced item is formulated to serve as the sole diet for the life stage named on its label, when fed according to its directions. It can still be a poor match for an individual cat’s allergies, medical condition, calorie needs or taste preferences. “Complete and balanced” is a nutritional adequacy claim, not a promise of universal suitability.

When a product is marked supplemental feeding
A supplemental product is intended to accompany another nutritionally complete food. Treat it as a topper, mixer or occasional component only as the label directs. Feeding a supplemental item as the entire diet can create nutrient gaps, especially when it displaces a complete food over weeks or months.

- Find the exact flavor, texture and package size you plan to feed.
- Read the nutritional adequacy or feeding-status statement on that item’s label.
- Confirm the life stage and whether the directions describe sole feeding or supplementation.
- Recheck the statement when changing recipes; a similar name does not guarantee identical formulation.
Has BFF cat food been recalled?
There was a documented 2017 incident involving select BFF products made exclusively for the Australian market. It should be described as an Australian-market historical event, not as an unqualified current recall of all BFF food or as evidence that current U.S. recipes are affected.
What happened in Australia
The Australian Senate Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport References Committee reported that the first associated illness appeared in April 2017. On May 5, 2017, the manufacturer announced that Australian retailers had voluntarily removed all BFF items from shelves while analysis was completed. The report says testing later found batches deficient in thiamine, an essential nutrient for cats.
The committee’s account recorded approximately 300 suspected cases by June 2017. That is a dated count from the Australian incident, not a current case count, a worldwide total or a probability that an individual cat will become ill. A 2026 Catster review reports 20 deaths; that figure is not stated in the cited Senate report excerpt, so it should remain attributed to that review and kept in the same historical Australian context.
The committee report attributes this statement to Weruva president David Forman during the May 2017 shelf removal: “We have recently been made aware of select Best Feline Friend (BFF) canned foods, exclusive to the Australian market, which may have been produced outside of intended formulation guidelines.”

What the incident does not establish
- It does not establish that every BFF recipe was involved.
- It does not establish that current U.S. products use the affected formulation.
- It does not provide a current risk estimate for cats eating BFF.
- It does not substitute for checking a product’s lot information, label and current regulatory notices.
How to check for a current safety notice
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that public-health advisories are distinct from recall press releases written by companies. Its advisories index is useful for checking notices listed by the agency, but the index alone cannot prove a complete worldwide recall history or prove that no company-issued U.S. recall ever occurred.

- Record the product details. Write down the brand, exact recipe, package type, lot code, best-by date and country or market shown on the container.
- Check the manufacturer’s current notice page. Match the complete product description and lot information rather than relying on a flavor name alone.
- Check the FDA advisories index. Search the product and manufacturer names, and read the notice’s dates, geography and affected lots.
- Compare the market. A notice for Australia, another country or a particular production run should not automatically be applied to an unrelated U.S. item.
- Stop feeding a suspect product if your cat is ill. Keep the package and lot code, contact a veterinarian promptly and report the issue through the appropriate regulatory or manufacturer channel.
Symptoms such as weakness, vomiting, loss of appetite, seizures or sudden neurologic changes require veterinary attention regardless of whether a public notice exists. Do not wait for an online recall list before seeking care.
Potential advantages of BFF
Many textures and serving formats
Gravy, gelée and pâté give owners options for cats with strong texture preferences. Pouches can be convenient for single-meal portions, while cans and variety packs may suit households that rotate flavors. The package size still determines calories and storage, so compare like with like.
High moisture by design
Wet food contributes water along with calories. That can help cats that drink little, although it does not replace a veterinarian’s treatment for urinary, kidney or other medical disease. Moisture percentages and energy density vary by recipe.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Named animal proteins
Many recipes identify animal proteins such as beef, chicken or tuna. Clear labeling helps owners screen for a known allergy or a protein their veterinarian has asked them to avoid. It does not make a recipe hypoallergenic, and multiple animal proteins can appear in one pouch.
Choice across feeding roles
The catalog’s separate complete-and-balanced and supplemental categories can support different feeding plans. Owners can select a sole diet where appropriate or use a supplemental item as a controlled topper, provided they follow the label and their veterinarian’s instructions.
Potential disadvantages and cautions
| Consideration | Why it matters | How to evaluate it |
|---|---|---|
| Recipe variation | Calories, ingredients, texture and feeding status can change from one BFF item to another. | Read the exact current label for every flavor and package format. |
| Seafood in some recipes | Fish may be unsuitable for a cat avoiding seafood or a household trying to limit protein sources. | Scan the full ingredient list; do not rely only on the recipe name. |
| Carbohydrate and thickener ingredients | Some recipes list ingredients such as potato starch or guar gum, which may matter to an individual diet plan. | Discuss medical restrictions with a veterinarian and compare the guaranteed analysis. |
| Supplemental products | A food not intended as a sole diet can displace essential nutrients if fed as the main meal. | Verify the nutritional adequacy statement before making it a staple. |
| Historical recall concern | The 2017 Australian incident is relevant background but does not identify all current products as affected. | Check current notices, market, lot code and date rather than making a brand-wide assumption. |
| Changing availability | Retail stock and prices are volatile. | Confirm the current seller, pack size and price immediately before ordering. |

How to choose a BFF recipe for your cat
1. Start with the medical and life-stage requirement
Ask whether your cat is a kitten, adult or senior and whether a veterinarian has prescribed a therapeutic diet. A general adult recipe should not be substituted for a medical formula without professional guidance. If your cat has a diagnosed allergy, list every protein that must be excluded before looking at flavors.
2. Decide whether you need a sole diet or a supplement
If BFF will supply all meals, select an item labeled complete and balanced for the appropriate life stage. If you want a topper, choose a supplemental product and keep the complete food as the nutritional foundation. Account for topper calories so total intake does not quietly rise.
3. Match the texture and format to your cat and routine
Try gravy, gelée or pâté according to preference, but introduce one change at a time. Pouches and cans may have different serving sizes and calorie densities even when the flavor name is similar. A variety pack is useful only if each included item fits your cat’s ingredient and feeding-status requirements.
4. Screen the ingredient panel
Read beyond the first ingredient. The Beef & Chicken Booya! example includes beef broth, beef, chicken and tuna, so a fish-sensitive cat would need another option. Check for all animal proteins, starches, gums, oils and supplements relevant to your cat’s plan.
5. Calculate portions from calories, not pouch count
Use the recipe’s stated kcal value and your veterinarian’s target body weight. In the example product, one 2.8-ounce pouch provides 52 kcal, but that figure cannot be transferred to another BFF flavor or package. Monitor body condition and adjust with professional advice if weight changes.

Feeding, storage and transition guidance
Portioning
For Beef & Chicken Booya! Dinner in Gravy, Weruva’s directions say that feeding the product alone calls for 1 ounce per pound of body weight daily, adjusted for age, size and activity. That is a manufacturer guide for that recipe. It is not a universal BFF rule and may not suit a cat with a different calorie requirement.
Transitioning
Weruva recommends a gradual seven-day transition. Mix increasing amounts of the new food with the old food while watching appetite, stool quality and signs of intolerance. If vomiting, persistent diarrhea or refusal to eat occurs, stop the transition and contact a veterinarian; cats should not be left without adequate food while an owner experiments with flavors.
After opening
Refrigerate opened food as directed and keep it covered. Serve portions that can be consumed promptly, discard food that has been left out or contaminated, and wash bowls regularly. Follow the package’s storage language if it differs between cans and pouches.
Water
The example product directions call for clean drinking water. Wet food supplies moisture, but cats still need access to fresh water at all times.
Price, pack size and availability in 2026
The example product page lists Beef & Chicken Booya! Dinner in Gravy in a 12-pack of 2.8-ounce pouches, but a stable current price is not established here. Retail prices, promotions, shipping charges and stock can change by seller and location. Compare cost per ounce and calories rather than comparing only the number of pouches in a box.
Availability can also differ between the United States, Australia and other markets. Because the historical safety incident was specific to products made for Australia, identify the market and formulation shown on the package you are buying. Recheck the listing and label at the time of purchase instead of relying on an old product description.

Their observations can help you identify questions to ask, such as whether a recipe is seafood-heavy or contains more carbohydrate ingredients than you prefer. They are not feeding trials, laboratory comparisons or veterinary approvals.

Practical decision checklist
- Is the exact product complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage?
- Does the ingredient list contain a protein or additive your cat must avoid?
- Does the texture and package size fit your cat’s preferences and your storage routine?
- What are the recipe-specific calories and guaranteed-analysis values?
- Can you verify the lot code, best-by date and market?
- Have you checked current manufacturer and regulatory notices?
- Will the feeding amount support your veterinarian’s calorie target?
- Can you buy the same recipe consistently, or do you need an acceptable backup?
BFF can be a reasonable wet-food option when the individual recipe meets those checks. The decisive evidence is on the current product label and in your cat’s response, not in the brand name alone.
