For a remote view, open Parks Canada’s Polar bear webcam – Wapusk National Park page and follow its “Cape Churchill cam” link to explore.org. The joint Parks Canada–Polar Bears International camera is most likely to show relevant activity in October and November, when bears gather near Cape Churchill waiting for Hudson Bay sea ice. To see bears in person, book a guided Churchill-area tour rather than exploring alone.

Watch the Cape Churchill polar-bear webcam

Use the official route

  1. Open Parks Canada’s page titled Polar bear webcam – Wapusk National Park.
  2. Select the page’s “Cape Churchill cam” link, which opens the live viewing feed on explore.org.
  3. Check back during October and November, the core northern Manitoba polar-bear season.

The camera is in Wapusk National Park and is presented jointly by Parks Canada and Polar Bears International. It is a wildlife window, not a scheduled show: the image may be quiet, weather-obscured or temporarily unavailable, and a working feed never guarantees a sighting.

Wapusk covers 11,475 square kilometres, according to Parks Canada’s page (modified 2023), and protects one of the world’s largest polar-bear maternity-denning areas. Parks Canada describes October and November as “Polar Bear Season” in northern Manitoba, when viewers can check what is happening in real time.

Why October and November are the best months

Western Hudson Bay polar bears spend roughly mid-November to mid-July on the sea ice. As the ice melts, bears come ashore in mid-to-late July and remain on coastal land until freeze-up. From mid-July to mid-November, the greatest concentrations are between the Nelson River and Churchill.

#1 Best Overall

By October and November, bears are waiting for the bay to freeze. That seasonal concentration gives the Cape Churchill camera its best chance of showing activity. Parks Canada says bears generally return to the ice in late November to early December, so conditions and sightings can change quickly toward the end of the season.

Summer and early fall can still bring bears to the Churchill area, but the most dependable viewing window for the webcam and organized trips is the pre-freeze-up period.

Choose a guided format

Listed vehicle operators include Frontiers North Adventure’s Tundra Buggy, Great White Bear Tours, and Lazy Bear Lodge and Expeditions. Dates, availability, transportation, accommodation, meals and inclusions vary, so confirm those details directly with the operator before paying. Current tour prices, flight and rail schedules and live-feed uptime are not fixed by the information available here.

Compare trips by what you actually need

Decision What to check
Access format Single-day vehicle outing, multi-day package or lodge-based stay
Safety model Guide or bear monitor, vehicle design, communications and emergency procedures
Timing October–November peak season versus summer and early-fall shoulder opportunities
Logistics Transport into Churchill, lodging, meals, weather contingencies and time in the field
Conservation practice Licensed operation, no baiting and compliance with restricted high-use areas

Vehicle-based tours keep visitors inside purpose-built equipment while guides monitor conditions and animal behavior. Lodge and multi-day programs may provide more time in the field but require greater planning and weather flexibility. No format can promise a sighting.

Safety is part of every Churchill itinerary

Parks Canada warns that “a polar bear may be encountered anywhere at any time of the year” in Churchill. Risk rises from July through freeze-up and is highest in October and November, when more bears are on land near the community.

If you see a bear near town

Manitoba’s Polar Bear Alert Program operates a 24-hour reporting line for bears in the Churchill area: 675-2327 (675-BEAR). Reporting helps protect people and property, reduce harassment or the need to kill bears, prevent animals from becoming conditioned to scavenging and protect response staff. Keep your distance and do not approach, feed, attract or attempt to photograph a bear at close range.

The Great Polar Bear Adventure
  • THE GREAT POLAR BEAR ADVENTURE takes audiences to a whole new world by combining wildlife footage of polar bears in the Arctic with cutting edge animation normally the domain of big budget studio features. The story begins with Ikuk who becomes pregnant for the first time. She gives birth to two beautiful cubs, Cassie and Asak, but is nervous about how to teach the cubs survival skills. The family befriends a skitter arctic fox, Pupa (voiced by Howie Mandel), who scavenges after their food and warns of threats from the dangerous, old polar bear, Krakush. With the rise of global warming, Ikuk discovers her traditional hunting grounds have melted and is forced to take her family to dangerous two-leg territory to scavenge for food. There she is separated from her cubs, who must ward off unexpected danger before reuniting with their mom. At the end of their story, we learn that the narrator is Cassie, grown from a young cub into a mother herself, and she recounts this story from her youth to the next generation of bears.

How large are Churchill’s polar bears?

The Town of Churchill records that adult males can exceed 600 kilograms (1,320 pounds) and stand about 3.05 metres (10 feet). Those figures describe the species’ potential size; they are not a prediction of the animals you will see on a particular camera feed or tour.

Plan a responsible viewing trip

  • Target October or November if your priority is concentrated coastal viewing.
  • Book a recognized local operator and ask exactly what guide coverage, bear monitoring and emergency procedures are included.
  • Confirm transport, accommodation, meals, cancellation terms and weather contingencies.
  • Choose operators that follow restricted-area rules, use existing trails where required and never bait bears.
  • Allow for quiet webcam periods and missed sightings; wildlife viewing is inherently variable.

Whether you watch from home or travel to Manitoba, the Cape Churchill camera offers the simplest access, while a guided Churchill expedition adds local expertise and managed field access. The same seasonal reality governs both: the strongest viewing opportunity comes before Hudson Bay freezes, when bears gather along the coast.
