Botha’s Lark is in serious trouble because most of its specialised highland-grassland habitat has been converted, fragmented or managed in ways that no longer provide the short, open structure it needs. BirdLife South Africa’s 2025 regional assessment classifies the species as Critically Endangered (CR A2bc) in South Africa, while the 2024 global assessment lists it as Endangered. The figures used to describe its population are not interchangeable: one is a regional estimate of mature birds, while another counts birds currently known at two populations.
Conservation now focuses on finding and monitoring birds, protecting breeding sites, improving grazing and fire practices, working with landowners and securing formal protection for remaining strongholds. The same work also requires restraint from birders: visiting known breeding localities during the September–November breeding period can disturb the birds conservationists are trying to protect.

| Assessment | Category | What it means here |
|---|---|---|
| BirdLife South Africa regional assessment, 2025 assessment page | Critically Endangered (CR A2bc) | The South African regional assessment records an observed decline of more than 80% over three generations, approximately 10 years, linked to habitat loss and degradation. |
| Global assessment, 2024 | Endangered | This is the global category and should not be presented as if it were the South African regional label. |
“Critically Endangered” is the more severe of these two labels within the relevant assessment system, but the difference does not mean the bird is secure outside South Africa. Botha’s Lark is endemic to South Africa, so the country’s grassland changes affect the species’ entire world population.

How many Botha’s Larks are left?
No single number answers every version of that question. BirdLife South Africa publishes a regional population estimate, while its active project page reports the birds currently known from two populations. Those figures describe different things.
| Figure | Source and date | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 340 mature individuals, with a range of 200–650 | BirdLife South Africa regional assessment, 2025 assessment page; estimate attributed there to Colyn et al. 2024a | A regional estimate of mature birds, not a direct tally of every individual seen recently. |
| Around 20–30 birds known from two populations | BirdLife South Africa Botha’s Lark project page, current page accessed 13 October 2026 | The project’s currently known-birds figure. It is not a replacement for the regional estimate and should not be added to it. |
| More than 80% decline over three generations (about 10 years) | BirdLife South Africa regional assessment, 2025 assessment page | The decline wording used for the CR A2bc assessment. |
| 86% reduction from a previous density estimate | BirdLife South Africa regional assessment, 2025 assessment page | A comparison with an earlier density estimate based on recent survey work. |
| 90% estimated decline over 10 years | BirdLife South Africa proposed observational guidelines, 2024 | A source-specific estimate in that guidance document, not a figure to combine with the regional assessment’s percentages. |
The safest answer to “How many are left?” is therefore: the 2025 South African regional assessment estimates 340 mature individuals, with an uncertainty range of 200–650, while the current project page says only about 20–30 birds are known from two populations. The gap reflects different methods and purposes, not evidence that one source is counting the wrong species.
Where does Botha’s Lark live?
The lark occupies short, highland grassland rather than a broad variety of habitats. Historical descriptions place its range from Harrismith and Verkykerskop in the eastern Free State through Volksrust, Wakkerstroom and Daggaskraal in southern Mpumalanga to Hendrina, Kriel and Secunda in central Mpumalanga.

BirdLife South Africa identifies areas including Memel, Steelsdrift–Volksrust, Wakkerstroom–Daggaskraal and Groenvlei. The distribution pattern, together with the assessment’s signs of range contraction, indicates that historical occupancy should not be mistaken for a continuous present-day range.
These grasslands provide low vegetation in which the lark can move and feed, while leaving enough cover for nesting. A patch can still look like open veld to a person and be unsuitable to the species if grass height, litter, burning history or grazing pressure has changed.

Why is Botha’s Lark endangered?
Conversion to crops and other land uses
BirdLife South Africa’s regional assessment estimates that 30% of suitable highland grassland within the species’ range has been lost to direct land-use change. Ploughing, pasture conversion and other development remove habitat outright. Once a grassland patch is converted, nearby fragments may no longer support a viable local population because the lark has fewer places to feed, nest and move between territories.
Fragmentation isolates the remaining patches
Remaining grasslands are divided by fields, roads, settlements and intensively managed pasture. Fragmentation reduces the amount of connected habitat and can leave small groups separated from one another. It also makes surveys harder: a bird may disappear from one patch while surviving elsewhere, creating uncertainty about whether a local absence is a true population loss or a detection problem.

Grazing and burning can erase the required grass structure
The species depends on a particular short-grass structure. Severe grazing can remove cover and food plants; poorly timed or overly frequent burning can leave ground exposed or prevent the development of suitable vegetation. Changes in livestock management can have similar effects when they alter how long grass remains short, when it is cut or burned, and how much litter accumulates.
It would be inaccurate to say that cattle are always harmful. The assessment notes that Botha’s Lark can persist under some cattle-only regimes. The outcome depends on intensity, timing, stocking levels and the resulting grass structure, not simply on whether cattle are present.
Climate change is a projected additional pressure
Climate models cited in the regional assessment project possible future contraction of the lark’s range. That is a projection, not proof that climate change caused the recent decline. Habitat conversion and damaging management are the directly identified current pressures; a warmer or less predictable climate could make already-fragmented populations less resilient.

How grassland management changes the bird’s prospects
Land decisions can either preserve the conditions the lark uses or make a surviving patch unsuitable. The relevant comparison is not “farmed versus unfarmed” but what happens to vegetation and disturbance in each place.
| Management factor | Risk to Botha’s Lark | Conservation question |
|---|---|---|
| Land conversion | Permanent loss of nesting and feeding habitat; remaining patches become isolated. | Can conversion be avoided, and can existing strongholds remain connected? |
| Grazing intensity | Heavy or continuous grazing may remove the short, structurally varied sward the lark needs. | Does the grazing plan maintain suitable height, cover and recovery periods? |
| Fire timing and frequency | Annual or poorly timed burns can remove cover during sensitive periods or simplify vegetation. | Can burning be scheduled and spaced to retain usable habitat through the breeding season? |
| Livestock type and system | Some systems may degrade habitat, but cattle-only management is not automatically incompatible. | What does monitoring show about the actual grass structure and bird use under that system? |
| Formal protection | Unprotected sites remain vulnerable to future conversion or incompatible management. | Can landowners and authorities secure lasting protection for occupied areas? |
BirdLife South Africa estimates that as much as 60% of the remaining grassland may be unsuitable because of associated management regimes. This figure is separate from the 30% estimate for direct land-use loss; it should not be presented as a combined 90% loss of all habitat.
What conservationists are doing now
Finding birds and tracking breeding
BirdLife South Africa reports targeted surveys, nest monitoring, nest cameras and ringing. These activities answer different questions: surveys reveal where birds remain, nest monitoring identifies breeding success and threats, cameras can document events that observers would miss, and ringing helps identify movements or repeated use of sites.
Working with landowners
Because much of the lark’s habitat is working agricultural land, conservation cannot rely only on government reserves. Engagement with landowners is intended to retain grassland, adjust grazing and burning where needed, and protect nests and occupied patches without treating farmers as the enemy.
Coordinating a Species Action Plan
The project’s five-goal Species Action Plan spans research, stakeholder engagement, education and awareness, policy and advocacy, and collaboration. This combination matters because a survey can locate birds but cannot by itself prevent a field from being ploughed or a breeding site from being disturbed.

Seeking stronger protection for strongholds
The assessment says only three of 20 occupied pentads have protection status. Conservationists are working toward ratification of the Hoëveld Protected Environment, which could provide a more durable framework for safeguarding important grassland. Formal designation does not automatically guarantee good management, so implementation and cooperation remain essential.
Protecting the whole landscape
A small breeding group was found in summer 2024/2025, according to a November 2025 BirdLife South Africa media release. The release names Birding Ecotours as a collaborator and quotes Ernst Retief, BirdLife South Africa’s Landscape Conservation Programme Manager: “conserve the complete landscape where the species occurs, benefiting not only the Botha’s Lark but other birds, mammals, invertebrates, and plants too.” That is an organizational call for landscape-scale conservation, not an independent evaluation of recovery results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you visit to see a Botha’s Lark?
BirdLife South Africa strongly discourages visits to regularly occupied and known breeding localities during September–November. The reason is practical: repeated approaches, people leaving vehicles or paths, and attempts to get closer for a photograph can disturb nesting birds and expose sensitive sites.
- Do not plan a visit to a known breeding locality during September–November.
- Do not drive off-road or leave established paths on foot in open grassland.
- Respect private property and any landowner or reserve restrictions.
- Never disclose a sensitive nest location publicly or encourage others to approach it.
A sighting is not more valuable than a successful nest. If you encounter a lark incidentally and legally, keep your distance, avoid pursuit and follow local access rules.
How readers can support the species
BirdLife South Africa’s project page welcomes donations and states that 100% of donations go toward its Botha’s Lark conservation work. Giving to that project supports the surveys, monitoring, landowner engagement and action-plan activities described above. It is a direct conservation action, not an endorsement of a product or an invitation to visit a breeding site.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell us
The status labels, population figures and decline percentages come from different documents and assessment contexts. The regional estimate of 340 mature individuals is not the same measure as the project’s 20–30 currently known birds. Likewise, the regional page’s “more than 80% over three generations” wording, its 86% density comparison and the 2024 guidance document’s 90% estimate should remain attributed to their respective sources.
BirdLife South Africa’s published summaries establish an alarming trajectory and identify habitat and management pressures, but they do not by themselves provide a new independent review of the 2024 population survey’s methods. That limitation does not weaken the practical case for protecting the remaining grasslands; it explains why continued standardized surveys and transparent monitoring are so important.
