He was adopted as a companion for Alex, Karen’s 17-year-old Thoroughbred/American Quarter Horse, and became part of a farm where horses and other animals meet people through art classes and animal-assisted therapy.
The move did more than give one relinquished horse a home. It created a carefully considered relationship between two horses, expanded the animal community at Whispering Brook, and illustrated Karen’s belief that adopting one at-risk animal can make space for another.

Why Karen was looking for another horse
Karen was not simply searching for a horse to fill an empty stall. She wanted a compatible, people-friendly companion for Alex and hoped the new horse could participate in the work she was already doing at Whispering Brook. Her farm combines a studio with animal-assisted therapy and year-round art classes for people of different ages and abilities.
That purpose shaped the questions she asked while considering horses. Temperament around people mattered, as did the possibility of introducing a new horse to an established resident. The ASPCA shared descriptions and photographs of multiple horses and spoke with Karen several times before arranging Brandon’s transport. The process gave her a chance to explain the home she could offer rather than choosing from a photograph alone.
A home built around relationships
Whispering Brook is home to ducks, chickens, goats, rescued pigs, sheep, rabbits, two dogs and horses. Karen’s plan was therefore broader than a two-horse pairing: Brandon would join a mixed-animal setting and a program in which people observe, create and interact with animals.

She brought those interests together in classes and animal-assisted therapy, including programming for people who have experienced traumatic brain injury. The ASPCA story presents these activities as Karen’s practice and experience. It does not report a clinical trial, measured treatment outcome or evidence that contact with Brandon treats a medical condition.
Brandon’s time at the ASPCA center
Brandon was one of 10 Arabians relinquished to ETAC in spring 2024. Libby Hanon, the ASPCA’s manager of equine adoption and marketing, described him as physically in good shape while noting that routine vaccinations, dental work and hoof care had been deferred. ASPCA trainers also worked with him.
“Deferred” describes care that had not been kept current; it does not, by itself, establish a diagnosis or explain why care was delayed. The feature does not provide a detailed abuse history, and readers should not infer one from the fact of relinquishment. Brandon’s documented story is that he entered ETAC, received attention from staff and trainers, and was then matched with an adopter who could meet his needs.
Finding a match online
Karen found Brandon through the ASPCA’s adoption platform. Online listings can be a starting point, but a listing cannot show every aspect of a horse’s behavior, health history or compatibility. In Karen’s case, conversations with Hanon and the exchange of descriptions and photographs helped connect the horse’s profile with the realities of her farm.

Anyone considering a similar adoption should use the listing to form specific questions: what care records are available, what handling has the horse experienced, how does the horse behave around people and other horses, and what support is available after placement? The answers will vary by horse and by organization.

How a 1,600-mile adoption was arranged
Brandon’s route from central Oklahoma to northeast Connecticut covered approximately 1,600 miles and took two days. Cailin Caldwell, director of the ASPCA Right Horse Program, says the program defines a long-distance transport as 250 miles or more. Brandon’s trip met that threshold by a wide margin.
“We recognize some people may face logistical hurdles if they want to adopt a horse from long distances, which we define as 250 miles or more,”
— Cailin Caldwell, director of the ASPCA Right Horse Program

The ASPCA arranged the transport, and Horse Adoption Express provided a $500 stipend toward expenses. That payment is the amount described for Brandon’s journey, not a universal transport rate or guaranteed benefit for every adopter. Current eligibility, coverage and program terms should be confirmed directly when an adoption is being considered.
“Brandon’s 1,600-mile route from central Oklahoma to northeast Connecticut met the criteria.”

Questions to settle before a long move
A long-distance adoption adds decisions that a nearby placement may not. Before committing, an adopter can ask the rescue or adoption center to clarify:
- Which veterinary, vaccination, dental and hoof-care records travel with the horse?
- What transport company or program will handle the route, and how will updates be communicated?
- What costs are covered, what costs remain with the adopter, and is assistance a stipend or reimbursement?
- What arrival and settling-in plan does the organization recommend for this individual horse?
- Who should be contacted if the horse struggles after arrival?
Those questions do not guarantee an easy trip, but they turn an exciting plan into a documented one. Brandon’s story shows that distance can be managed when the adopter, adoption center and transport program coordinate.

Introducing Brandon to Alex
Karen created an introduction pen with a temporary fence line separating Brandon and Alex. She expected the process could take up to two weeks. Instead, the horses greeted each other nose-to-nose immediately.
The quick greeting is a memorable part of the story, but it is Karen’s experience, not a universal horse-introduction rule. The ASPCA feature does not identify the type of fence used, provide a step-by-step training protocol or say that every pair should be introduced on the same schedule.
What the anecdote does—and does not—show
The setup gave the horses a physical boundary while allowing them to see and smell one another. It also gave Karen room to observe their first response before turning them out together. Her expectation of up to two weeks shows why an adopter needs flexibility: a planned timeline may be longer or shorter than the actual introduction.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompatibility remains individual. Age, prior experience, temperament, health status, space and the resident horse’s behavior can all affect how an introduction unfolds. A calm first greeting is encouraging, but it does not replace continued observation or a plan for separating the horses if tension develops.
Brandon’s place among the other animals
After joining the farm, Brandon became part of a community that includes livestock, companion animals and people in classes. The ASPCA feature recounts one especially poignant interaction: a ewe whose lamb had recently died appeared to become happier in Brandon’s presence, according to Karen.
That is Karen’s observation of two animals at her farm. It is not presented as a verified finding about grief, horse behavior or the effect of one species on another. The value of the moment in the story is personal: Karen saw an unexpected connection and felt that Brandon contributed to the atmosphere of the farm.
Her broader view is expressed in her own words:
“Animals have a profound effect on us, and we do on them,”

Those statements explain why Brandon matters at Whispering Brook, while remaining Karen’s reflections rather than independent evidence of clinical outcomes. The story supports describing the farm’s activities and relationships; it does not support claiming that animal-assisted therapy cures or treats a condition.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How art and animals meet at Whispering Brook
Whispering Brook offers year-round classes for artists of different ages and abilities. The program includes people who have experienced traumatic brain injury and incorporates animal-assisted therapy alongside art. In this setting, animals are part of the environment in which people can make art, pay attention to another living being and build a shared routine.
Brandon’s role is therefore not defined by a single task or a certification described in the feature. He is a resident horse whose presence contributes to Karen’s farm and studio. The account leaves room for the ordinary work behind that role: learning an individual horse’s boundaries, maintaining daily care and deciding when an interaction is appropriate for both the animal and the person.

Keeping the human and animal needs together
Any program involving animals has to protect the animals as well as serve participants. Brandon’s story does not list a formal welfare protocol, so readers should not assume that a particular class structure or therapy method is endorsed by the ASPCA. A prospective adopter building a similar program should define quiet spaces, supervision, handling rules and a way to stop an interaction when an animal shows stress.
Those safeguards are consistent with the central idea of Karen’s work: connection is a relationship, not a prop. The horse’s comfort and choice are part of the setting, even when the human activity is the visible goal.
Why one adoption can affect more than one horse
For Karen, adopting Brandon also carries a practical rescue message. When a horse leaves an adoption center for a suitable home, a stall, staff attention and organizational capacity may become available for another animal. She describes that idea directly:
“Making room for one animal means you’re making room in a shelter or rescue for another.”

This is the story’s central adoption lesson, not a numerical claim about shelter capacity. The immediate, documented result is that one 20-year-old gelding moved from ETAC into a home that had prepared for him. The wider effect depends on future adopters, available placements and the resources of each rescue organization.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Define the home you can offer. Write down the resident animals, available space, daily care schedule, riding or companionship goals and any role the horse might have around people.
- Describe the match honestly. Tell the adoption organization about your experience, facilities and the temperament of animals already on the property. A clear description helps staff suggest suitable horses.
- Ask for records and observations. Request the available veterinary, dental, hoof-care and vaccination information, along with details about handling, turnout and interactions with other horses.
- Plan the journey. For a long-distance placement, confirm the route, travel duration, responsible transport provider, expected expenses and any available assistance. The $500 Horse Adoption Express stipend described in Brandon’s case should not be assumed for another adoption.
- Prepare a gradual introduction. Set up a safe way to observe the new horse and resident animals with separation available. Allow the timeline to follow the animals’ behavior rather than a fixed promise; Brandon and Alex greeted each other quickly, but Karen had prepared for as long as two weeks.
- Build in follow-up. Keep contact details for the adoption center and review how the horse is settling, eating, moving and responding to people. Ask for help promptly if the placement raises concerns.
Adoption is a commitment to an individual horse, not a shortcut to a particular emotional or therapeutic result. Brandon’s placement worked because Karen had a defined purpose, communicated with the adoption team and made room for a new relationship on a complex, multi-animal farm.
What Brandon’s second chance represents
Brandon arrived at ETAC after being among 10 relinquished Arabians and left for a home more than a thousand miles away. At Whispering Brook, he became Alex’s companion and one participant in Karen’s network of animals, students and creative work.
The ASPCA feature does not claim that every adoption will mirror his immediate greeting, his transport assistance or his apparent bond with another animal. It offers something more grounded: a documented example of matching an older horse with an adopter who understood her existing animals and the kind of environment she wanted to build.
That is why Brandon’s story travels beyond one farm. A suitable adoption can change one horse’s daily life, give an adopter the companion they sought and create capacity for another at-risk horse. The connections that follow are real to the people and animals living them, even when they cannot be reduced to a clinical measurement.
