Bloodhounds are best suited to people who can provide daily exercise, controlled opportunities to sniff, early reward-based training, secure containment, and attentive health care. They may live happily with families, but friendliness does not make them automatically suitable for every household.

What is a Bloodhound?
The Bloodhound is a large scent hound whose body and behavior were shaped around trailing. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale identifies Belgium as the breed’s country of origin and describes ancient antecedents connected with the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Hubert. Historically, Bloodhounds followed scent trails, including those of wounded game. The breed’s tracking identity later extended into service, detective, law-enforcement, and missing-person work.

That history matters to modern owners. A Bloodhound is not simply a large companion dog with a wrinkled face. Its nose is a primary source of motivation. When an interesting scent takes over, the dog may become persistent and difficult to interrupt. This is why Bloodhound ownership involves management and purposeful scent outlets as well as affection and companionship.
Size, appearance, and physical characteristics
Bloodhounds are substantial, deep-bodied dogs with a long head, deep-set eyes, very long low-set ears, loose skin, facial wrinkles, hanging flews, and a pronounced dewlap. These features are part of the breed’s characteristic construction and expression, not merely decorative traits.
Practical adult size is commonly described as roughly 23–27 inches at the shoulder and up to approximately 110 pounds. Individual dogs vary, and a healthy weight should be judged by body condition and veterinary advice rather than by trying to reach the upper end of a published range. A dog of this size also needs appropriately scaled equipment, sleeping space, food and water bowls, crates, vehicles, and household barriers.

The loose skin, long ears, and hanging lips create practical responsibilities. Drool can reach floors, walls, furniture, clothing, and anyone standing within head-shaking distance. The coat is relatively short, but Bloodhounds can still shed, particularly during seasonal changes.
Bloodhound temperament and family life
Well-socialized Bloodhounds are often affectionate, gentle, and socially inclined. The breed standard describes them as extremely affectionate, non-quarrelsome with companions and other dogs, somewhat shy, and sensitive to both kindness and correction. They can form strong bonds with their people and may enjoy being involved in ordinary family life.
At the same time, a Bloodhound is not guaranteed to be calm, obedient, or easy simply because it is usually friendly. The breed combines sensitivity with independence. It may cooperate enthusiastically one moment and appear to disregard a familiar cue the next when a compelling scent is available. Harsh correction can damage trust and make training less productive; patient, consistent reinforcement is a better fit.

Is a Bloodhound good with children?
A well-socialized Bloodhound may be a kind family dog, but its size and strength require supervision around children. A friendly giant can knock over a small child without meaning to, and young children should not be left alone with any dog. Children also need to learn not to climb on, pull, disturb, or take food from the dog.

Interactions with other animals should likewise be supervised. Bloodhounds are generally described as non-quarrelsome, but individual temperament, socialization, prey interest, the other animal’s behavior, and the circumstances all matter.
Who should not choose a Bloodhound?
A Bloodhound is a poor match for someone seeking:
- Reliable off-leash obedience around distracting scents
- A dog that needs only brief casual walks
- Minimal drool or a spotless home
- Effortless obedience and rapid, repetitive training progress
- A small, convenient dog for a cramped or poorly secured property
- A pet that can safely roam without dependable fencing or supervision
Exercise and scent-work needs
Bloodhounds need daily physical activity and regular opportunities to investigate scent in controlled settings. A suitable routine may include long on-leash walks, structured scent games, tracking practice, and time in a securely fenced area. The goal is not simply to tire the dog physically; it is to give its strongest natural behavior a constructive job.
Tracking, trailing, scent work, obedience, and related activities can be especially rewarding. Bloodhounds and their handlers can work toward recognized trailing titles, and the breed’s traditional tracking purpose remains relevant even when a dog is kept primarily as a companion.

Why fencing and leash control matter
A Bloodhound can become intensely focused after picking up an interesting trail. In that state, it may not respond reliably to a command or return promptly to its owner. The FCI characterizes the breed as primarily a leash hound, and secure fencing is an important part of responsible ownership.
Use a well-fitted leash and appropriate harness or collar system, and consider a suitable long line for supervised training. A long line is not a substitute for a secure fence, handler attention, or recall practice. Never assume that a Bloodhound’s friendliness means it will remain close when free outdoors.
Training a sensitive, independent scent hound
Begin socialization, household manners, and basic obedience as soon as the puppy comes home. Introduce people, stable dogs, surfaces, handling, grooming, car travel, household sounds, and veterinary routines gradually and positively. Early training is particularly important because an adult Bloodhound is too large and strong for unwanted habits to be treated as harmless puppy behavior.
Use rewards such as food and praise, short sessions, clear criteria, and consistent rules. Bloodhound training requires patience and skill because the breed can be devoted and eager to please while also independent and stubborn. If the dog appears to “forget” a cue when it detects a scent, the problem is usually competing motivation and insufficient management—not a lack of intelligence.
Scent games can make training more meaningful. Begin with simple searches in a controlled area, reward the dog for locating the target, and gradually increase the difficulty. A qualified trainer familiar with scent hounds can help build reliable handling skills without suppressing the dog’s natural investigative behavior.

For readers who want more breed-specific background, a Bloodhound training book can provide additional guidance alongside a qualified trainer and veterinary advice. Check the edition and content before buying; no particular title should be assumed to be tested, best, current, or veterinarian-approved without separate verification.
Puppy supervision and crate training
Bloodhound puppies need close supervision. They may chew, investigate, or swallow dangerous objects, including items that carry a person’s scent. Crate training can help with house-training and short periods of safe management, but the crate should be large enough for the fully grown dog and should never replace exercise, companionship, training, or appropriate puppy-proofing.
Keep food, medication, trash, small objects, children’s toys, and valuable belongings out of reach. Secure doors, gates, and storage areas before the puppy arrives rather than waiting for the first escape or swallowed object.
Grooming, drool, and household realities
Brush the coat weekly with a medium-bristle brush, rubber grooming mitt, or hound glove. Weekly brushing helps remove loose hair and gives you a routine opportunity to check the skin. Expect some seasonal shedding despite the short coat.
Inspect the long, low-set ears every day. Look for odor, redness, discharge, sensitivity, or other changes, and ask your veterinarian how to clean them safely. Moisture and debris can be especially troublesome in pendulous ears. Do not insert objects deeply into the ear canal or use a cleaning product that has not been recommended for your dog.
Check facial and neck folds regularly for odor, dampness, redness, or irritation. Clean and dry them when necessary using a method approved by your veterinarian. Routine tooth brushing, nail trims, and general handling practice should begin early, when a puppy is easier to position safely than a full-sized adult.
Plan for a messy dog. Washable bedding, towels placed near water bowls and entrances, and surfaces that can be cleaned easily are practical necessities rather than luxuries. The parent club also cautions owners to organize the home carefully because Bloodhounds may investigate or ingest objects carrying human scent.

Health considerations
Bloat and gastric dilatation-volvulus
As a large, deep-chested breed, the Bloodhound can experience bloat, also called gastric dilatation-volvulus or torsion. This is a life-threatening emergency. Learn the warning signs from your veterinarian in advance, identify an emergency veterinary hospital, and seek immediate veterinary attention if you suspect bloat. Do not wait to see whether the condition improves.

Breed-club guidance discusses practical risk-management measures such as controlled feeding routines, slowing a dog that eats rapidly, avoiding strenuous exercise around meals, and monitoring behavior. These steps do not eliminate the risk of torsion. Ask your veterinarian for a feeding and prevention plan appropriate to your individual dog, age, health, and household routine.
Orthopedic, cardiac, and other concerns
Hip and elbow health deserve attention in a giant breed. Cardiac evaluation is also identified as a core screening area for Bloodhound breeding stock. Depending on a breeder’s program and current recommendations, additional information may include eye, patella, PennHIP, thyroid, and degenerative-myelopathy testing.
A UK Bloodhound Club breed survey has reported cancer and gastric torsion among major causes of death in its surveyed population and continues to encourage participation in hip and elbow schemes. Those findings are UK-specific breed-survey information, not a universal mortality study for every Bloodhound worldwide.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Health clearances and choosing a breeder
When considering a puppy, ask to see documented health clearances for both parents. Core questions include:
- Have the sire and dam received hip evaluations?
- Have they received elbow evaluations?
- Have they received cardiac evaluations?
- Can the records be verified through the relevant registry, such as OFA/CHIC where applicable?
- What additional testing does the breeder perform, and why?
- How are puppies socialized and introduced to handling, sounds, surfaces, and crate routines?
- How does the breeder manage orthopedic development and discuss bloat risk?
- What are the parents’ temperaments in ordinary household settings?
- What support is available after placement?
- Will the breeder take the dog back or help rehome it if the placement fails?
A written contract and a clear lifetime-placement policy are valuable signs of responsible breeding practice. Be cautious if a breeder focuses only on appearance, refuses to show documentation, minimizes health questions, or treats returning a dog as unacceptable. A puppy should be evaluated as a future giant working companion, not only as a cute, wrinkled youngster.

Is a Bloodhound right for you?
A Bloodhound may be an excellent choice if you want an affectionate, social, active dog; enjoy scent-based activities; have room for a very large animal; can maintain secure fencing; accept drool and shedding; and are prepared to train patiently for years rather than expecting instant obedience.
Choose another breed if you need dependable off-leash recall, a low-mess companion, minimal grooming and ear care, a dog satisfied with very little activity, or an uncomplicated first-dog experience. Bloodhounds can be gentle and loving, but they are not low-effort dogs.
The central trade-off is clear: the same nose and stamina that make a Bloodhound exceptional at trailing also make it persistent, distractible outdoors, and determined to investigate. With thoughtful management, regular scent outlets, early training, and responsible health planning, that instinct can become one of the most rewarding parts of life with the breed.

Are Bloodhounds good family dogs?
Bloodhounds can be good family dogs when they are well socialized and supervised. They are often affectionate and non-quarrelsome, but their size, strength, drool, and scent-driven behavior require responsible handling around children and other animals.
Can Bloodhounds be trusted off leash?
No. Bloodhounds can learn reliable behaviors, but an interesting scent may override a recall cue. Use secure fencing, leashes, supervised long-line work, and reward-based training rather than relying on off-leash obedience.
Are Bloodhounds easy to care for?
Their short coat is relatively simple to brush, but Bloodhounds are not low-maintenance household dogs. Expect weekly brushing, seasonal shedding, substantial drool, daily ear checks, wrinkle care, and frequent cleanup.
Are Bloodhounds prone to bloat?
Yes. Bloodhounds are large, deep-chested dogs that can develop gastric dilatation-volvulus, or bloat. It is a life-threatening emergency. Discuss feeding routines and warning signs with your veterinarian and seek immediate veterinary care if you suspect it.
The Bottom Line
A Bloodhound is an affectionate but demanding giant scent hound. Expect daily exercise, regular scent work, secure fencing, leash management, extensive puppy supervision, drool, shedding, ear and wrinkle care, and serious attention to bloat prevention and breeder health screening. It is a strong match for an active, prepared owner—not for anyone seeking effortless obedience or low maintenance.
