You can watch them across Nara Park, but they are not domesticated: give them space, keep belongings out of reach, and feed them only locally sold shika senbei if you choose to feed them at all. Plan at least half a day if you want to combine the park with its temples, shrine, or museum.
Why are there deer in Nara?
The deer are part of a long religious and cultural tradition associated with Kasuga Taisha Shrine. According to legend, the kami Takemikazuchi traveled from Kashima Jingu in present-day Ibaraki to Nara riding a white deer. This is a sacred origin story, not a zoological account of how deer arrived in the region.

The Nara City Tourism Association says deer have lived in the area for more than 1,300 years and were protected as divine envoys of the kami of Kasuga Taisha. The Official Nara Travel Guide also describes the deer as protected Natural Monuments and notes that killing one was historically punishable by death. These accounts describe the tradition and its history; they are not a reason to approach or handle the animals.

That finding does not establish that every deer in Nara Park is genetically identical or unchanged. Nara City Tourism Association: Nara’s deer and their history.

Are Nara’s deer wild?
Yes. They are wild Japanese sika deer, not domesticated park animals. Many are accustomed to people, but that familiarity does not make them predictable or safe to touch. Males may be particularly aggressive in autumn, and any deer can crowd visitors when food is involved.
The Official Nara Travel Guide estimates around 1,400 deer living around Nara Park on its page last updated November 28, 2025. The Nara City Tourism Association gives a separate approximate figure of about 1,300. Because the guides provide different estimates, it is better not to treat either as a precise current count.

Can you feed the deer in Nara Park?
Feeding is optional and unnecessary. The deer forage naturally on grass, leaves, acorns, and other plants. If you decide to feed them, use only shika senbei (deer crackers) sold locally for this purpose. Do not give them bread, sweets, vegetables, leftovers, or other food. The tourism association’s page reports that a pack of 10 crackers cost 200 yen in 2024; that dated price should not be assumed to be current.

- When you have finished, show your open, empty hands so the deer can see there is no more food.
- Keep children beside an adult during any interaction.
- Do not litter. Plastic and food wrappers can be mistaken for food, and litter has caused deer deaths.

How do you stay safe around Nara’s deer?
Give deer room and let them move away. Do not tease, harass, grab, ride, or touch them. If one crowds or nudges you, move calmly to create space; do not provoke it by withholding food or making sudden movements. Nara Prefecture’s Nara Park Office and Tourism Bureau guidance, dated August 15, 2024, says: “Direct contact, such as riding on the back, holding, or grabbing the antlers, must not be done as this can cause unnecessary stress and harm to the deer.”
- Keep bags, maps, pamphlets, plastic, and food wrappers close and out of reach.
- Supervise children closely; do not let them chase, corner, or approach deer alone.
- Avoid approaching females during birthing season, males during mating season, and fawns. Do not assume a fawn is abandoned because it is by itself.
- Keep dogs on a short leash and avoid startling the deer.
- Be especially cautious around males in autumn, when they may be more aggressive.
These precautions reflect guidance from the Nara Prefectural Government’s deer-interaction guidance and the Official Nara Travel Guide.

Where can you see deer, and how long should you allow?
The deer roam across parkland and around major visitor sites, so seeing them can be part of a visit to Nara’s historic and natural attractions. The Nara City Tourism Association lists areas around Todaiji Temple, Kofukuji Temple, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Nara National Museum, Tobihino, and Ukigumo-enchi. Tobihino is a grassy area associated with the seasonal Shika Yose deer-gathering event.

The city’s guide recommends allowing at least half a day for Nara Park. Its sample walking routes from JR Nara Station connect Kofukuji, Kasuga Taisha, and Todaiji, but the estimated walking times exclude time spent sightseeing. A shorter stop can work if you mainly want a walk and a chance to observe deer; add time if you want to visit the religious sites or museum.
