Overheated PTFE (often sold as Teflon) is an immediate, potentially fatal emergency for birds. Avocado can kill birds, while a single firefly may kill a reptile or amphibian. Toxic plants, chewable metals, smoke, pesticides and poisoned prey add other routes of exposure. Remove the animal from the source and contact an avian, reptile or amphibian veterinarian or an animal poison service immediately after any suspected exposure.
What to do first after a suspected poisoning
Do not wait for symptoms. Birds can die suddenly from PTFE gas, and firefly toxin frequently causes death within hours. Move the animal away from the food, fumes, plant, metal or bait into clean air, but avoid exposing yourself to smoke or chemical vapors. Do not induce vomiting, give oil, milk or home remedies, or force food and water unless a veterinarian directs you.

- Stop exposure. Turn off the appliance or leave the contaminated room. For a wild bird, prevent further contact with bait, carcasses or contaminated water without handling the animal unnecessarily.
- Call immediately. Give the veterinarian the species, body weight if known, time of exposure, amount, symptoms and route (eaten, inhaled or skin contact). In the United States, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is 888-426-4435. For human exposure, Poison Control operates webPOISONCONTROL and 1-800-222-1222; use an animal service for pets.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the product label, bait package, plant sample or a photograph of the item. If safe, place vomit or chewed material in a sealed container for identification; do not delay the call to collect it.
- Provide supportive care only as instructed. A clinic may need oxygen, warming, fluids, seizure control, radiographs, blood tests or chelation. There is no universal antidote for plant toxins, and treatment depends on the compound and species.
Open-mouth breathing, tail-bobbing, weakness, collapse, seizures, blindness, repeated regurgitation, severe drooling, abnormal heart rate or sudden lethargy are emergency signs. Transport a bird in a dark, quiet carrier; maintain a species-appropriate temperature for reptiles and amphibians while avoiding overheating.
Foods and prey that are poisonous
Avocado and birds
Avocado skin and fruit contain persin. The ASPCA reports that persin can cause heart damage or death in birds. Never offer avocado, guacamole, avocado-containing baby food or scraps to a companion bird, and keep discarded pits and peels out of reach. A bird that has eaten avocado needs prompt veterinary advice even if it appears normal, because cardiac injury may not be obvious at first.

Fireflies and reptiles or amphibians
Fireflies (lightning bugs) contain lucibufagin, a cardiotoxic compound. ASPCA guidance says ingestion causes severe nausea, can damage and weaken the heart, and often results in death within a few hours. All reptile and amphibian species are considered at risk; bearded dragons are especially vulnerable because they commonly eat prey indiscriminately.
Do not collect insects from the yard for a lizard, frog, salamander or newt unless the species and chemical exposure history are known. “Just one” firefly is not a safe treat. If one was swallowed, call a veterinarian immediately, identify the insect if possible, and watch for gagging, vomiting or regurgitation, weakness, tremors, breathing changes and collapse while arranging transport.
Inhaled toxins: PTFE fumes and smoke
Why overheated PTFE can kill a bird
PTFE is a fluoropolymer used on many nonstick surfaces. When overheated, it releases toxic gases. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center states that overheated PTFE “will kill a small bird within a few minutes of exposure.” Merck Veterinary Manual (updated 2026) notes that acute death may be the only clinical sign.
Potential sources include nonstick cookware, irons, ironing-board covers, self-cleaning ovens, heat-pump elements and some heat lamps. Some PTFE products may outgas at normal temperatures, so the absence of visible smoke does not prove that a product is safe. A kitchen fan that merely recirculates air does not make a bird-safe room.

Keep birds completely away from cooking and from rooms containing PTFE-coated appliances. If a pan or appliance overheats, evacuate the bird to uncontaminated air, ventilate the building if it can be done safely, and seek emergency veterinary care. When replacing equipment, choose products verified by the manufacturer as PTFE-free rather than relying on labels such as “nonstick,” “stone” or “ceramic,” which do not by themselves identify every coating or additive.
Smoke and tobacco exposure
Amphibian skin is highly permeable. Smoke can displace oxygen, carry toxic gases and irritate or damage airways; secondhand tobacco smoke can produce skin, eye and respiratory disease. Merck also reports chronic respiratory and dermatologic problems in birds exposed to passive tobacco smoke.
Do not smoke, vape, burn incense or use aerosol sprays in a bird, reptile or amphibian room. Smoke residues settle on feathers, skin, enclosure furnishings and hands. Wash hands and change contaminated clothing before handling an animal, and move an enclosure away from fireplaces, wood stoves and poorly vented cooking areas.
Plants that should not enter an enclosure
“Natural” does not mean safe. Identify every live plant, cut branch, leaf litter product and decorative material before putting it in a cage, terrarium or outdoor pen. The ASPCA names these hazards:

- Yews: contain taxine compounds that can produce severe poisoning.
- Castor beans: are hazardous seeds and should never be available for chewing or ingestion.
- Sago palms: can cause serious, potentially fatal poisoning.
- Some ivy species: require positive species identification because toxicity varies among plants sold under common names.
For grayanotoxin and other named plant exposures, treatment is supportive; the cited guidance states that no antidote is available for these plant toxins. Remove a suspect plant and retain a labeled sample or clear photographs for identification. Do not assume that washing a leaf makes it safe: systemic plant toxins are not reliably removed from the tissue.
Heavy metals: a recurring hazard for pet birds
Birds investigate objects with their beaks, making small metal parts especially dangerous. Merck identifies lead sources including window blinds, costume jewelry, mirror backings, bird toys, hardware cloth and curtain weights. Zinc sources include galvanized toys, chains, mesh, bells, keys and pennies minted after 1982.
Signs can include loss of appetite, gastrointestinal disease, regurgitation, weakness, excessive urination or thirst, incoordination (ataxia), seizures and blindness. A bird may be poisoned by chewing a coating or swallowing a fragment even when the object looks intact.
Metal-safety inspection
- Remove galvanized mesh, rusty or flaking hardware, bells with accessible seams, chains and clips that can be chewed.
- Keep jewelry, keys, coins, curtain weights and blind cords outside the bird’s reach.
- Inspect mirrors and painted or plated surfaces for exposed backing or peeling areas.
- Use bird products with a documented material specification, and replace any item that develops a damaged finish.
Diagnosis may require blood metal concentrations, radiographs and organ-function tests. Chelation or removal of an ingested object must be directed by an avian veterinarian; do not give over-the-counter binders.

Poisoning of wild birds and other wildlife
Wild birds can be poisoned directly by a chemical or indirectly by eating contaminated prey. The World Organisation for Animal Health groups major wildlife poisonings into anticoagulant rodenticides, heavy metals and pesticides. UNEP/CMS identifies insecticides, rodenticides, poison baits, veterinary pharmaceuticals in carcasses, and lead ammunition or fishing weights as priority risks for migratory birds.
Rodenticides and poisoned prey
Second-generation anticoagulants such as brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum and difethialone persist in rodents and can poison predators and scavengers that eat them. EPA also describes distinct mechanisms for bromethalin (neurologic injury), cholecalciferol (dangerous calcium elevation and organ damage), strychnine (severe muscle spasms) and zinc phosphide (toxic phosphine gas after ingestion).
Do not leave poison bait where birds, raptors, mammals or reptiles can reach it, and do not dispose of poisoned rodents outdoors. Secure bait stations, follow the product label and use non-chemical exclusion or trapping where practical. A dead or dying wild bird near bait should be reported to local wildlife authorities; avoid touching it with bare hands and keep pets away.

Lead ammunition and fishing weights can be ingested directly or through wounded game and discarded tackle. Insecticides may contaminate insects, plants, water and soil. Never apply a pesticide near a nest, aviary, pond or enclosure unless the label specifically permits that use and animals are excluded for the complete re-entry interval.

UNEP/CMS guidance illustrates the scale of some regional incidents: aldicarb accounted for 50% of poisoning cases recorded in Spain from 2005–2010, with carbofuran at 22%; in South Africa from 2006–2008, aldicarb accounted for 33% and carbofuran for 18%. These figures describe the cited local investigations, not a worldwide rate or the risk to every bird population.
When an amphibian itself is poisonous
Frogs, toads, newts and salamanders may produce potent natural toxins. Poison Control lists digoxin-like compounds, tryptamines and tetrodotoxin among them. Exposure can cause numbness of the mouth and throat, severe cardiac effects, neurologic abnormalities and other life-threatening outcomes.
Risk depends on species, geographic population, secretions and the route of exposure. A dog or cat that mouths a toad may develop profuse drooling, pawing at the mouth, vomiting, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors or seizures. A person should avoid bare-hand contact with secretions, rinse the mouth only as directed by a poison professional, and call emergency services for breathing, consciousness or heart-rate changes. Keep potentially toxic amphibians away from pets and do not allow captive reptiles to hunt unknown wild amphibians.

| Hazard | Animals most at risk | Primary prevention | Secondary-exposure concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overheated PTFE gases | Birds, especially small birds | Keep PTFE cookware, irons, self-cleaning ovens and suspect heat sources out of the bird’s airspace; replace with verified PTFE-free equipment. | Fumes can spread through household air before visible smoke appears. |
| Avocado (persin) | Birds | Do not feed fruit, skin, pit or prepared foods containing avocado. | Food scraps and compost can remain accessible after a meal. |
| Fireflies (lucibufagin) | All reptiles and amphibians; bearded dragons are especially indiscriminate feeders. | Use identified, captive-raised feeder insects; prevent wild insect access. | One insect may be enough to cause fatal cardiotoxicity. |
| Toxic plants | Birds, reptiles and amphibians | Identify every plant; exclude azalea, laurel, rhododendron, yew, castor bean, sago palm and unidentified ivy. | Clippings, fallen leaves and contaminated substrate can be eaten later. |
| Lead or zinc objects | Chewing pet birds | Remove galvanized mesh, chains, bells, keys, pennies, blinds, jewelry, curtain weights and damaged toys. | Small fragments can be swallowed after a surface is chipped. |
| Pesticides, rodenticides and lead | Wild birds, raptors, scavengers and pets | Secure chemicals, avoid outdoor poison baits, retrieve carcasses and keep ammunition or fishing weights away from wildlife. | Predators and scavengers can be poisoned by contaminated prey. |
| Smoke and aerosols | Birds and amphibians particularly sensitive to respiratory or skin exposure | Maintain a smoke-free, fragrance-free animal room and wash residues from hands and clothing. | Residues remain on feathers, skin and enclosure surfaces. |
How to reduce risk in daily care
- Make a written inventory of cookware, heaters, lamps, irons, cleaners, plants, metals and pest-control products near the animal area.
- Check manufacturer specifications for PTFE or other fluoropolymer coatings instead of inferring safety from a marketing name.
- Quarantine and positively identify every new plant, feeder insect and decorative branch before use.
- Store pesticides, rodenticides, fertilizers and veterinary medicines in locked containers; keep original labels for emergency identification.
- Inspect cages and terrariums weekly for loose plating, frayed galvanized wire, chipped paint, broken bells and fallen leaves.
- Plan an emergency route and keep the veterinarian and poison-service numbers accessible to every caregiver.
Species-specific feeding is the simplest protection: birds should never receive avocado, and reptiles or amphibians should never receive fireflies. Air quality, plant identification and removal of chewable metals matter just as much as the food bowl, because inhaled and contact toxins can be fatal without an obvious ingestion event.
