Short answer: Biewer Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers both have long, hair-like coats that demand consistent care when kept long. The Biewer is described by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as a low-shedding breed, while the Yorkie’s coat is described as similar to human hair. Those descriptions do not establish a controlled head-to-head shedding winner, and neither breed can be promised as allergy-proof. Choose between them based on the grooming routine you can reliably maintain and on your own reaction to the individual dog.

How the two coats are built
Biewer Terrier: straight, silky hair without an undercoat
The UKC’s 2015 Biewer Terrier standard specifies a straight coat without an undercoat and describes its texture as soft and silky. “Without an undercoat” describes the coat’s structure; it does not mean the dog cannot lose hair or that grooming is optional. Long, fine strands can tangle against one another, collect debris and form mats if they are not separated regularly.

For owners, the practical consequence is a coat that benefits from gentle, deliberate handling rather than infrequent, vigorous brushing. Keeping the hair long also means more surface area to protect from friction around the collar, harness, legs and behind the ears.

Yorkshire Terrier: a coat compared with human hair
The AKC describes the Yorkshire Terrier’s coat as similar to human hair. That comparison helps explain why a Yorkie’s coat is usually managed as continuously growing, fine hair rather than as a dense, seasonal fur coat. It is still a dog coat: it can become dirty, oily, tangled or matted, and the skin beneath it still needs routine checks.

The similarity in texture does not make a Yorkie maintenance-free. A long show-style coat requires separation and combing from the skin outward, while a shorter pet trim reduces the amount of hair that can tangle but does not eliminate brushing, bathing or inspection.
Do Biewer Terriers shed?
Yes, Biewer Terriers can shed hair. The AKC describes shedding as low, which is useful for setting expectations but is not a laboratory measurement, a promise that an individual dog will leave no hair, or a comparison proving that every Biewer sheds less than every Yorkie.
Loose hairs may remain caught in a long coat until brushing removes them. That can make visible hair around the home seem limited while increasing the importance of brushing: hair that is not released can contribute to tangles. Shedding also varies between individuals and can be affected by coat length, skin condition, season, age and general health; the cited breed profile does not quantify those effects.

If you are considering a Biewer because you want less hair on furniture, treat “low shedding” as a tendency, not a guarantee. Spend time with the particular dog in an indoor setting and ask the breeder, rescue or veterinarian about its current skin and coat condition.
Do Yorkshire Terriers shed?
Yorkies also lose hair, even though their fine coat is often described as hair-like. The AKC profile does not provide a shedding percentage, a hairs-per-day count or a controlled comparison with Biewers. Calling the coat similar to human hair explains its feel and growth pattern; it should not be interpreted as “no shedding.”
In a long coat, released strands can stay interwoven until a brush or comb removes them. A short trim may make loose hairs easier to notice on bedding or clothing, but it does not change the need to care for the skin and coat. If minimizing visible hair is your main goal, compare individual dogs in person rather than relying on a breed label.

Which breed is easier to groom?
Neither breed has a clear evidence-based grooming advantage when both are kept long. AKC recommends daily brushing for a long-coated Biewer and for a long-coated Yorkie. An AKC feature on the Biewer adds that a full, long silky coat calls for daily or every-other-day grooming. The decisive variables are coat length, how readily the dog mats, the dog’s tolerance for handling and whether you can keep the routine consistent.

| Your situation | Likely practical choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want floor-length or otherwise very long hair | Neither is “easy”; plan for a daily routine. | Long strands tangle and trap debris regardless of breed. |
| You prefer a short pet trim | Either can be simpler than a full coat. | Less length generally means fewer tangles to work through, although regular brushing and skin checks remain necessary. |
| You dislike frequent hands-on care | Reconsider both breeds or choose a consistently short trim with professional help. | The cited guidance calls for frequent brushing on long coats. |
| Your dog resists brushing | The more cooperative individual may be easier, regardless of breed. | Temperament and early handling determine whether the required routine is realistic. |
A workable long-coat grooming routine
The following routine translates the breed guidance into a repeatable home process. It is designed for a healthy coat; painful mats, inflamed skin, parasites or sudden hair loss warrant veterinary advice rather than more forceful brushing.
- Choose a calm surface and short sessions. Put the dog on a secure, non-slip surface. Reward stillness and handle one small area at a time, especially if the dog is new to grooming.
- Separate the coat in sections. Work from the skin outward instead of brushing only the visible top layer. Divide the body into manageable areas: chest, shoulders, sides, belly, legs, tail and the hair around the ears.
- Use a brush or comb intended for long, silky coats. The AKC breed profiles identify a grooming brush or comb as a relevant category, but they do not endorse a particular model. Select tools that let you reach the base of the hair without scraping the skin.
- Start at the ends of a tangle. If you meet resistance, stop and loosen the outermost strands with your fingers or a comb. Pulling hard can hurt the dog and teach it to fear grooming.
- Check friction points every session. Pay special attention behind the ears, under the collar or harness, in the armpits, around the groin and between the toes. These areas mat quickly because hair rubs together or collects moisture.
- Finish with a gentle skin and coat inspection. Look for redness, scabs, odor, parasites, sore spots or a sudden change in hair texture. Record anything unusual and ask a veterinarian if it persists.
- Keep the schedule you can sustain. A long Biewer coat may need daily or every-other-day attention according to AKC guidance; AKC specifically recommends daily brushing for a long-coated Yorkie. If you repeatedly skip sessions, discuss a shorter trim with a qualified groomer.
Long coat versus a shorter pet trim
Keeping the coat long
A long coat showcases the silky texture described for both breeds, but it creates the largest daily workload. Hair can drag through food and water, pick up outdoor material and knot where it contacts equipment or the dog’s body. Owners must be prepared to inspect the coat frequently and to arrange professional grooming when the home routine is not enough.

Choosing a shorter trim
A shorter trim is a management decision, not a claim that the dog becomes maintenance-free or sheds less. Less length can make brushing faster and mats easier to spot, but the dog still needs regular brushing, bathing appropriate to its needs and checks for skin problems. Have a groomer explain the upkeep interval for the specific trim you select.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Allergies: what “hypoallergenic” does and does not mean
Allergy symptoms are commonly triggered by proteins associated with a dog’s dander, saliva and other materials, not simply by the amount of hair visible on the floor. Hair can carry those materials through the home, so a low-shedding or hair-like coat does not guarantee an uneventful response.
The AKC’s allergy guidance states, “there is no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic breed.” The Yorkie profile uses the term “hypoallergenic,” and the Biewer profile describes low shedding, but neither statement establishes that one breed is safer for every allergic person. The available breed pages do not report a controlled Biewer-versus-Yorkshire allergy trial.

Before bringing a dog home
- Spend repeated, indoor time with adult dogs of the breed and, if possible, with the exact dog you may adopt. A brief outdoor meeting is a weak test because ventilation and exposure time differ.
- Notice symptoms during the visit and later that day. Do not treat the absence of an immediate reaction as a medical guarantee.
- Discuss your plan with an allergist, particularly if you have asthma or a history of severe reactions. A clinician can advise on testing and risk reduction.
- Ask who will handle brushing, bathing and laundry. Grooming can release dander and loose hair, so the person with allergies may not be the best person to perform it.
Reducing exposure after adoption
- Keep the coat clean and free of mats through the schedule appropriate for its length.
- Wash bedding and soft furnishings regularly and vacuum the areas where the dog rests.
- Use a designated grooming area that can be cleaned easily, and wash hands after handling the coat.
- Keep the dog out of the allergic person’s bedroom if that is part of the household’s medical plan.
- Reassess symptoms with a healthcare professional rather than changing medication or relying on breed marketing.
What the shedding evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The strongest comparison available is qualitative: AKC labels Biewer shedding low, while its Yorkie profile emphasizes a human-hair-like coat. Those statements support the expectation that both may leave less obvious loose hair than a heavily shedding, undercoated breed, but they do not rank the two breeds under identical conditions.
There are no established shedding percentages, allergy-risk numbers, grooming-cost averages or controlled head-to-head tests in the cited material. Do not use a numerical “shedding score” from an unrelated website as if it were a measurement of your future dog. Coat care, individual variation and household cleaning practices can matter more than a small difference in breed descriptions.
How to choose between a Biewer and a Yorkie
Choose based on your grooming capacity
If you can brush carefully every day, inspect friction points and budget for professional grooming when needed, either breed may fit a long-coat household. If your schedule is unpredictable, the better choice may be the individual dog whose coat is already kept short and whose handling skills are established—not a presumed “easier-shedding” breed.

Meet the dog, examine the skin and coat, and watch how it responds to a comb touching sensitive areas. A cooperative dog with a healthy, untangled coat can be easier to maintain than a dog of the same breed that panics, mats quickly or has untreated skin disease.
Choose based on allergy testing, not labels
If allergies drive the decision, arrange controlled visits and medical advice before adoption. A Biewer’s low-shedding description and a Yorkie’s “hypoallergenic” label are starting points for questions, not guarantees. Plan for the possibility that you may react to one individual and not another.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Assuming low shedding means no grooming: Replace that assumption with a brushing schedule suited to coat length.
- Calling either breed non-shedding: Use “low shedding” for the AKC Biewer characterization and avoid assigning an unsupported numerical ranking to Yorkies.
- Treating hypoallergenic as allergy-proof: Remember the AKC’s explicit 100% qualification and test your response to the individual dog.
- Brushing only the top layer: Separate the hair and check the skin so hidden mats do not grow beneath a smooth surface.
- Waiting until a mat is large: Address small tangles gently; painful de-matting may require a professional clip and can damage trust.
- Buying a tool by breed name alone: Start with a suitable brush or comb category, then choose a tool that reaches the coat comfortably without scratching the skin. No particular product model is endorsed by the cited sources.
- Using a breed-wide promise to make a medical decision: Involve an allergist or veterinarian when symptoms, asthma or severe reactions are concerns.
Bottom line for prospective owners
Biewer Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers are broadly similar grooming commitments when their coats are long: both need frequent, careful brushing, and both can develop tangles if maintenance slips. The Biewer has an AKC description of low shedding; the Yorkie has an AKC description comparing its coat with human hair. Neither description proves a universal shedding winner, and neither breed is guaranteed hypoallergenic. Select the dog and coat length that match your time, handling skills and medical advice, then judge the individual dog rather than relying on a label.
