The commission’s species page also describes average adult length as 2–3 feet. The Reptiles of North Carolina account independently reports 134.6 cm (53 inches) as the maximum recorded total length.

Using the 24–36-inch range and the 53-inch maximum, the difference is simple arithmetic: the reported maximum is 17 inches above the top of the average-size range and 29 inches above its bottom. That comparison is calculated from the published figures; it is not a separate biological measurement or a claim that every copperhead grows toward 53 inches.

The 46-inch preserved North Carolina specimen is important because it is a more specifically described state example, yet it is still shorter than the broader 53-inch maximum. A preserved specimen and a range-wide maximum answer different questions: one concerns a particular item held or documented in a state context, while the other is a published upper figure for the species across its distribution.
State record versus range-wide maximum
The clearest illustration comes from Kansas. The Kansas Herpetofaunal Atlas account for the eastern copperhead cites a 40-inch (102.0 cm) Kansas specimen collected in Jefferson County on July 13, 1984. The same account gives 53 inches as the maximum for the species’ full range.
There is no contradiction between a 40-inch Kansas specimen and a 53-inch range-wide maximum. The Kansas figure is tied to one state and includes a county and collection date. The 53-inch figure is a broader published maximum and is not presented in that account as the size of the Kansas animal. A state record can be well documented while remaining below a maximum reported from elsewhere in the species’ range.

Why the record cannot be turned into a snake story
Online discussions often ask for the name of the person who caught the biggest copperhead, the exact place where it was found or a photograph of the animal. The references supporting the 53-inch figure do not supply those details. They also do not say whether the number came from a preserved voucher, an older literature report, an agency compilation or another type of record.
That missing provenance matters. A length without a measurement method cannot be checked against another length measured under different conditions. What “maximum recorded total length” tells you
The Reptiles of North Carolina account uses the phrase “maximum recorded total length” and gives 134.6 cm. Total length conventionally refers to the full body length from the snout to the tail tip, but the cited page does not explain the procedure used for that value. Because the measurement protocol is not supplied, readers should preserve the source’s qualification rather than treating the number as a laboratory result with a known error range.
The same caution applies to the North Carolina profile’s use of the word “record.” It is reasonable to paraphrase the agency as reporting 53 inches as the record, but not to add an unsupported capture narrative. The published number is useful for understanding the species’ documented size range; it is not evidence that a newly shared social-media photograph has been measured accurately.

How to distinguish a large copperhead claim from an ordinary sighting

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission describes copperheads as having a coppery background and chestnut crossbands shaped like hourglasses or dumbbells. These traits can help readers understand why a very large copperhead might be recognized in the field, but they should not be used as a remote identification guarantee.
Color and pattern can vary with lighting, shedding, camera settings and the angle of the body. A coiled snake also looks shorter than it is, while a wide-angle photograph can make the foreground animal appear disproportionately large. If a snake is encountered, distance is more useful than trying to position it for a better photograph. A picture should document an observation, not prompt handling or close approach.
