Biggest Bugs in Texas: 9 Enormous Arthropods Explained

Texas’s famous list of nine enormous “insects” actually contains seven insects, one centipede and one vinegaroon. Here is what each is, how size should be measured, and what the official seven-inch walkingstick record means.

Texas does have remarkably large insects and other arthropods, but there is no scientifically consistent “biggest” ranking behind the familiar list of nine. Body length, wingspan, mass and overall silhouette produce different winners. The strongest documented size claim is the giant walkingstick, Megaphasma denticrus: Texas A&M Forest Service says it can reach seven inches and calls it the longest insect found in the United States. That is a reported maximum, not the usual size of every specimen.

The list also needs a taxonomy correction. The Texas red-headed centipede is a myriapod, and the vinegaroon is an arachnid. All nine are arthropods, but only seven are insects in the strict biological sense.

Why “biggest” is not one measurement

The nine animals named in the July 17, 2025 list are conspicuous for different reasons. A walkingstick is judged mainly by body length; a butterfly or crane fly can look much larger when its wings or legs are spread; a cockroach or water bug may appear substantial because of its broad, heavy-looking body. Treating those impressions as a single scientific scale creates a misleading ranking.

Use the measurement that matches the animal:

  • Body length: the most useful comparison for elongated insects such as walkingsticks and centipedes.
  • Wingspan: the relevant dimension for butterflies, crane flies and dobsonflies when they are fully spread.
  • Mass or bulk: useful for broad-bodied water bugs and cockroaches, although a consistent mass comparison is not established for this list.
  • Overall silhouette: explains why a many-legged centipede or long-legged crane fly can look enormous without having the longest body.

Accordingly, the table below identifies what each animal is and which size impression drives its inclusion; it is not a ranked chart.

Giant water bug

Lethocerus americanus is the list’s aquatic true bug. Its broad, flattened profile creates a stronger impression of size than a narrow-bodied insect of the same length. “Giant water bug” is a useful field name, but a photograph alone is not enough to establish an exact measurement. Record the body length separately from any legs or appendages when documenting one.

Giant walkingstick

The giant walkingstick, Megaphasma denticrus, is the clearest size standout in the available official material. Texas A&M Forest Service says it can reach seven inches and describes it as the longest insect found in the United States. The wording indicates an upper limit: most individuals will not necessarily approach seven inches. Its extremely elongated, sticklike body also makes it look larger than a compact insect with a similar mass.

Texas red-headed centipede

Scolopendra heros belongs to the myriapods, not the insect class. Its long body and many pairs of legs explain why it appears so imposing. A centipede is not built like an insect: it does not have the three-pair-of-legs body plan used to define insects. Treat an unidentified centipede as an animal to observe rather than handle, because a defensive bite is possible if it is restrained or stepped on.

Vinegaroon

Mastigoproctus giganteus is an arachnid, commonly grouped with whip scorpions, rather than an insect. The animal’s long tail-like sensory appendage contributes to its unusual silhouette. A vinegaroon can use a defensive spray when disturbed, so keep faces, eyes and pets away and do not provoke it. Its inclusion demonstrates why “large arthropods” is more accurate than “nine insects.”

Cicada killer

Sphecius speciosus is a large wasp whose common name links it to cicadas. It is an insect, but the label “killer” should not be treated as a general danger warning for people or pets. Identification should rely on the full body pattern and behavior observed from a safe distance, not on size alone. An exact maximum for Texas specimens is not established in the cited material.

Giant swallowtail butterfly

Papilio cresphontes is best compared by wingspan, not by the length of its body. A butterfly with wings fully open can occupy much more space than one perched with wings closed, making photographs and casual sightings difficult to compare. Use a ruler in the same plane as the insect only when it can be done without touching or disturbing it; otherwise record a visual estimate and avoid presenting it as a verified measurement.

Crane fly

Crane flies are members of the family Tipulidae. Their very long legs make them look much larger than their delicate bodies, so “leg span” and “body length” can produce radically different impressions. They should not be grouped with mosquitoes merely because both are flies with slender bodies. The family-level name in the list is also a reminder that several species may be encountered under the same common name.

Dobsonfly

Corydalus cornutus is another conspicuous winged insect on the list. Its apparent size can be described by body length, wingspan or the silhouette created when it is resting. Because the cited material does not establish a single Texas maximum, avoid repeating an exact number as though it were a statewide record. A clear photograph showing the whole body is more useful for identification than a close-up of the head alone.

American cockroach

Periplaneta americana is included because its broad body and familiar indoor sightings make it one of the most visually striking large cockroaches associated with Texas. A large-looking specimen is not automatically a different species: body posture, lighting and the camera’s scale can exaggerate apparent size. Do not handle a cockroach found in food-preparation areas; remove it using ordinary pest-hygiene precautions and investigate how it entered.

How to identify a large arthropod without overclaiming

  1. Photograph before moving it. Include a coin or ruler for scale only if it can be placed nearby without touching the animal. Take one image of the entire body and another showing distinctive features.
  2. Write down the setting. Note whether it was in water, on vegetation, indoors, near a light, or on the ground. Habitat often separates a water bug, walkingstick, crane fly and cockroach more reliably than size does.
  3. Measure one axis at a time. Record body length from the front of the head to the end of the abdomen, then separately note wingspan or leg span. Do not combine appendages into a “length” figure.
  4. Check the taxonomic category. Three pairs of legs indicates an insect; a centipede and a vinegaroon do not fit that pattern. This prevents a common-name list from becoming a biological error.
  5. Compare with an authoritative field guide. Texas A&M AgriLife publishes a Field Guide to Common Texas Insects. For an unusual specimen, a county extension office, museum or qualified identifier can review the photograph.

What the size record does—and does not—say

The seven-inch walkingstick statement is the only explicit maximum in the cited official material for this group. It supports the claim that Texas contains the longest insect reported in the United States, but it does not prove that every giant arthropod on the list is larger than counterparts elsewhere. Nor does it establish a typical length, average mass or a complete state record book.

The remaining entries come from a popular list whose measurements use mixed methods. Until a species-specific authority supplies comparable measurements taken under the same conditions, the responsible conclusion is that Texas has several conspicuously large forms, not that these nine occupy positions one through nine.

Safety around people and pets

Size and frightening appearance are poor substitutes for a risk assessment. The safest response is to give an unknown arthropod space, keep children and pets from mouthing it, and use a container or pest professional rather than bare hands if removal is necessary.

  • Wasps: do not swat at or disturb a suspected nesting area. Watch from a distance and obtain professional help if a nest is in a high-traffic place.
  • Butterflies, crane flies and walkingsticks: avoid touching wings or legs; observation and photography are safer than handling.
  • Cockroaches and water bugs: keep them away from food, bowls and bedding, then clean the area and address entry points.

If a dog or cat is bitten, stung or sprayed and develops facial swelling, repeated vomiting, excessive drooling, weakness or breathing difficulty, contact a veterinarian promptly. Do not apply household chemicals or human medicines to the animal unless a veterinarian directs you.

Cicadas, katydids and the “big insect” season

Not every conspicuous Texas insect follows the same timetable. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension gives common dog-day cicadas life cycles of two to five years. The periodical cicada species that occur in Texas have 13-year life cycles. That 13-year figure applies to those periodical species, not to all Texas cicadas, and a loud emergence should not be interpreted as evidence that every cicada has the same schedule.

Katydids are another source of dramatic summer sound and occasional abundance, but they are not one of the nine animals in the list. Texas A&M Forest Service says katydid outbreaks are generally short-lived and does not recommend insecticide control. It records a 2001 event in Lee County associated with truncated true katydids and extensive defoliation. This is a useful distinction: an outbreak report for a different group cannot be used to label the nine featured arthropods as crop pests.

The practical answer to “What is the biggest bug in Texas?”

If “biggest” means the longest confirmed insect in the cited official sources, the answer is the giant walkingstick, with a reported maximum of seven inches. If “biggest” means widest wings, greatest mass or most intimidating silhouette, the answer changes—and the available material does not provide a standardized comparison. The accurate umbrella answer is that Texas supports a remarkable variety of large arthropods, seven insects plus a centipede and a vinegaroon, rather than a single definitive ranking.
