Some cyanobacteria produce toxins that can injure the liver, disrupt the nervous system, or impair breathing. A pet may become critically ill within minutes to hours after exposure, and some animals die rapidly.
The warning signs are not identical in every case. They depend on the toxin, its concentration and dose, how the exposure occurred, how long the animal was exposed, and individual factors. A symptom list cannot identify a particular toxin or prove that a bloom caused the illness. If your pet seems sick after going in or near suspect water, contact a veterinarian immediately.

What “blue-green algae poisoning” means
Blue-green algae are cyanobacteria, microscopic organisms that can multiply into a harmful algal bloom in water. Some blooms release toxins; others may not produce the same toxins or the same level of risk. Water can look discolored, scummy, or smell bad, but appearance alone cannot tell you which toxin is present or whether an animal will become ill.
Pets can encounter cyanobacterial toxins in several ways:
#1 Best Overall
- PREPARED HERO PEACE OF MIND - Pets are pets. They get into things, especially when you're not looking. Be ready when your pet accidentally eats something toxic. Keep PawMergency in your kitchen, car, or travel bag—instant protection for those critical moments at home, the beach, or anywhere life takes you.
- GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT FOR YOUR PET - One tube covers dogs & cats up to 30 lbs. Dog weighs 31-60 lbs? Get 2 tubes. Dog weighs 61-90 lbs? Get 3 tubes. Dog weighs 91-120 lbs? Get 4 tubes. Dog weighs more than 121 lbs? Get 5 tubes. We recommend giving at least 1cc/1lb of body weight. Less than the required amount won't fully absorb the toxin — make sure you have enough based on your pet's weight.
- BROAD SPECTRUM ABSORPTION - PawMergency absorbs most common household items such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and many more. It works by binding toxins in your pet's digestive tract before they can be absorbed, allowing them to be eliminated through normal bowel movements. A must have for your pet's first aid kit!
- SUPERIOR MANUFACTURING - PawMergency is proudly made in the USA by a National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) preferred supplier. It’s produced following strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and tested by third-party labs to ensure quality, purity, and potency.
- 2 YEAR SHELF LIFE - After each use, simply put the cap back on the end of the tube and store for up to 2 years in a cool, dry place.
- Swallowing: drinking contaminated water, swallowing water while swimming, or eating contaminated food.
- Skin or eye contact: contact with bloom water can irritate exposed tissue.
- Breathing droplets: tiny droplets or spray from contaminated freshwater can be inhaled.
For dogs, swallowing is a major concern because a dog may drink from a pond, lake, stream, or shoreline and then swallow more water while grooming. The exact exposure route still matters: contact and inhalation can produce a different pattern of signs from ingestion.
Signs in dogs and other animals
Animals can become very sick or die within hours after swallowing some harmful algal bloom toxins. Signs may begin within minutes to hours. A rapidly worsening condition is possible, so do not wait for every sign in the list to appear.
| Possible sign | What it can look like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vomiting | Repeated vomiting or bringing up stomach contents after water exposure | Can accompany toxin ingestion and rapid deterioration |
| Low energy | Marked weakness, unusual tiredness, or inability to act normally | May be an early sign of systemic poisoning |
| Stumbling or falling | Unsteady walking, loss of coordination, or collapse | Suggests neurologic involvement and requires urgent veterinary assessment |
| Excessive drooling | More saliva than usual, often with distress | Can occur with toxin exposure and nausea |
| Difficulty breathing | Labored, weak, or abnormal breathing | Breathing impairment is an emergency |
| Tremors or muscle twitching | Shaking, repeated twitching, or uncontrolled muscle activity | Some cyanobacterial neurotoxins affect the nervous system |
| Seizures | Convulsions, loss of awareness, or uncontrolled movements | A severe neurologic sign requiring immediate care |
These signs are not a complete diagnostic checklist. A pet can have one sign, several signs, or a rapidly changing combination. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises: “Call a veterinarian right away if your animal seems sick after going in or near water.”
Liver-related illness after ingestion
Some toxins damage the liver. Clinical guidance describes ingestion of microcystins and nodularins as potentially causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark or bloody urine, acute hepatitis, or jaundice. Jaundice may appear as yellowing of the whites of the eyes, gums, or skin, but waiting for visible yellowing is unsafe; serious liver injury can develop before an owner recognizes it.

Neurologic and paralysis syndromes
Some neurotoxins can cause muscle twitching and other neurologic signs. At high doses, saxitoxin may cause progressive muscle paralysis. Severe harmful algal bloom illness can include seizures, irregular heartbeat, respiratory paralysis, or coma. These are toxin-specific possibilities, not outcomes that occur with every cyanobacterial bloom.
Symptoms from contact or inhalation
Exposure does not always involve swallowing. CDC guidance lists rash, eye irritation, nose irritation, sore throat, and cough after skin contact or breathing tiny droplets from freshwater blooms. A dog that has been splashed or near spray may show irritation without the gastrointestinal signs associated with ingestion.
Contact or inhalation symptoms still deserve attention when they follow suspected bloom exposure, particularly if breathing becomes difficult or the animal’s condition changes. Because signs overlap with many other illnesses, a veterinarian must assess the animal rather than relying on the exposure story or a single symptom.

Why the same bloom can affect pets differently
“Blue-green algae” does not name one poison. Cyanobacteria can produce different toxins, and toxin levels can vary across a bloom and over time. The clinical picture depends on several factors:

- Toxin type: liver toxins, neurotoxins, and other compounds produce different effects.
- Dose and concentration: a larger swallowed dose or more concentrated water can create greater danger.
- Duration: longer contact or repeated swallowing increases exposure.
- Route: ingestion, skin or eye contact, and inhalation do not carry the same symptom pattern.
- Individual factors: the animal’s size, health, and other circumstances can influence severity.
Symptoms alone cannot identify the toxin, establish how much was absorbed, or prove that the bloom caused the illness. Long-term health effects of harmful algal blooms also remain unclear, and researchers are still learning about them. A normal appearance shortly after exposure should not be used as proof that the water was safe.
What to do if your pet may have been exposed
- Move the animal away from the suspect water or food. Prevent further exposure while you arrange professional help.
- Call a veterinarian immediately if the animal seems sick. Tell the clinic that cyanobacterial or harmful algal bloom exposure is possible and describe the signs and timing.
- Treat sudden or severe signs as an emergency. Difficulty breathing, collapse, tremors, seizures, or rapidly worsening weakness require urgent veterinary attention rather than observation at home.
- Provide the exposure details you know. Explain whether the animal drank water, swam, was sprayed, or may have eaten something contaminated; note when the exposure occurred and when signs began.
- Follow the veterinarian’s instructions. Do not rely on a consumer water test or an online symptom match to diagnose intoxication, and do not delay professional care while trying an unverified home treatment.
There is no single symptom pattern that allows an owner to determine whether a pet needs care. The combination of a possible bloom exposure and any change in behavior, coordination, breathing, or gastrointestinal function is enough to justify a prompt call.

How to reduce the risk of exposure
Keep pets out of suspect water
Do not allow dogs or other animals to enter water that looks discolored, has surface scum, or smells bad. Keep following local health or environmental advisories, which may identify affected locations that are not obvious from the shoreline.
Remember that clear-looking water is not a guarantee
Water appearance cannot identify a toxin, and not every contaminated source will look the same. Follow posted advisories even when the water seems normal. Exposure can also occur through contaminated food, so preventing access to suspect material matters beyond swimming areas.
Act quickly after any questionable contact
If a pet becomes unwell after going in or near a body of water, do not wait for a bloom warning or a dramatic symptom. The CDC’s public guidance is direct: “Call a veterinarian right away if your animal seems sick after going in or near water.”

People exposed to a harmful algal bloom can develop rash, eye or nose irritation, sore throat, or cough after contact or inhalation. Swallowing contaminated water or food may cause stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, muscle weakness, dizziness, or liver damage. Clinical examples include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark or bloody urine, acute hepatitis, and jaundice with microcystin or nodularin exposure; some neurotoxins can cause muscle twitching, and high doses of saxitoxin can cause progressive muscle paralysis.

Serious illness can include liver damage, seizures, irregular heartbeat, respiratory paralysis, or coma. These effects are not expected from every bloom, and symptoms do not establish which toxin is involved. A person who may have symptoms from a harmful algal bloom should contact a healthcare provider. Poison Control is available in the United States at 1-800-222-1222. The CDC states: “If you think you have symptoms caused by a harmful algal bloom, contact a healthcare provider.”
Questions owners commonly ask
Can a dog get sick from swimming without drinking?
Yes, exposure can occur through skin or eye contact and through breathing droplets, although swallowing contaminated water or food can produce gastrointestinal, neurologic, or liver-related illness. A dog that becomes unwell after being in or near suspect water needs veterinary advice.
How soon do signs appear?
Animal signs may appear within minutes to hours after cyanobacterial exposure. The timing varies with the toxin, dose, concentration, duration, route, and individual animal. A delayed start does not rule out a connection.

Does every blue-green algae bloom contain a dangerous toxin?
No. “Blue-green algae” refers to cyanobacteria, and some cyanobacteria produce toxins. The appearance of a bloom cannot tell an owner whether a toxin is present or how hazardous the water is, so avoiding discolored, scummy, or foul-smelling water and following local advisories is the safer approach.
Can symptoms prove that blue-green algae caused my pet’s illness?
No. Vomiting, weakness, stumbling, breathing problems, tremors, and seizures have many possible causes. Symptoms alone do not identify a toxin or prove that a bloom caused the illness. A veterinarian must evaluate the animal and the exposure history.
