The six Iowa counties in the bird-flu report were Sioux, Worth, Monona, O’Brien, Palo Alto, and Sac—but the story was published December 17, 2024. It described H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza detections in commercial and backyard flocks during that month, not a newly reported August 2026 event.

The report titled “Bird Flu Detected in 6 Iowa Counties This Month” described events announced in December 2024—not a new August 2026 outbreak. During that month, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was detected in poultry or backyard birds in Sioux, Worth, Monona, O’Brien, Palo Alto, and Sac counties.

The detections were chiefly an animal-health and agricultural concern. Officials had not determined that all six counties’ cases came from one source, and the available reporting did not show human-to-human transmission. For the general U.S. public, the CDC assessed the risk from H5N1 as low, while people who have close, prolonged, or unprotected contact with infected birds or contaminated environments faced greater risk.

IDALS’s December news index also listed the Sioux County commercial-layer detection on December 9. The contemporaneous report said Iowa had recorded 11 HPAI detections during 2024.

These were county-level reports. They did not mean that every bird, flock, pet, or farm in those counties was infected.

Were the six Iowa detections connected?

Officials did not have enough information to determine whether the December outbreaks were related. It is therefore not accurate to describe the six counties as one confirmed, connected outbreak.

Wild birds were an important part of the surveillance picture. Iowa wildlife officials reported a resurgence in wild-bird detections after nearly a year without detections through routine swabbing of hunted birds. The U.S. Department of Agriculture describes wild-bird surveillance as an early-warning system because wild birds can carry HPAI without obvious illness and may move the virus into new areas during migration.

If you're concerned about the size, choose a net 1.5 times larger than your estimate, or adjust as needed

That makes wild birds a plausible pathway for exposure of domestic poultry, but it does not prove that wild birds caused every Iowa flock detection. The December reporting specifically said there was not enough data to establish whether the outbreaks shared a source.

What does this mean for pet birds and backyard flocks?

Owners of chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and other domestic birds should treat contact with wild birds and their droppings, feathers, water, feed, and contaminated equipment as a biosecurity concern. Practical precautions include:

  • Keep domestic birds away from wild birds and areas where wild birds gather.
  • Prevent wild birds from accessing poultry feed and water.
  • Clean and disinfect footwear, cages, crates, tools, and other equipment before moving them between locations.
  • Limit visitors and avoid sharing poultry equipment with other keepers.
  • Watch birds for unusual illness or unexplained deaths and promptly contact a veterinarian or appropriate state animal-health authority if HPAI is suspected.

Protective equipment may be appropriate for people handling sick or dead birds, but the right precautions depend on the situation. Disposable coveralls, waterproof boots, gloves, eye protection, and respiratory protection are not a universal substitute for current veterinary, agricultural, or public-health instructions.

What is the risk to people?

For the general public, the CDC’s assessment was that the current U.S. public-health risk from H5N1 remained low. That does not mean the virus is harmless, nor does it mean every person faces the same level of risk.

Risk is higher for people with close, prolonged, or unprotected exposure to infected birds, other infected animals, or contaminated environments. This includes poultry and farm workers, backyard-flock owners, animal-care workers, and responders involved in control or cleanup activities.

Human H5N1 illness can range from conjunctivitis and upper-respiratory symptoms to severe disease, including pneumonia, multi-organ failure, and death. The CDC’s assessment identified a severe Louisiana case confirmed on December 13, 2024 as fatal. The Iowa flock detections themselves did not demonstrate human-to-human spread.

Anyone who develops symptoms after a significant exposure to sick or dead birds should tell a healthcare professional about that exposure and seek medical advice promptly. People should not handle potentially infected birds with bare hands.

For safer preparation:

  1. Keep raw poultry and eggs separate from ready-to-eat foods.
  2. Wash hands and clean utensils, cutting boards, and work surfaces after handling raw poultry or eggs.
  3. Cook poultry and egg dishes until they reach 165°F internally.
  4. Avoid undercooked poultry, runny eggs, and raw poultry products.

An instant-read food thermometer can help verify that poultry and egg dishes reach 165°F. A thermometer checks the cooking temperature; it does not replace handwashing, separation of raw foods, or other food-safety practices.

Choose pasteurized milk and dairy products. IDALS and the CDC state that pasteurization inactivates viruses such as avian-influenza viruses. Raw milk can contain pathogens capable of causing serious illness and is not a safer alternative.

What has happened since the December 2024 report?

Dated update — March 3, 2026: IDALS reported H5N1 HPAI in a Washington County backyard flock and described it as Iowa’s fifth H5N1 HPAI detection of 2026. This was a later event and should not be added to the six-county December 2024 count.

The Washington County detection does not change what the original headline meant. The six-county story was a historical December 2024 cluster of reported detections in Sioux, Worth, Monona, O’Brien, Palo Alto, and Sac counties.

What should Iowa bird owners remember?

The most useful takeaway is to separate three issues: the historical count, the uncertainty about how the detections were related, and the practical exposure precautions.

  • The six-county report was published December 17, 2024.
  • It involved commercial and backyard flocks, not every bird in the named counties.
  • Officials had not established one common source for all detections.
  • Wild-bird surveillance can provide an early warning, but a detection in wild birds does not by itself prove the source of a particular flock infection.
  • General-public risk was assessed as low, while direct unprotected exposure to infected birds or contaminated environments carried greater risk.
  • Cook poultry and eggs to 165°F and choose pasteurized dairy products.
