The “black-eyed creature” reported from a remote Pacific mine is a snake: Dendrelaphis atra, a tree snake associated with Misima Island in Papua New Guinea. Its formal scientific description appeared in 2025, when herpetologist Fred Kraus named it as one of four new Dendrelaphis species from islands in Milne Bay Province.
What is the snake’s name?
The species is Dendrelaphis atra. The name was formally introduced in Fred Kraus’s taxonomic paper, published in the journal Zootaxa on April 4, 2025. The paper places it in the Dendrelaphis punctulatus group.
Indian Defence Review’s January 2026 account describes the snake as nearly black with dark eyes and says the first encounter was in an area of Misima historically affected by mining. The mine-site detail and that precise appearance come from the secondary account; the paper’s abstract establishes the new species and its island context, but does not independently confirm those details.
Where was Dendrelaphis atra found?
D. atra is associated with Misima Island, in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. Kraus’s paper describes four new Dendrelaphis species from outlying Milne Bay islands. It reports island-specific species on each of the three large islands of the Louisiade Archipelago and on Woodlark Island.

Why did scientists need a new species description?
The Australo-Papuan Dendrelaphis snakes have a complicated taxonomic history. Kraus notes that 28 names had been applied to snakes in this regional group, while a recent revision had recognized nine valid species before the 2025 paper. Sparse specimen coverage and unreliable use of names in museum collections have also made it difficult to resolve species ranges.

To distinguish the newly described snakes, the study uses coloration and, for several species, differences in the male reproductive organ known as the hemipenis. Kraus writes: “Melanesian species of Dendrelaphis are largely diagnosed by unique color-pattern features, and this work identifies additional diagnostic features of color pattern for these species and confirms the critical importance of hemipenial differences in distinguishing among similar-appearing species in this region.”
The abstract discusses melanization across the new species, but does not clearly attribute every pigmentation pattern to D. atra. It therefore does not establish that this particular snake changes from a pale juvenile to a black adult.

What does the new classification tell us—and what doesn’t it?
A formal description gives a species a scientific name and explains the evidence used to distinguish it from similar snakes. It does not, by itself, establish how many individuals live on Misima, whether the population is increasing or declining, what role the snake plays in its ecosystem, or its conservation status. Those details are not established in the paper’s abstract.
Indian Defence Review’s January 27, 2026 report supplies the mine-site framing and the reported black appearance. The primary taxonomic source is Fred Kraus’s 2025 Zootaxa paper, “New species of snakes of the genus Dendrelaphis (Squamata: Colubridae) from the Milne Bay Islands, Papua New Guinea.” A PubMed record provides a bibliographic cross-check.
