Blue Pearl shrimp are a selectively bred, pale-blue freshwater Neocaridina sold under a trade name rather than a consistently settled scientific identity. Aquarium sources variously call them Neocaridina cf. zhangjiajiensis or Neocaridina palmata, so confirm the breeder’s or seller’s name before you buy. In practice, success depends less on the label than on a mature aquarium, stable water, biofilm, modest supplemental feeding, and protection from predators and copper-containing products.
What are Blue Pearl shrimp?
Blue Pearl is a trade name for a selectively bred freshwater dwarf shrimp with a pale blue to blue-white, often translucent appearance. Hobby sources do not use one consistent scientific name. A 2010 Brooklyn Aquarium Society profile described Blue Pearl as a blue color variant of Neocaridina cf. zhangjiajiensis and said the line was originally bred in Germany. A 2011 profile used the same classification. A current specialist retailer instead lists the shrimp as Neocaridina palmata and describes Blue Pearl as a cultivated form. A 2026 hobby guide documents that the disagreement is still present in aquarium-trade usage.

The safest description is therefore “a selectively bred pale-blue Neocaridina sold as Blue Pearl.” Ask which name and line the seller uses, and keep that information with your purchase records if you intend to breed a particular color.

What the scientific evidence does—and does not—show
A peer-reviewed 2021 paper by Klein and colleagues studied Neocaridina palmata sold as White Pearl in a laboratory microplastics experiment. The shrimp were cultured in 20-liter aquaria at 23 ± 2 °C under a 16:8-hour light/dark cycle. Those details establish that N. palmata is used in scientific work; they do not identify aquarium Blue Pearl shrimp, and the study conditions are not a Blue Pearl care prescription.

No authoritative taxonomic revision specifically resolving the aquarium Blue Pearl line is established here. Treat the common name as the useful buying and care term, while treating the species label as something to verify with the individual breeder or shop.
Appearance and how to distinguish the line
Blue Pearls are generally described as pale, milky blue or blue-white and somewhat translucent. Color intensity can vary between individuals and among offspring. Selective breeding is used to maintain a preferred shade, but a batch sold under one name should not be assumed to produce identical adults.
Do not identify every blue dwarf shrimp as a Blue Pearl. Other blue shrimp are sold as color forms of Neocaridina davidi, while Blue Pearl listings may use N. cf. zhangjiajiensis or N. palmata. Because names and trade lines overlap, compare the seller’s stated scientific name, parent stock, photographs, and breeding records rather than relying on color alone.

Blue Pearl care sheets provide ranges rather than a controlled-study-derived optimum. The strongest consistent point in the older aquarium-society guidance is that the aquarium should be well established and its parameters very stable. Sudden swings during water changes, cycling, or maintenance are more concerning than a small difference between two reasonable readings.

| Parameter | Published hobby guidance | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 68–80°F (20–27°C) in the 2010 aquarium-society profile, with 75°F listed as ideal; a 2026 guide suggests 68–78°F (20–26°C). | Choose a steady point in a moderate room-temperature range and avoid rapid changes. These are hobby recommendations, not a tested Blue Pearl optimum. |
| pH | The 2010 profile lists 6.5–6.8 but also calls 7.2 ideal, an internal inconsistency. The 2026 guide suggests 6.5–7.5. | Do not copy the older range as a precise prescription. Test your source water and ask the seller for the range in which the colony is currently kept. |
| Hardness | The 2010 profile gives 3–10 dKH and lists 7 dKH as ideal. | Measure hardness rather than guessing. A GH/KH test kit is useful when checking whether tap or remineralized water is consistent. |
| Tank volume | A retailer recommends at least 20 liters for beginners. | Use 20 liters as a practical beginner minimum from that seller, not as a guaranteed biological threshold. More water volume generally gives you more stability and room for a colony. |
The retailer’s profile gives broad limits, but those limits should not be treated as guaranteed safe boundaries. Before purchase, test pH and hardness in the water you will actually use. If the values differ substantially from the seller’s, plan a gradual acclimation and a long-term water strategy instead of forcing an immediate change.
Build the aquarium before adding shrimp
- Cycle the aquarium completely. Establish biological filtration and confirm that ammonia and nitrite remain at zero on repeated tests. A mature system also grows the biofilm that shrimp graze.
- Add biological surfaces. Plants, wood, rocks, and sponge-filter surfaces provide places to graze and shelter. Fine-leaved plants and mosses are especially useful as cover for young shrimp, although no single plant is required.
- Match the water gradually. Measure the aquarium and transport water, then acclimate slowly enough to limit changes in temperature and chemistry. Avoid replacing a stable routine with abrupt pH or hardness corrections.
- Use gentle filtration. Protect filter intakes with a sponge or other shrimp-safe guard so small shrimp cannot be drawn into the filter.
- Keep maintenance predictable. Small, regular water changes with temperature-matched water are preferable to infrequent, disruptive changes. Remove debris without stripping every surface of grazing growth.
- Check every chemical product. Read medication and fertilizer labels for copper and other ingredients that may be unsafe for invertebrates.
What Blue Pearl shrimp eat
Blue Pearls graze continuously on biofilm and algae and will also pick at food remains. The 2010 aquarium-society care sheet describes them as omnivorous, notes that they eat some algae, and says additional feeding may be required. It suggests foods made for bottom feeders or aquatic invertebrates. A retailer likewise recommends shrimp food alongside natural grazing.
Feed small portions that disappear promptly rather than treating the shrimp as a tank-cleaning service. Overfeeding can foul water and encourage nuisance growth, while relying indefinitely on algae alone can leave a growing colony short of nutrition. Observe the group: if food remains after a short feeding window, reduce the next portion and remove leftovers. In a mature aquarium, natural grazing should be the foundation, with supplemental shrimp food used modestly.

Tank mates and safety precautions
Fish and other animals
Many fish can eat shrimplets, even when they appear peaceful toward adult shrimp. The Brooklyn Aquarium Society guidance specifically warns that fish may consume young and advises avoiding fish when the goal is to raise offspring. Predation depends on the fish species, its size, feeding behavior, plant cover, and the aquarium layout, so no mixed-tank combination should be treated as universally safe.

A species-focused shrimp aquarium gives the highest survival odds for babies. If you keep fish with adults, provide dense cover and accept that fewer young may reach maturity.
Mixing shrimp lines
A 2026 hobby guide advises against mixing Blue Pearls with other selected Neocaridina color lines when preserving a line matters. Interbreeding can produce less predictable coloration in later generations. This is a breeding-management issue, not a claim that mixed shrimp will immediately become unhealthy. Decide whether your priority is a community display or maintaining a recognizable color line, then stock accordingly.
Copper and medication
Copper is toxic to dwarf shrimp. Check the active ingredients in medications, algae treatments, and fertilizers before adding them to an invertebrate aquarium. If a product does not clearly state its shrimp safety, verify it with the manufacturer or use a treatment plan designed for shrimp systems. Never assume that a dose safe for fish is safe for shrimp.

Aquarium-care sources describe breeding as straightforward when a male and female are kept in a mature, maintained aquarium. The young hatch as miniature versions of the adults rather than passing through a free-swimming larval phase. A retailer reports hatching after several weeks and notes that offspring can vary in color. These are hobby observations, not results from a controlled Blue Pearl breeding study, so do not treat any one incubation time or clutch size as universal.

A practical breeding setup
- Start with stability. Maintain consistent temperature, pH, hardness, and maintenance. Breeding attempts are less useful if the adults are repeatedly exposed to large parameter swings.
- Provide cover. Mosses, fine plants, wood, and sponge-filter surfaces give newly hatched shrimp grazing area and refuge.
- Keep food available but restrained. A steady biofilm supply plus small supplemental feedings supports adults and juveniles without allowing uneaten food to decay.
- Protect the young. Avoid fish if maximizing survival is the objective, and guard filter intakes.
- Record the line. Note the parent stock, seller’s scientific name, and which offspring show the desired shade. This matters when trade labels are inconsistent.
Maintaining color in a selected line
Blue Pearl color is pale and variable by nature. The 2026 hobby guide discusses selective breeding, color variation, substrate choices, and culling as ways hobbyists try to maintain a preferred appearance. Those are practical hobby techniques, not settled experimental rules. If you select for color, keep the line separate from other Neocaridina colors, track parentage, and make decisions over multiple generations rather than judging a colony from one batch of juveniles.
Color variation among offspring is not, by itself, proof of disease or poor care. First check the basic conditions—stable water, adequate grazing, and appropriate feeding—then consider whether mixed parentage or ordinary variation explains the result.
Blue Pearl versus other blue shrimp: what to compare
Color names are not enough to establish that two blue shrimp are the same animal. When comparing a Blue Pearl listing with another blue shrimp, ask the seller these questions:
| Comparison point | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Scientific name or stated line | Blue Pearl listings use conflicting names, and another blue shrimp may be a different species or color line. |
| Shade and opacity | Blue Pearls are commonly described as pale and translucent; photographs can vary with lighting and background. |
| Current water conditions | A seller’s acclimation range is more useful than a generic internet number when moving a colony. |
| Interbreeding risk | Mixing selected Neocaridina lines can make later coloration less predictable. |
| Breeding records | Parentage and selection history help you know whether the name represents a stable line or a broad trade description. |
The available evidence does not support a definitive taxonomic comparison chart that assigns every blue trade name to one species. Buy the line you actually want, not merely a photograph with a similar hue.

Troubleshooting common concerns
“My shrimp are losing their blue color.”
Blue Pearl coloration can be pale and variable, and offspring may not match their parents. Check whether the group has mixed ancestry, whether the seller described a selected line, and whether recent maintenance caused instability. Restore a consistent routine, maintain grazing surfaces, and avoid adding unverified chemicals before assuming the color change has a single cause.
“They are not breeding.”
Confirm that the aquarium is mature, the adults include both sexes, and the shrimp have cover and regular access to food. Remove fish that may be eating young. Do not use a precise gestation timetable as a pass/fail test; hobby sources describe several-week hatching windows, and conditions vary.
“Can I keep them with cherry shrimp?”
They may be kept together in some community setups, but mixing selected Neocaridina lines can lead to interbreeding and less predictable offspring. If preserving Blue Pearl color is important, use a separate colony. If the tank is a mixed display, accept that future generations may not retain the original appearance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches“What water parameters should I use?”
Use the seller’s current range as your starting point, test your own source water, and make changes gradually. The published hobby figures span roughly 68–78°F or, in an older profile, up to 80°F; pH guidance spans 6.5–7.5, while that older profile contains a contradictory pH range and ideal value. Stability and measured compatibility matter more than chasing one universal number.
Bottom line for prospective keepers
Choose Blue Pearl shrimp for their distinctive pale-blue appearance, but purchase them with the understanding that the scientific label is unsettled in aquarium commerce. Establish the aquarium first, keep temperature and chemistry steady, support natural biofilm grazing with modest supplemental food, and protect shrimp from fish, copper, and abrupt changes. Keep selected color lines separate if predictable offspring matter. Those practices address the factors hobby sources consistently associate with healthy, productive Blue Pearl colonies without pretending that a single trade name supplies a scientifically fixed species or one experimentally proven care recipe.
