If your cat suddenly develops a high fever, profound weakness, poor appetite, jaundice, dehydration, or breathing trouble, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately; symptoms can worsen rapidly and cannot be diagnosed safely at home.
What bobcat fever is and why it is an emergency
Bobcat fever is the common name for feline cytauxzoonosis, a tick-borne disease caused by the parasite Cytauxzoon felis. Bobcats serve as a reservoir host, while ticks transmit the organism to domestic cats. Jaime L. Tarigo, DVM, PhD, DACVP, of the University of Georgia, describes cytauxzoonosis as “a life-threatening infectious disease of domestic cats.”

The illness can progress over a matter of days. Early signs resemble many other feline emergencies, including severe bacterial infection, immune-mediated disease, poisoning, or liver problems. A symptom list, a visible tick, or a recent outdoor trip cannot confirm the diagnosis. A cat that becomes acutely ill needs professional assessment rather than observation at home.

| Sign | What an owner may notice | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| High fever | The cat feels unusually hot, is hiding, or appears markedly unwell | Fever is one of the most commonly reported early findings |
| Lethargy, weakness, or depression | Reluctance to move, inability to jump normally, or unusual withdrawal | Severe weakness can accompany rapid systemic illness |
| Reduced appetite or anorexia | Eating much less than normal or refusing food | Loss of appetite commonly occurs and can worsen dehydration |
| Dehydration | Very low energy, dry-feeling mouth, or worsening weakness | Fluid loss adds to the risk posed by the infection |
| Jaundice | Yellow discoloration of the gums, whites of the eyes, or skin | Indicates serious disease and warrants emergency attention |
| Breathing difficulty | Fast, labored, or distressed breathing; the cat may stretch its neck or avoid lying down | Respiratory compromise is an emergency |
| Enlarged lymph nodes, liver, or spleen | Usually detected by a veterinarian rather than an owner | These findings can support a clinical suspicion but are not specific |
| Low body temperature in advanced illness | The cat feels cool or becomes unusually dull or unresponsive | A severely ill cat may become hypothermic instead of febrile |
| Apparent pain | Restlessness, a tense posture, vocalizing, or resistance to handling | Pain can occur in severe disease and should not be managed with human medication |
Do not wait for jaundice, breathing trouble, collapse, or every sign in the table. Sudden fever combined with lethargy, weakness, or refusal to eat is enough reason to call a veterinarian urgently.
When signs appear after a tick bite
Merck Veterinary Manual describes a typical onset of about 5–14 days after transmission, with roughly 10 days as the average. A tick may have detached before you notice it, so the absence of a visible tick does not rule out exposure.
Transmission has been documented after a tick was attached for more than 36–48 hours. That figure describes a documented transmission condition, not a safe period for waiting. If a cat becomes ill after possible tick exposure, seek veterinary advice immediately rather than monitoring for a particular number of hours.
Clinical deterioration can occur over several days. A cat that was merely quiet in the morning may become profoundly weak, dehydrated, jaundiced, hypothermic, or short of breath later. Phone the clinic while arranging transport so staff can prepare for an emergency arrival.

Where bobcat fever occurs and how cats are exposed
The disease is associated mainly with the southcentral and southeastern United States. Merck has reported domestic-cat cases in Missouri, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Texas, Kentucky, Kansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Nebraska, Iowa, Virginia, and Illinois, and notes that the distribution has expanded. This list reflects states reported in that reference; it is not a complete, current incidence map.
The lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) is identified as the vector. Cats can encounter ticks in yards, wooded margins, tall grass, brush, or other outdoor areas. Outdoor access raises exposure, but an owner may never find a tick on the cat or in the home. A cat’s lifestyle and local tick activity should therefore be discussed with a veterinarian when assessing risk.
CAPC advises considering cytauxzoonosis when compatible clinical signs occur. Geographic history helps a veterinarian set priorities, but it does not replace examination and testing.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to do if your cat may have bobcat fever
- Call a veterinary clinic now. Describe the onset, the most severe signs, outdoor or travel history, and any possible tick exposure. Tell the receptionist if the cat is struggling to breathe, collapsing, jaundiced, or too weak to stand.
- Transport safely. Keep the cat in a carrier, minimize handling, and keep the environment calm. Do not force food, water, or oral medication into a weak or breathless cat.
- Do not give human drugs. Pain relievers, fever reducers, antibiotics, and leftover prescriptions can be toxic or interfere with diagnosis. Do not attempt an internet-sourced treatment plan.
- Bring useful information. Note when the cat last ate and drank, when symptoms began, recent outdoor access, travel, tick products already used, and any medications. If a tick was removed, tell the veterinarian when and where it was found.
- Follow emergency instructions. A clinic may direct you to an emergency hospital, especially when breathing is abnormal, the cat is collapsed, or the gums or eyes look yellow.
How veterinarians diagnose cytauxzoonosis
No home test can establish bobcat fever. A veterinarian combines the history and physical examination with laboratory testing and assessment of the cat’s overall condition.

Blood smear and tissue cytology
Parasite forms may be visible on a peripheral blood smear or in tissue cytology. Results depend on the stage of disease and the quality of the sample, so a negative or unclear initial finding may not settle the question.
PCR testing
Polymerase chain reaction testing can detect parasite genetic material. CAPC recommends collecting blood for molecular diagnostics early in the disease and, when possible, before chemotherapy. Samples should be submitted to experienced laboratories that use appropriate quality controls.
Why timing matters
Starting treatment before samples are collected can affect the ability to detect the organism. Do not delay emergency care to obtain a “perfect” sample; the veterinary team will balance stabilization with diagnostic collection.
Treatment is intensive veterinary care
Merck and CAPC describe combination treatment with the antiprotozoal drug atovaquone and the antibiotic azithromycin, together with supportive care. A veterinarian must decide whether this regimen is appropriate, prescribe it, calculate the dose, monitor response, and adjust care as the cat’s condition changes.

Supportive treatment may include intravenous or other prescribed fluids, nutritional support, temperature management, oxygen or other respiratory assistance, and monitoring of organ function. The need for hospitalization depends on the severity of illness and the clinic’s assessment.
Never substitute human medication, a leftover antibiotic, or a product intended for dogs. Even a cat that appears improved can remain critically ill, and stopping or changing therapy without veterinary direction can be dangerous.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preventing tick exposure
Prevention reduces risk but cannot guarantee that a cat will avoid infection. Merck considers indoor-only access the best prevention and recommends routine use of a tick preventive under veterinary guidance. An indoor lifestyle also reduces exposure to the outdoor environments where ticks quest for hosts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Discuss a cat-safe preventive with your veterinarian. Product choice should account for the cat’s age, weight, health, other medications, and local tick exposure. Never apply a dog product to a cat unless a veterinarian specifically confirms its safety.
- Use the product exactly as directed. Correct species, dose, interval, and application technique matter. A product that kills ticks after attachment is not automatically equivalent to one that repels ticks or prevents transmission.
- Check cats that go outdoors. Examine the coat and skin after outdoor access, especially around the head, neck, ears, and between the toes. Ask a veterinary professional how to remove an attached tick safely.
- Reduce contact with tick habitat. Limiting roaming in brush, tall grass, and wooded edges can lower the number of opportunities for ticks to attach.
Topical products used alone have not prevented every case. Product performance also varies by active ingredient, formulation, tick challenge, and study conditions, so no preventive should be presented as absolute protection.

What the available prevention studies show
Merck summarizes small preliminary studies rather than a guarantee for individual cats. In one study, a collar containing imidacloprid 10% and flumethrin 4.5% was tested against infected ticks: none of 10 treated cats became infected, compared with 9 of 10 untreated controls. In a separate small study of a topical selamectin-and-sarolaner combination, 0 of 8 treated cats tested positive compared with 7 of 8 untreated controls.
These sample sizes are small, and Merck states that more studies are needed. The results support discussing evidence-based tick control with a veterinarian; they do not establish that every collar or topical product will prevent every bite or transmission event, and they are not a prescription for a particular cat.
When a cat needs emergency care immediately
Call an emergency veterinary service without waiting if your cat has labored breathing, collapse, profound weakness, yellow gums or eyes, inability to stand, severe dehydration, or an unusually low body temperature. A high fever with rapid deterioration is also an emergency. If you are uncertain, explain the signs by phone; veterinary staff can advise whether to come directly to an emergency hospital.
Recommended Free Tools
Because signs overlap with many other dangerous diseases, urgency is based on the cat’s condition—not on proving that a tick or Cytauxzoon felis is involved. Prompt assessment gives the veterinary team the best opportunity to stabilize the cat, collect appropriate samples, and begin indicated treatment.
