A 27 November 2025 report said WA fisheries sampling found blue swimmer crab numbers were up in the Peel-Harvey Estuary near Mandurah and Cockburn Sound before recreational crabbing reopened on 1 December 2025. The report gave no survey counts or uncertainty range, so “up” is a pre-season indication—not a quantified estimate or a current 2026 stock assessment. As of 4 October 2026, the Perth and South West seasonal closure is in effect through 30 November; check the current rules before planning a trip.
What the 2025 report said about crab numbers
Rachel Fenner’s 27 November 2025 Mandurah Times report described Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) pre-season sampling in the Peel-Harvey Estuary and Cockburn Sound as indicating that blue swimmer crab numbers had increased ahead of the recreational season. The report did not publish numerical survey results, methods, or an uncertainty range. Its headline word “thriving” should therefore be read as a characterization of that reported indication, not as a measured abundance figure.
The report also said fishers had described the preceding Peel-Harvey season as one of their best, and Cockburn Sound catches as good. It suggested that more crabs may have moulted to legal size earlier, possibly because of warmer water. That was a proposed explanation, not evidence that temperature alone caused the reported increase.
Why Mandurah and Cockburn Sound are not the same crab population
DPIRD identifies the main Western Australian blue swimmer crab as Portunus armatus, formerly called P. pelagicus. Peel-Harvey crabs live in an estuary and move into nearby marine waters to spawn. Cockburn Sound crabs, by contrast, spend their lives within the marine embayment. The two places can show positive signals at the same time without representing one connected local population.

- FWC-COMPLIANT FLORIDA CRAB TRAP – Built to meet Florida recreational blue crab pot requirements with rigid 2 x 6-inch TED/BRD entrances, three 2 3/8-inch escape rings, 1.5-inch mesh and a degradable release.
- A BETTER ALTERNATIVE TO A CRAB NET – Unlike a crab net that must be actively worked and pulled when a crab approaches, this baited crab pot can remain set and fishing. The enclosed design helps hold multiple crabs until you retrieve the trap.
- TWO FUNNEL THROATS WITH BRDs – Dual funnel entrances give blue crabs two ways into the trap. Each throat includes a rigid 2 x 6-inch bycatch reduction device designed to help prevent diamondback terrapins from entering.
- BUILT FOR REPEATED SALTWATER USE – This 24 x 14 x 11-inch blue crab trap is made with PVC-coated galvanized wire, stainless steel hog rings, reinforced edges and marine-grade bungee hardware.
- QUICK-ACCESS BAIT WELL – The easy-open bait well lid makes loading and replacing bait simple. A practical crab trap and crab pot for crabbing from boats, docks, piers and shorelines.
Recruitment varies with conditions including wind and currents, water temperature, the timing and amount of rainfall, and ecosystem productivity. Those influences help explain why catches can change substantially from year to year. DPIRD assesses the fishery using fishery-independent trap and trawl surveys, which can examine crab size or age and reproductive condition, alongside commercial monthly returns and estimates of recreational catch and effort.
What the reported increase means for Cockburn Sound
The 2025 headline does not establish that Cockburn Sound had recovered to historic highs. DPIRD says monitoring since 2014 found a notably smaller population than in the 2000s. After a later assessment supported a low level of recreational catch, the area reopened to recreational crabbing on 1 December 2024 with a reduced daily bag limit. A positive pre-season indication in 2025 should be understood against that longer context, not as proof of a return to earlier abundance.

- Large Blue Crab Trap Size – Approximate trap size 11" x 24" x 24" provides strong holding capacity while remaining manageable for recreational crabbing.
- Four-Throat Funnel Entry Design – Four funnel entrances allow blue crabs to enter from multiple directions and move into the main trap chamber.
- 2" x 6" TEDs ON EVERY ENTRY THROAT – Each funnel throat includes properly sized 2 inch by 6 inch Turtle Excluder Devices to meet Florida recreational requirements.
- 2 3/8" ESCAPE RINGS + BIODEGRADABLE DOWEL – Equipped with three 2 3/8 inch inside diameter escape rings and a degradable wooden dowel panel designed to reduce ghost fishing if a trap is lost.
- FLORIDA FWC RECREATIONAL COMPLIANT – Designed to meet Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) recreational blue crab trap requirements when properly rigged and marked in accordance with current regulations.
Crab fishing rules: check the location and date
As of 4 October 2026, the official Perth and South West closure from 1 September through 30 November is underway. It covers coastal waters, rivers, and estuaries between the Swan and Canning Rivers and Minninup Beach, including Cockburn Sound. The closure is intended to protect breeding stocks and give females an opportunity to spawn before fishing reopens. Do not use the 1 December 2025 opening date as notice of the next season’s opening; consult the official WA crab rules for current dates and conditions.
| Location | Daily bag limit | Additional rule |
|---|---|---|
| Swan River, Canning River, or Cockburn Sound | 5 crabs | Boat limit 20, with 5 per recreational fishing from boat licence (RFBL) holder on board, up to 4 holders |
| West Coast Bioregion outside the named river areas, Cockburn Sound, and Geographe Bay | 10 crabs | Do not apply this limit to locations with a separate limit |
| Geographe Bay | 10 crabs | No more than 5 females in the bag |
The WA rules set a minimum carapace width of 127 mm for blue swimmer crabs and limit a boat to 10 drop nets. Return undersized crabs and berried females safely to the water. Berried females carry eggs in a spongy mass beneath the abdomen; DPIRD says they mostly spawn from spring into early summer and may produce multiple clutches of 100,000 to 500,000 eggs per spawning. The size rule protects immature crabs and gives them the chance to breed before capture.

- Ultra-Durable & Rustproof Construction:Forged high-precision steel frame withstands underwater impacts in saltwater bays or rocky rivers; special anti-corrosion coating ensures years of use, outperforming standard crab traps in harsh environments.
- Escape-Proof Double-Layer Mesh Design:High-strength nylon + abrasion-resistant plastic weave creates tight nets, preventing crab claws and fish spines from tearing holes—significantly reducing escapes from minnow traps or crawfish traps.
- Quick-Side Access for Easy Harvesting:Unique side-opening zip allows direct retrieval of blue crabs or bait fish without flipping the entire cage, solving top-entry frustration in traditional fish traps.
- Space-Saving Foldable Structure:Collapses flat in seconds for compact storage in backpacks or boat bags—ideal for hiking to remote streams or coastal crab trapping adventures.
- Instant Setup for Beginners: No assembly needed—just unfold, add bait, and submerge in lakes, rivers, or coastal waters. Start catching crabs, minnows, or crawfish within 30 seconds!
For a trip, first identify the precise waterway or bay, then check whether the seasonal closure applies there and confirm the local bag and boat limits. The limits above differ by area, and rules can change.

DPIRD says Western Australia’s annual commercial blue swimmer crab catch usually exceeds 500 tonnes and accounts for more than half of Australia’s catch of the species. That is statewide commercial context, not a count of crabs in the Peel-Harvey or Cockburn Sound surveys. It should not be used to quantify the recreational-season report.
