Brazilian Jaguar’s Record Swim: What Camera Traps Actually Show

Camera traps documented the same male jaguar on mainland Brazil and a reservoir island four years apart. Researchers infer a minimum 1.27 km water crossing, though the route is unknown.

A male jaguar in Brazil was documented on the mainland in 2020 and on a forested island in 2024, leading researchers to infer that it crossed at least 1.27 kilometers (0.79 miles) of water. A direct route would be 2.48 kilometers (1.54 miles), but the animal’s path was not observed. The report describes the event as the longest documented jaguar swim.

How researchers identified the jaguar

Camera traps photographed a male jaguar on the mainland in 2020 and on a forested island in the Serra da Mesa reservoir in Goiás, Brazil, in August 2024. Researchers matched the animal across the images by its coat spot pattern. The records establish sightings at both locations, not a continuous recording of the animal’s journey between them. Phys.org and Live Science reported the finding in 2025.

How far did the jaguar swim?

The safest claim is a minimum inferred water crossing of 1.27 km (0.79 miles), using a route that may have included a small islet as a stepping stone. A direct mainland-to-island route could have been 2.48 km (1.54 miles). The jaguar’s actual route is unknown, so the longer distance is possible rather than confirmed as a continuous swim. Phys.org reports both route estimates.

Evidence or route What is known
Camera-trap locations The same male was identified on the mainland in 2020 and on an island in August 2024 by its coat pattern; the crossing itself was not recorded. Live Science
Possible route via islet At least 1.27 km (0.79 miles) of water, the conservative inferred minimum. Phys.org
Possible direct route 2.48 km (1.54 miles); the animal is not known to have taken this route. Phys.org
Previous reported record About 200 m, as described in 2025 coverage; the new minimum is more than six times that distance. Phys.org and Live Science

Why is it called a record?

The reporting compares the inferred minimum crossing of 1.27 km with a previous verified jaguar swim of about 200 m. On that basis, coverage calls this the longest documented or confirmed jaguar swim. That description refers to the longest reported evidence of a jaguar making such a crossing; it does not mean researchers watched the full swim or established the precise route. Smithsonian Magazine also covered the event.

Why did the jaguar cross?

No one has established the animal’s motive. Study lead Leandro Silveira suggested it may have been exploring or searching for females or territory. Panthera scientist Fernando Tortato proposed hunting capybaras as another possibility. These are hypotheses, not findings about this jaguar’s behavior. Live Science quoted Silveira saying, “We generally expect animals to seek the best cost-benefit option for movements, choosing narrower, less risky crossings,” and Tortato saying, “We know that jaguars do not see a river as a barrier.” Live Science attributes both quotations to the scientists.

What the crossing may mean for jaguar conservation

The observation suggests that at least some reservoirs may be passable to jaguars. It does not show how often jaguars cross reservoirs, whether such crossings are safe, or how dams affect jaguar populations overall.

Phys.org reported that the study authors proposed an aquatic-cost scale for connectivity modeling and future hydropower assessments:

  • Low cost: water crossings below 300 m.
  • Medium cost: 300–1,000 m, with stepping stones.
  • High cost: more than 1,000 m of open water.

This is a proposed framework, not a validated universal standard. The finding can inform questions about habitat connectivity, islands, boat traffic, and habitat retention when planning infrastructure, but one documented event cannot measure the population-level effects of dams. Phys.org and Smithsonian Magazine discuss these conservation implications.

What is known about the study’s publication status?

Phys.org identified the underlying work as Leandro Silveira et al., “Kilometre-scale jaguar swimming reveals permeable hydropower barriers: implications for conservation in the Cerrado hotspot,” posted on bioRxiv in 2025, DOI 10.1101/2025.09.05.674446. Live Science described it as not peer reviewed at the time of its coverage. The current peer-review or journal-publication status is not established here, so it is safest to describe the record as reported rather than assume a current publication status.
