Bringing a Kitten Home: 13 Supplies to Have Ready First

Prepare a kitten-safe room with 13 essentials: familiar food, dishes, litter supplies, carrier, scratcher, toys, grooming tools, ID collar and a warm resting place.

Before pickup, prepare the basics for toileting, feeding, transport, scratching, play, grooming, identification and sleep. Set up a quiet, kitten-proof room with a low-sided litter box, the food the kitten already eats, separate food and water dishes, a secure carrier and a scratching surface. Add the remaining supplies before arrival so the first days are calm and safe.

What to buy before the kitten arrives

The list below treats 13 as a practical checklist, not a veterinary rule or scientific threshold. The essentials are the items that let a kitten eat, drink, eliminate, travel safely, rest and play from the first day. Preferences often become clear only after you see how the individual kitten uses a box, accepts a litter texture or chooses a scratching angle, so buy sensible starter equipment rather than assuming one product suits every cat.

Cornell University’s Feline Health Center identifies a litter box, food and ideally a scratching post as basic provisions. The ASPCA’s kitten-preparation guidance adds food and water bowls, toys and a prepared, hazard-free home. The supplies below combine those essentials with practical companions for cleaning, transport, grooming and identification.

1. Kitten food

Ask the breeder, shelter or foster caregiver exactly what the kitten is eating, including brand, recipe, texture and feeding schedule. Start with that food for the first days. If you want to change it, move gradually to a nutritionally complete diet formulated for the kitten life stage rather than switching abruptly. A veterinarian can adjust the plan for growth, medical conditions or a kitten that is underweight.

Confirm the kitten’s age and whether it is fully weaned. A kitten that is not yet weaned may need a commercial kitten milk replacer under caregiver or veterinary guidance. Do not substitute cow’s milk; ASPCA nutrition guidance warns that it is not an appropriate replacement.

2. Food dish

Use a stable, easy-to-clean dish and keep it well away from the litter box. Wash it regularly so old food does not accumulate. The dish does not need to be elaborate; cleanliness and a location where the kitten can eat without being startled matter more than a particular material or shape.

3. Water bowl

Provide a separate bowl of fresh water and place it away from the litter area. Refresh it often and watch whether the kitten prefers a wide, shallow bowl or another shape. Keeping water available at all times is especially important while the kitten is settling into a new environment.

4. Litter box

Choose a simple, uncovered box that the kitten can enter and leave without climbing over a high wall. Low sides are useful for a very small kitten. Most cats prefer straightforward boxes, but individual preferences vary; if the kitten avoids the first box, try a different size or style rather than assuming the kitten is untrainable.

Cornell recommends one box per cat plus one. Thus, a single-kitten household generally starts with two boxes, while a home with resident cats needs an additional box. Place boxes in quiet, accessible locations, not beside feeding dishes. Scoop waste and remove soiled litter regularly so the box remains acceptable.

  • Scratching Board & Engaging Toys: The non-toxic corrugated cardboard scratching board helps maintain healthy claws and protects your furniture. Add the interactive scratching toy to combat boredom and encourage activity. Various teaser and play toys stimulate natural instincts and support physical health.
  • Durable & Pet-Safe Materials: Made with high-quality PP and TPR, the litter box and scoop are sturdy, easy to clean, and built for daily use. Collars and toys are crafted from pet-friendly plastics and soft cotton fabrics. Rest easy—your cat’s comfort and safety come first.

5. Litter

Unscented, fine-textured litter is a reasonable starting choice because many cats accept it. That is a preference, not a guarantee. Avoid changing texture and scent at the same time as moving the kitten into a new home; too many changes can make it harder to identify the cause of avoidance. If the kitten consistently rejects the litter, offer a second box with another unscented texture and observe which one it uses.

6. Litter scoop

A scoop is the practical tool for carrying out the cleanliness routine Cornell recommends. Select one that lets you remove clumps or solids without emptying the whole box. The cited kitten checklists emphasize a clean box rather than a particular scoop design, so treat this as a useful accessory, not a prescribed model.

7. Carrier

Have a secure carrier before pickup; you will need it for the journey home and later veterinary visits. The kitten should fit comfortably while being contained, with enough room to turn around and lie down, but not so much open space that it can be thrown around during travel. Secure the carrier in the vehicle according to the carrier and vehicle instructions, and never carry a loose kitten outside a contained space.

Leave the carrier open in the safe room after arrival. A familiar towel can make it less intimidating and gives the kitten a hiding option that is still easy to move for an examination.

8. Scratching post or pad

Offer an appropriate scratching surface from day one. Cornell and ASPCA both identify a scratching post or pad as a core supply. Some cats prefer a vertical post; others choose a horizontal pad. Stability, a surface the kitten can grip and enough room to stretch are more important than a decorative design. Put it near the sleeping area or another place the kitten naturally visits, then add a second orientation if its preference becomes clear.

9. Interactive toys

Start with a small selection of safe toys that encourage chasing, batting and problem-solving. Interactive play provides exercise and helps the kitten learn that hands are not prey. Inspect toys frequently and remove anything that develops loose pieces, frayed material or a part small enough to swallow. Toys containing strings or cords should be used only with direct supervision and stored away afterward.

10. Brush

A soft brush lets you introduce grooming in short, calm sessions. Begin when the kitten is relaxed, touch a few strokes to areas it accepts and stop before it struggles. Early, positive practice can make future coat care and veterinary handling easier. The appropriate brush depends on coat length and density; ask the veterinarian or groomer what suits the kitten’s coat.

11. Comb

Keep a comb as a second grooming tool, particularly if the kitten has a longer or thicker coat. A brush and comb do different jobs, and ASPCA includes both in its general cat-care checklist. Use gentle pressure, check for tangles and never pull through a mat. If a knot is tight against the skin, have a professional remove it rather than cutting close to a moving kitten.

12. Safety collar and ID tag

ASPCA’s checklist includes a safety cat collar with an identification tag. Fit the collar according to its instructions and check it as the kitten grows; a kitten can outgrow a collar quickly. Put a current phone number on the tag and keep the information updated if your contact details change. A collar is not a substitute for secure doors and windows or permanent identification discussed with your veterinarian.

13. Bed, box or warm blanket

Provide a warm, washable resting place. A bed, cardboard box or folded blanket can work; the quiet room and a secure retreat matter more than buying a premium bed. Give the kitten a choice of a covered hiding spot and an open sleeping area, and keep bedding dry and free of loose threads.

Set up a quiet home-base room

For the first days, use one quiet room rather than giving a newly arrived kitten unrestricted access to the entire home. Put the litter box at one end and food and water at the other, with the carrier, resting place, scratching surface and a few toys within easy reach. A smaller area helps the kitten locate resources, decompress and establish litter habits before exploring more rooms.

Kitten-proof before opening the carrier

  • Secure electrical cords and keep chargers out of reach.
  • Close doors, windows and other escape routes; check screens and gaps.
  • Remove chewable objects, small parts, medications, cleaners and other household hazards.
  • Move poisonous plants and any unstable object the kitten could knock over.
  • Block narrow spaces behind appliances or furniture where a frightened kitten could become trapped.

ASPCA’s home-preparation guidance specifically emphasizes securing cords, doors and windows, removing chewable items and keeping poisonous plants and household hazards inaccessible. Inspect the room at the kitten’s eye level; hazards that seem high to an adult may be reachable to a climbing kitten.

How to choose between common options

There is no researched “best” brand or model for these supplies. Use the following feature checks, then let the kitten’s behavior guide adjustments.

Supply Compare Practical starting choice
Litter box Entry height, simplicity, size and cleaning access Uncovered, low-sided and easy to reach
Litter Scent and texture, while watching acceptance Unscented, fine-textured litter
Scratcher Stability, material and vertical versus horizontal orientation A stable surface near the kitten’s activity or sleep area
Carrier Secure containment, ventilation and appropriate fit A carrier large enough to turn around in and suitable for vehicle travel
Food and water dishes Stability, cleanability and separation from the litter area Two washable dishes placed away from the box

These are feature-based decisions, not results from comparative product testing. Product prices, availability and specific models change, so evaluate the item in front of you rather than relying on a permanent “best” list.

First-day procedure

  1. Transport securely: Bring the kitten home in the closed carrier, not loose in the vehicle.
  2. Open the carrier in the prepared room: Let the kitten come out voluntarily and keep noise and visitors low.
  3. Show the resources: Place the kitten near the litter box, then point out food, water, scratching surface and resting spots without forcing interaction.
  4. Keep changes limited: Continue the familiar food and routine initially; introduce diet changes gradually.
  5. Observe quietly: Note eating, drinking, urination, stool, hiding and play. Do not punish accidents or drag the kitten from a hiding place.
  6. Expand access slowly: Once the kitten is eating, using the box and acting comfortable, open another area while keeping the home-base room available.

Veterinary care and homes with other cats

Cornell advises arranging a veterinary examination as soon as possible after adoption. Bring the kitten’s existing records and ask about prior vaccinations, nutrition, parasite control and grooming. The veterinarian can also confirm age, weaning status, body condition and a suitable preventive-care schedule.

If resident cats live in the home, keep the newcomer separated until a veterinarian has examined it and it has received necessary vaccines. Use separate food, water, litter and bedding during this period. Gradual introductions after the health check reduce avoidable stress and protect the resident animals while the kitten’s medical history is clarified.

Common problems and adjustments

The kitten will not use the box

Check access first: the sides may be too high, the location too busy or the box too close to food. Keep it clean and offer an additional box with an unscented, fine-textured litter. Persistent avoidance, straining, diarrhea or no urine warrants prompt veterinary advice rather than repeated product changes.

The kitten refuses the new food

Return to the familiar food and transition more slowly. Ask the veterinarian about appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea or a diet appropriate to the kitten’s age. Do not use cow’s milk as a substitute for a kitten that needs milk replacer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The kitten hides constantly

Keep the room quiet, provide a covered retreat and avoid pulling the kitten out. Confirm that food, water and the litter box are easy to reach. A veterinary examination is particularly important if hiding is accompanied by weakness, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting or refusal to eat.

The kitten scratches furniture

Place the scratching post or pad beside the targeted area, reward use with calm attention or play and try the other orientation if the kitten ignores it. Choose stability and a suitable surface before adding more equipment.

What matters most if you are shopping today

Prioritize the litter box and litter, familiar complete kitten food, separate food and water dishes, a secure carrier and a scratching surface. Then make the room safe, add a few toys and comfort items, and schedule the veterinary visit. Grooming tools and identification supplies complete the setup, but no single premium product can replace a calm room, clean resources and close observation during the adjustment period.
