Care for a big dog starts with three priorities: choose food suited to the dog’s life stage and, for puppies, large-breed growth; keep the dog lean; and tailor exercise and preventive care to its age, health, and build. What counts as a big dog?
Size labels vary. VCA Animal Hospitals uses an expected adult weight of 70 pounds or more to describe large and giant breeds in its nutrition guidance, last updated April 17, 2026. A dog’s breed, build, age, and health still matter more to an individual care plan than a single weight cutoff.

How should you feed a large-breed puppy?
Choose a complete diet formulated for large-breed growth, and ask your veterinarian to help select the food and set portions. Large-breed puppies are vulnerable to developmental orthopedic problems; feeding too much can contribute to excessive growth and related problems even when the food itself is appropriate. Growth formulas account for factors such as growth rate and calcium content.

Check the food label’s nutritional adequacy statement to confirm that it is intended for growth and specifically appropriate for large-breed puppies. The AKC large-breed care guidance recommends food that has passed AAFCO feeding trials for growth and is marketed for large- or giant-breed growth. Have your veterinarian consider your puppy’s age, body condition, and feeding directions when deciding how much to serve and when to transition to adult food.
Keep portions and body condition in view
Feeding directions are a starting point, not a substitute for monitoring the individual dog. Ask your veterinarian to assess body condition and adjust portions as the puppy grows. In adults, staying lean reduces unnecessary stress on joints. Large dogs need more total energy than smaller dogs, but fewer calories per unit of body weight, according to VCA’s nutrition guidance.

Choose a feeding routine without assuming it prevents bloat
VCA lists smaller, more frequent meals, slowing fast eating with a puzzle feeder or slow-down bowl, and avoiding intense exercise around meals among possible feeding practices. These measures do not guarantee protection from GDV. Guidance about bowl height is not settled: VCA discusses ground-level feeding, while the AKC bloat overview says evidence about raised versus floor-level bowls conflicts and does not support a firm recommendation. Ask your veterinarian what is appropriate for your dog.
How much exercise does a large dog need?
There is no single exercise-duration formula that fits every large dog. Age, breed, health, body condition, and activity level shape what is suitable. For adult dogs, regular appropriate activity supports weight management; ask your veterinarian how to adapt activity if your dog has pain, mobility changes, or a suspected orthopedic problem.

Protect a growing puppy’s joints
Large puppies need activity and socialization, but repeated running and jumping—especially on hard surfaces—may be inappropriate while bones are still developing. Favor self-regulated play and check with your veterinarian before strenuous running, jumping, or organized sports.
The AKC article says growth plates in large and giant breeds may fuse as late as 16 to 18 months, though timing varies by dog. That range is not a universal deadline for starting high-impact activity; your veterinarian can advise based on your puppy’s development.

How can you recognize bloat and GDV?
Gastric dilatation-volvulus occurs when a gas-filled stomach twists, blocking its entrance and exit. It is life-threatening, and a twisted stomach requires urgent surgery, according to VCA’s GDV guidance. Large, deep-chested dogs are of particular concern, but any dog can be affected; the exact cause is unknown.

If you suspect bloat or GDV, go to a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately. Do not wait to see whether signs resolve or rely on feeding routines or equipment to rule out an emergency.

Ask about risk and gastropexy
Gastropexy is a surgical procedure that attaches the stomach to help prevent it from twisting in most cases. It does not prevent the stomach from dilating. A veterinarian may discuss it for some dogs at higher risk, including in connection with a planned spay or neuter. It is a risk-management option, not a guarantee against bloat.
What belongs in a big dog’s preventive-care plan?
Arrange routine veterinary visits and bring up meaningful changes in appetite, activity, behavior, or mobility. Preventive care is also the time to revisit food portions, body condition, exercise, and any breed- or health-related concerns. Because large dogs can have substantial practical costs, include food, a suitably sized bed, medication, and transport in ownership planning; seek current policy documents and compare coverage, exclusions, deductibles, reimbursement, and eligibility if considering pet insurance.
