Bird flu was confirmed in a non-commercial backyard flock in Dallas County, Texas, on September 24, 2022—not in a new Dallas County detection in 2026. The Texas Animal Health Commission’s current record lists 230 birds in that historical flock entry; that is the flock inventory, not a count of infected or dead birds.

When was bird flu detected in the Dallas County flock?

Samples from the flock were confirmed as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) on September 24, 2022, at the USDA APHIS National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa. The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) announced the detection on September 26, 2022. Sick birds and bird deaths had been observed before testing. TAHC’s September 26, 2022 notice describes the event.

The TAHC’s current avian influenza detections page continues to list the Dallas 01 flock under its 2022 confirmation date. Its current 2026 summary lists one affected premises in one county, with Carson County confirmed January 6, 2026; it does not identify a new Dallas County detection.

What was the Dallas County flock?

TAHC described it as a non-commercial, mixed-species backyard flock. The agency said USDA designated it non-poultry because it belonged to one household, its products were used only within that household, and it had no direct or indirect contact with poultry or poultry facilities. TAHC said state and federal animal-health officials were coordinating a joint incident response.

Is there a current bird flu detection in Dallas County?

The Dallas County report is historical. In the state’s current detection summary, the listed 2026 entry is Carson County, confirmed January 6, 2026, rather than Dallas County. Detection records can change, so consult TAHC’s current page for the latest Texas listing.

What bird flu means for birds and people

Birds

USDA APHIS describes avian influenza as a contagious viral disease of domestic and wild birds. Highly pathogenic strains can be deadly to domestic poultry; low pathogenicity strains typically cause few or no signs. These general descriptions do not establish which signs individual Dallas County birds showed beyond the sickness and deaths reported before testing. USDA APHIS provides general information about avian influenza.

People

CDC’s March 6, 2026 national situation summary says A(H5) bird flu is widespread in wild birds worldwide, with outbreaks in poultry and U.S. dairy cows and sporadic human cases in the United States. CDC assesses the current risk to the general public as low and says it is monitoring the situation. That national assessment is not a personal evaluation of a particular exposure, and the Dallas event notice does not report a human infection linked to the flock. What to do about sick or dead birds in Texas

  • Sick or dead poultry: Report it to TAHC at 1-800-550-8242, the agency’s 24-hour number. Texas DSHS also directs reports of sick or dead poultry to TAHC at that number.
  • A sick or dead caged pet bird: Contact a veterinarian, as advised by Texas DSHS.
  • Dead wild waterfowl: DSHS advises contacting Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) when five or more are found in one place.

If you have contact with animals that may be infected, CDC’s interim H5N1 guidance covers exposure assessment, recommended protective equipment in relevant settings, and monitoring. Follow public-health or animal-health officials’ instructions for your specific situation.
