Yes. Cats can see the light and movement of a flame, but their more limited color vision means they may not experience its colors as people do. No study cited here establishes exactly what a flame looks like to a cat, so it is not possible to say that cats see fire as one particular color.
What a cat can see in a flame
A cat can visually detect a fire’s brightness and flicker. The changing light and movement are visible events, even though a cat’s experience of the flame’s colors is uncertain. A veterinarian-reviewed fire explainer from Catster describes cats as able to perceive a fire’s flicker and movement; feline eye anatomy helps explain why.

Why flicker and movement stand out
The retina contains rods and cones. Rods help with dim-light vision and motion detection, while cones contribute to color vision. Cats have many rods and fewer cones than people, and a reflective layer behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum can send light back through the retina. Together, these features help cats notice light and movement, but they do not reveal the animal’s subjective experience of a flame.

Why no exact flame color can be assigned
Veterinary sources broadly describe feline color vision as more limited than human color vision, but they do not give a single settled account of its full range. PetMD, citing veterinary ophthalmologist Paul Miller, describes cats as dichromats that can distinguish blues and yellows but have difficulty separating red from green. VCA also notes that cats perceive fewer color variations than people and that scientists differ on the precise range; the Merck Veterinary Manual says it is uncertain whether cats see colors. These sources support caution, not a claim that a flame appears gray, blue, yellow, or any other fixed color to a cat.

How cat vision differs from human vision
| Aspect | Cats | People |
|---|---|---|
| Dim-light vision | The Merck Veterinary Manual estimates that cats see six times better in dim light than people. PetMD, citing Miller, gives an estimate of 5.5 to 7 times better. These are source estimates, not universal measured constants. | Less sensitive than cats in dim light, according to those estimates. |
| Color discrimination | More limited than human color vision; the exact range is not settled. Sources describe difficulty distinguishing red from green. | A broader range of colors than cats, according to the cited veterinary sources. |
| Movement and flicker | Rods contribute to motion detection, helping cats notice movement and changing light. | People also see movement and changing light; the sources do not establish a universal comparative ranking for motion detection. |
Dim light is not complete darkness
The tapetum lucidum and rod-rich retina improve a cat’s ability to use available light. They do not let cats see without light. A flame is itself a light source, but that does not mean cats can see in total darkness.
Fire can harm a cat’s eyes and face
Seeing a flame does not make it safe to approach. Heat and smoke can injure a cat, and ordinary instincts should not be relied on to keep it away from danger. In a 2025 study, Coleman and colleagues examined 108 cats exposed to five Northern California wildfire events between September 2015 and October 2020. Sixty-four cats—59.3% of that examined group—had at least one ophthalmic abnormality, with ocular-surface changes the most common finding. This was a clinical series of wildfire-exposed cats, not a risk estimate for all cats near any fire or evidence that brief proximity to a small flame causes the same level of injury.

The authors emphasized careful eye examination after thermal insult. Cornell Feline Health Center advises prompt veterinary evaluation for unusual eye changes, including cloudiness, unequal pupils, squinting, or behavior that suggests impaired vision, such as bumping into objects.
What to do around flames or after exposure
- Keep your cat away from open flames and other sources of heat.
- If a fire or wildfire threatens, evacuate with your cat when it is safe to do so.
- Contact a veterinarian after meaningful heat or smoke exposure, especially after facial exposure.
- Seek prompt veterinary attention if the eyes look abnormal or your cat shows signs such as cloudiness, unequal pupils, squinting, or apparent difficulty seeing.
Do not rely on a cat to warn you about a fire. Cats may notice a smell or sound, but the available evidence does not establish that they can reliably detect a fire before a person does.
