Teach your puppy that its name is an attention cue: say it once, mark the moment it turns toward you, and reward immediately. Start in a quiet, enclosed place, then gradually add distance and distractions. A response to the name means “pay attention”—coming back to you is a separate skill that needs its own training.
Teach the name response in 10 steps
-
Choose a distinct name
If you are still choosing, avoid names that sound like common cues or household members’ names. For example, “Kit” can sound like “sit,” while “Moe” or “Joe” can sound like “no.” The American Kennel Club’s naming guidance gives more examples.

Get a reward ready
Use a small, soft treat your puppy likes and can chew and swallow quickly. A more appealing food may help if the puppy is struggling to focus, but treats are a useful aid, not a requirement.

Wait until your puppy looks away
Begin when your puppy is not already watching you. That way, the exercise teaches the puppy to turn in response to the name rather than rewarding a look that happened beforehand.
-
Say the name once
Use a clear, cheerful voice. Avoid repeating or shouting the name if your puppy does not respond; make the exercise easier instead.

Mark the turn
The instant your puppy turns toward you, mark the response with a clicker or a consistent word such as “yes” or “good.” A clicker is optional; a verbal marker works if you use it consistently.

Practice in brief opportunities
Repeat when your puppy is attentive and still enjoying the game. If the puppy gets distracted or frustrated, pause or simplify rather than pushing through. There is no universal number of repetitions or days in which every puppy will learn the response. As general puppy-training guidance—not a name-game requirement—the AKC advises keeping initial sessions to no more than 10 minutes and ending positively.
-
Increase difficulty gradually
Once your puppy responds reliably in the easy setup, build toward a more complete turn or eye contact, then add distance and distractions. Try new rooms, people, toys, and eventually outdoor settings one change at a time.

Keep the name positive and train recall separately
Use the name to invite attention, not to precede angry corrections or punishment. To teach your puppy to return to you, train a separate “come” cue with recall games. Practice near hazards only with suitable restraint, such as a leash or long line.

Choose a marker and reward that suit your puppy
A clicker gives you a distinct sound to mark the turn; a consistent verbal marker such as “yes” or “good” avoids carrying an extra tool. Either can work—the key is to mark the response promptly and consistently. For food, prioritize what your puppy will eat readily and swallow quickly; if an ordinary treat is not holding the puppy’s attention, try a more valued option.
Best Value
- High Value, Irresistible Flavor: Pups love the taste and aroma, making training sessions more effective and enjoyable
- High-Quality Ingredients: Made in the USA with clean, simple ingredients, starting with chicken - nothing artificial and no fillers
- Low-Calorie: Less than 2 kcal per treat and high in protein, perfect for frequent rewarding without worry
- Perfectly Sized: Small enough for one-bite rewards, which helps prevent overfeeding while keeping training sessions flowing smoothly
- Soft & Chewy: Perfect texture for quick rewarding during training, and great for pups with sensitive teeth like senior dogs
What to do if your puppy ignores the name
- Make the setup easier: Move closer, reduce the distraction, or return to a quieter area. Try a reward your puppy values. Say the name once rather than repeating or shouting it.
- Count a turn as success: If your puppy looks toward you but does not walk over, the name response has worked. Coming to you is recall, a different behavior to teach separately.
- Rebuild a positive association: If the puppy mostly hears its name around corrections, practice cheerful name-to-reward repetitions so the sound predicts pleasant attention.
Keep recall practice safe
A puppy responding to its name is not proof that it will come back when called. Build recall progressively and use a leash or long line wherever a missed response could put the dog in danger. VCA notes that recall is never perfect and advises keeping a dog on leash when a large animal or vehicle might cross its path.
