Biggest Chicken Breeds: Jersey Giants, Brahmas, Cochins and How to Choose

The Jersey Giant is usually the heaviest large chicken by standard adult weight, while Brahmas can be taller and Cochins look exceptionally bulky. Compare their measurements, uses and care requirements before choosing a giant breed.

The Jersey Giant is generally the heaviest of the prominent large breeds compared here. Mature males are typically listed at 13–15 pounds and females at 10–11 pounds. Brahmas can look larger because they may reach about 30 inches tall and carry dense feathering, while Cochins are heavy, rounded and heavily feathered but are kept mainly for ornamental and broody qualities. There is no authoritative worldwide ranking measured on one common system, so “biggest” must mean either standard weight, height or visual bulk.

What counts as the biggest chicken breed?

Chicken size is not one measurement. A breed can lead in body weight, stand taller, or appear larger because its feathers add volume. Published figures also use different terms: some are American Poultry Association-style standard weights, some are typical breed-profile weights, and some describe unusual historical individuals. Treating all of them as interchangeable creates a misleading ranking.

For a practical comparison, use three separate questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which is heaviest by adult standard weight? The Jersey Giant leads among the examples covered here.
  • Which is tallest? Brahmas are the standout, with The Livestock Conservancy reporting birds up to 30 inches tall.
  • Which looks most massive? Brahmas and Cochins can appear exceptionally bulky because of dense down, broad bodies and feathered legs, even when their published weights are below a Jersey Giant’s.

The figures below come from breed standards and profiles rather than a new weigh-in. The Livestock Conservancy’s Jersey Giant page was updated January 8, 2025; its Brahma profile is dated July 6, 2023. The University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension article does not state a publication date on the retrieved page.

Large-breed comparison

Breed Published adult weights Height and appearance Primary role and practical points
Jersey Giant The Livestock Conservancy: mature male 13–15 lb; female 10–11 lb. Oklahoma State standard cock 13 lb; hen 10 lb. Males 22–26 in; females 16–20 in, according to The Livestock Conservancy. Large frame with clean legs. Dual-purpose bird, especially suited to heavy roasters or capons. Slow maturity; the profile commonly allows 8–9 months for useful meat yield. About 150–200 eggs per year.
Brahma The Livestock Conservancy: male 12 lb; female 10 lb. Wisconsin Extension standard cock 12 lb; hen 9.5 lb. Can reach 30 in tall. Feathered shanks and toes, dense down and a broad head make the breed look enormous. Eggs and meat, with cold hardiness and winter laying. Up to 200 medium-brown eggs per year in the Conservancy profile; needs shade and abundant water in hot weather.
Cochin Wisconsin Extension standard cock 11 lb; hen 8.5 lb. Heavily feathered-legged Asiatic breed. Comparative height is not stated in the Wisconsin Extension profile. Mainly ornamental. Its maternal instinct is valued, including use as a foster mother for game birds and other species.

For formal descriptions of recognized breeds and varieties, the University of Wisconsin–Madison Extension points readers to the American Poultry Association’s Standard of Perfection, which describes physical characteristics such as size, shape and color: Wisconsin Extension’s breed guide.

Jersey Giant: the heaviest standard bird in this comparison

The Jersey Giant was developed as a large dual-purpose chicken, and its standard weight is why it is usually the answer to “Which chicken is the heaviest?” The Livestock Conservancy lists mature males at 13–15 pounds and females at 10–11 pounds. Oklahoma State University lists a 13-pound standard cock and a 10-pound hen, and describes the breed as “the largest breed in the American Class” in its Jersey Giant profile.

Size comes with a slower timetable. The Conservancy profile commonly allows eight to nine months before a bird reaches a useful meat yield. That makes the breed a poor choice when the goal is rapid, feed-efficient meat production, even though it can produce an impressive roaster or capon. It is better suited to keepers who can support a large bird through a longer growing period and who want eggs as well as meat.

The same profile estimates roughly 150–200 eggs annually. Egg output is therefore meaningful for a dual-purpose flock, but the breed should not be selected solely for maximum laying. Individual results vary with line, management and whether birds come from production or exhibition stock.

Jersey Giants need infrastructure sized for their frame. Provide wider nest boxes, enough roost-bar room for every bird to stand without crowding, and lower perches so a heavy chicken does not make a damaging leap to the floor. Avoid sharp material beneath a perch because a bad landing or foot injury can be more serious in a very heavy bird. The Conservancy also warns that Jersey Giants do not do well in heat.

Brahma: the tallest-looking giant chicken

Brahmas often win the visual contest. The Livestock Conservancy says they can reach 30 inches in height, and their feathered shanks, feathered toes, deep body and dense down create an imposing silhouette. That does not make them heavier than Jersey Giants by the cited standards: the Conservancy gives 12 pounds for a mature male and 10 pounds for a female, while Wisconsin Extension lists a 12-pound cock and a 9.5-pound hen.

The breed’s feathering is functional as well as decorative. Brahmas are regarded as cold hardy, and the Conservancy describes them as good winter layers, with up to 200 medium-brown eggs per year. Their calm temperament and slow maturity appeal to keepers who want a substantial, manageable bird rather than a fast-growing meat hybrid.

Heat is the major environmental limitation. Dense feathers and a large body make hot weather difficult, so a Brahma flock needs reliable shade, plentiful clean water and good air movement during warm conditions. In a hot southern climate, those provisions are not optional extras; they are part of deciding whether the breed is appropriate.

Cochin: heavy, feathered and exceptionally broody

Cochins are substantial birds, but their appeal is different from the Jersey Giant’s meat-oriented size or the Brahma’s height. Wisconsin Extension gives standard weights of 11 pounds for a cock and 8.5 pounds for a hen. The breed is heavily feathered on the legs and feet, which makes it look rounder and larger than a bare-legged bird of similar mass.

Wisconsin Extension characterizes the Cochin as mainly ornamental and highlights its maternal ability. A broody Cochin may hatch and care for chicks, and the breed has been used as a foster mother for game birds and other species. Choose one when appearance, calm presence and broodiness matter more than fast meat production or a precise height record.

Are Brahmas bigger than Jersey Giants?

It depends on the measurement. A typical Jersey Giant male has the higher published weight range: 13–15 pounds compared with 12 pounds for a Brahma male. A Brahma can be taller, with the Conservancy reporting heights up to 30 inches, while the Jersey Giant profile gives males 22–26 inches. Brahma feathering also increases apparent bulk. Thus, a tall Brahma may look larger in a photograph, but the Jersey Giant is generally the heavier bird by standard adult weight.

Standards are not the same as historical maximums

The Livestock Conservancy records exceptional Brahma individuals documented by 1901 at 17–18.25 pounds for males and 13–14 pounds for females. Those are historical outliers, not the current typical adult size. They should not be used to promise that an ordinary modern Brahma will reach 18 pounds.

Breed standards also describe an ideal, while real birds reflect their breeding line, sex, age, nutrition and purpose. Wisconsin Extension distinguishes production hatchery stock from exhibition stock: production lines may emphasize productivity, whereas exhibition birds can mature more slowly and lay more seasonally. A bird that falls outside a neat table figure is not automatically a different breed, and a very large individual is not proof of a breed-wide average.

Choose the breed by job, not by photograph

For the greatest standard weight

Choose a Jersey Giant if your priority is a very heavy dual-purpose bird and you can wait for its slow development. Plan for larger housing and accept that heat management and feed costs are more demanding than with a smaller chicken.

For height, feathering and winter performance

Choose a Brahma when a tall, feather-legged appearance and cold-weather performance matter. Its winter laying reputation is useful in a cold climate, but shade and water are essential in hot weather. Allow extra time for maturity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For ornamental value and broodiness

Choose a Cochin when you want a conspicuous, feather-legged bird with strong maternal behavior. It is a poor fit if your only objective is efficient meat production, because the breed is principally ornamental in the cited extension description.

For eggs

The published profiles give Brahmas up to 200 medium-brown eggs per year and Jersey Giants about 150–200. These are profile figures, not guarantees for every hen. Line, age, season and whether the birds are bred for production or exhibition all affect the result.

For meat

Jersey Giants are the clearest choice among these examples for a heavy roaster or capon, but their slow maturity means they are not a rapid-turnover meat bird. Brahmas also provide meat value, while Cochins are generally selected for ornamental and maternal traits.

Housing requirements for giant chickens

  1. Measure the usable space, not just the floor plan. Large birds need room to turn, walk and reach feeders without crowding. Provide more roost-bar length than you would for standard-sized hens.
  2. Install lower perches. A heavy chicken jumping from a high roost is at greater risk of leg or foot injury. Use sturdy, stable supports and place landing areas where the floor is not abrasive or sharp.
  3. Use larger nest boxes. Jersey Giants in particular may not fit comfortably in boxes designed for smaller hens. A cramped box can lead to broken eggs, dirty feathers or birds nesting on the floor.
  4. Plan heat protection before buying. Jersey Giants and Brahmas both have documented heat limitations. Shade, dependable water and airflow should be available throughout the hottest part of the day.
  5. Keep floors and walkways safe. Feathered feet collect wet bedding and debris, while a large body magnifies the consequences of a slip. Replace damp or sharp bedding and inspect feet regularly.
  6. Match the flock to the climate. Brahmas are the stronger cold-climate choice in the cited profiles; Jersey Giants require particular caution in heat. Local weather should be a selection criterion, not an afterthought.

How to check standards and buy responsibly

If breed identity matters, compare the bird with the current American Poultry Association standard and ask the breeder whether the stock is purebred and meets the standard. The Livestock Conservancy maintains a breeder directory; its directory is a starting reference rather than a guarantee of current stock or quality. Oklahoma State’s breed page also lists breeder references for Jersey Giants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask specifically whether chicks come from production or exhibition lines, what adult weights the parents reached, and how the flock performs in your climate. Those questions are more useful than relying on a photograph or an advertised record weight.

The practical verdict

Among the documented breeds here, the Jersey Giant is the best answer for maximum standard weight. The Brahma is the better answer for maximum height and dramatic feathered appearance, while the Cochin is the specialist for ornamental appeal and broodiness. Decide which dimension of “big” you actually need, then confirm that your housing, climate and patience match the breed’s demands.
