A blue Scottish Fold is a Scottish Fold with a blue-gray coat; “blue” is a color term, not a separate breed. The folded ears that define the Fold are linked to a genetic cartilage and bone disorder called osteochondrodysplasia, so the breed’s welfare concerns matter as much as its appearance. Here’s what the color means, where the breed came from, and what current evidence says about health and care.
What is a blue Scottish Fold?
It is a Scottish Fold whose coat is described as blue, the cat-fancy term for a shade of gray. The color can range from pale, powdery gray to a deeper slate tone; lighting and photo processing can also change how a coat appears in pictures. TICA explains that dilute genes turn black into blue and red into cream in its Scottish Fold breed information and color guide.

“Blue” does not identify a separate breed or a distinct health type. Scottish Folds occur in many colors and patterns, and may have short or long coats. The Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) standard permits any genetically possible color and pattern; it describes solid blue as an even shade from nose to tail, with a lighter shade preferred when the coat is sound. CFA also recognizes blue shaded and blue-cream patterns in its breed standard.

Registry descriptions also include straight-eared cats within the breed divisions. How did the Scottish Fold originate?
CFA and TICA trace the breed to Susie, a folded-ear white farm cat found in Scotland in 1961. CFA recounts that William Ross noticed Susie in the Tayside region. Her daughter Snooks became the foundation queen, and crosses with domestic cats and British Shorthairs helped establish the breed. TICA also dates the discovery to 1961 and lists British Shorthair and American Shorthair as permitted outcrosses in its breeding programs. These are registry accounts of breed history, rather than veterinary assessments of welfare.
What is a Scottish Fold’s temperament like?
TICA characterizes Scottish Folds as intelligent, inquisitive and loyal to their families, sometimes following people around the home. CFA describes them as comfortable homebodies who enjoy human company without constantly seeking it. These are broad breed descriptions, not a guarantee of an individual cat’s personality.

Quietness should be considered alongside movement and play. Cats Protection warns that a cat that appears laid-back may sometimes be reluctant to move, jump or play because of pain. That is a reason to watch mobility and consult a veterinarian when behavior changes—not evidence that every calm Scottish Fold is hurting.

What health concerns are associated with folded ears?
The ear-fold trait and osteochondrodysplasia
The folded-ear trait is associated with a dominant variant in the TRPV4 gene and with osteochondrodysplasia, a disorder affecting cartilage and bone. A 2016 genetic association study by Gandolfi and colleagues examined 44 Scottish Fold cats and 54 controls. It associated the Fold phenotype and the disorder with the p.V342F substitution (c.1024G>T) in TRPV4; the variant was not found in 648 unaffected cats included in the study. These are study sample counts, not estimates of how common or severe the condition is across the breed. The paper is available through PubMed.

Possible signs described by Cats Protection include abnormal bone growth, arthritis, pain, bone swellings and restricted movement; signs may appear early. The UK cat-welfare organization states, “All Scottish Fold cats are affected by osteochondrodysplasia,” and recommends regular veterinary checks for Fold cats already in a home. Its position is a welfare organization’s guidance, not a quotation from a veterinary study. See Cats Protection’s Scottish Fold guidance.
What the clinical studies can—and cannot—tell you
A 2023 study by Sartore and colleagues examined 12 Scottish Fold cats and five Scottish Straight cats. The authors confirmed the variant in the Fold cats in their sample, but only one of the 12 showed clinical signs during the study. They noted that the mutation may not be the only cause or risk factor. This small sample does not establish that the other cats will never develop signs, or provide a breed-wide prevalence or lifetime-severity estimate. The study is indexed at PubMed.

The sources do not establish a reliable population-wide percentage for disease frequency or lifetime severity. That uncertainty should not be mistaken for proof that the folded-ear trait is harmless.
How breed organizations frame the issue
TICA acknowledges degenerative joint disease linked to the same mutation, particularly affecting the tail, ankles and feet. It advises veterinary attention for stiffness or pain, as well as responsible breeding plans and veterinary screening. Cats Protection takes a stronger position: it says all Scottish Folds are affected and advises against acquiring the breed. Screening and monitoring can help identify health problems; they do not remove the genetic concern associated with the folded-ear trait.

How should you care for a Scottish Fold already in your home?
Track mobility and arrange veterinary care
- Schedule routine veterinary checks and mention any stiffness, pain, changes in jumping or reluctance to move.
- Ask your veterinarian about diet or supplements for joint health. Supplements are not a guaranteed treatment and should not replace an examination or veterinary advice.
- If reaching elevated places becomes difficult, consider an accessible route such as a ramp, steps, cat walk or cat tree arrangement suited to the cat’s mobility. Cats Protection recommends environmental adjustments when needed.
Groom according to coat length
- TICA recommends weekly brushing for shorthaired Scottish Folds.
- Some longhaired Folds may need combing several times a week.
A suitable cat brush or comb can help with routine grooming; the needed frequency depends on the individual coat.
Are Scottish Folds recognized or bred everywhere?
Recognition and breeding rules vary by organization and location. Cats Protection says the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) does not recognize Scottish Folds for pedigree registration in the rest of the UK because of welfare concerns. It also reports that Fold breeding is not banned across the rest of the UK, while commercial cat breeding in Scotland is licensed and Fold breeding likely breaches licensing conditions. These are region-specific statements from Cats Protection, not a complete account of laws in every jurisdiction; check current local requirements before relying on them. GCCF describes its welfare, veterinary and genetics committees on its website, but that general information is not itself a Scottish Fold policy statement.
How much does a blue Scottish Fold cost, and are they rare?
Reliable current price figures and a sound rarity comparison are not established here, so a specific price or claim that blue Scottish Folds are rare would be misleading. Blue is one of many coat colors and patterns recognized in the breed. If you are considering a cat, weigh its welfare and care needs rather than treating coat color or scarcity as a measure of quality.
