Bringing Home a New Puppy: The Complete Before-and-After Checklist

A new puppy needs more than food and a cute bed. Use this safety-first checklist to prepare your home, choose correctly sized supplies, manage the first day, and establish feeding, potty, sleep, and veterinary routines.

The safest puppy arrival starts before pickup: puppy-proof the home, prepare a small supervised area, buy only correctly sized essentials, collect health records, and book a veterinary visit for the first few days. Keep the first day quiet, introduce the household gradually, and use a predictable pattern of meals, naps, play, and potty trips while your puppy adjusts.

What to have ready before pickup

Use the checklist below as a practical starting point, not a requirement to buy every possible accessory. Your puppy’s age, expected adult size, coat, chewing style, health history, and home layout should determine the final choices. The American Kennel Club’s new-puppy checklist and PetMD’s veterinarian-reviewed checklist (updated June 1, 2026) both organize supplies by these everyday needs.

Need Have ready Selection and timing notes
Food and water Food the puppy already eats, two stable bowls, and fresh water Ask the breeder, shelter, or rescue for the current food and feeding schedule. Choose food with a nutritional adequacy statement for growth and ask your veterinarian about a diet for the puppy’s age and needs. A gradual change is usually easier than an abrupt switch.
Rest and containment Correctly sized crate, pen, or baby gates; washable bedding The space should allow the puppy to stand, turn, lie down, and stretch without becoming a large unsupervised toilet area. Use containment to limit access while you supervise; it is not a substitute for supervision.
Walking and identification Adjustable collar, leash or properly fitted harness, and ID tag Check the fit every few days as the puppy grows. Ask the veterinarian about microchipping and register the chip with current contact details.
Play and enrichment A small rotation of puppy-safe chew, food, and interactive toys Choose dimensions that cannot be swallowed. Inspect toys before and after use; soft toys and tennis balls can be torn apart by some puppies.
Potty and cleanup Poop bags, paper towels or washable cloths, and an appropriate cleaner; pads if useful for your household Put supplies where accidents are most likely. A cleaner designed for pet-soiled surfaces helps remove odor cues that can draw a puppy back to the same spot.
Care Brush or comb, nail clippers, and puppy-appropriate dental supplies Buy according to coat type and your veterinarian’s guidance. These items can wait until arrival day if the puppy is otherwise prepared.

Keep vaccination certificates, deworming and parasite-prevention details, microchip information, adoption or purchase paperwork, and the puppy’s current food instructions in one folder. Take that folder to the first veterinary appointment.

Puppy-proof every room and outdoor area

Get down to puppy height and look for anything that can be chewed, swallowed, spilled, or pulled down. The ASPCA’s household inspection guidance specifically highlights medicines, cleaning products, laundry detergent, food, garbage, toxic plants, cords, and small objects. Children’s small toys can cause an intestinal blockage if swallowed.

  • Move prescription and over-the-counter medicines into closed cabinets or secured drawers.
  • Store cleaners, detergent pods, cosmetics, pesticides, and batteries behind latches; do not rely on a high but open shelf.
  • Keep food, trash, compost, and pet medications inaccessible. Chocolate, onions, grapes, raisins, xylitol-containing products, and many other foods can be dangerous, so ask your veterinarian about local poison risks.
  • Identify house and garden plants. Remove toxic plants or block access rather than assuming a puppy will ignore them.
  • Bundle or cover electrical and charging cords. Secure dangling blind cords and tablecloths that can be pulled.
  • Pick up coins, hair ties, socks, children’s toys, craft materials, and other objects small enough to fit in the puppy’s mouth.
  • Inspect windows, balconies, stairs, fencing, pools, ponds, and outdoor gates. Add barriers where a fall, escape, or drowning is possible.
  • Close doors or use gates to keep the puppy out of rooms that cannot be made safe. Start with one prepared area instead of opening the entire home.

Save the phone number and directions for your nearest emergency veterinary clinic. If you suspect poisoning, call a veterinarian or an animal poison service immediately rather than waiting for symptoms; do not induce vomiting unless a professional tells you to.

Create one calm starter zone

Set up a low-traffic area before the puppy arrives. Place the crate or pen, washable bedding, water, a small amount of food, and a few toys there. Keep the planned potty location easy to reach from this zone. During the first hours, the puppy can rest, drink, and explore this limited area while you learn its signals.

Crate, pen, or gates?

A crate gives a puppy a defined sleep space; a pen provides more room for movement; gates let you partition a room or hallway. Compare secure construction, easy cleaning, portability, and how each option fits your floor plan. A growing puppy may need a divider or replacement size. Never use a crate for long periods simply because it is available, and never leave a collar or harness on an unattended crated puppy if it could catch.

Bedding and temperature

Use washable bedding that cannot be shredded into swallowable pieces. Keep the area away from drafts, direct heat, and strong household traffic. Puppies sleep frequently; protect uninterrupted rest instead of waking the puppy for constant handling.

Food, bowls, and the first feeding plan

Ask for the exact food name, amount, meal times, treats, and any digestive or allergy history. Keep the familiar food for the initial transition unless a veterinarian instructs otherwise. If you change diets, ask how to phase it in and monitor stool, appetite, and energy.

Choose bowls that are stable, easy to wash, and appropriate for the puppy’s muzzle. Keep fresh water available unless your veterinarian gives a specific medical instruction. Measure meals rather than free-pouring, and record what the puppy eats during the first week; those notes help the veterinarian assess growth and stomach problems.

Collar, harness, identification, and safe transport

Put an ID tag on an adjustable collar with a phone number that will be answered. Check that you can slide two fingers beneath the collar and recheck it as the puppy grows. A harness may offer more control for some puppies, but it must not rub behind the elbows or allow an escape. Let the puppy investigate new equipment indoors and reward calm wearing before going outside.

Plan the ride home before pickup. A secured travel crate or crash-tested restraint keeps the puppy from roaming in the vehicle. Bring a towel, spare bedding, cleanup supplies, and the puppy’s records. Do not allow a nervous puppy to ride loose on a lap or in the cargo area.

Toys and chewing: buy for supervision, not appearance

Offer several toy types rather than a large pile: a puppy-safe chew, a food-stuffable toy, and a simple interaction toy are enough to begin. Select a size that cannot pass fully into the mouth and a material suited to the puppy’s bite. The AKC’s first-day guidance warns that puppies may rip soft toys or tennis balls and swallow pieces.

  • Inspect seams, squeakers, rope fibers, and chewed edges every time.
  • Remove a toy immediately if pieces break off or the puppy can fit it behind the back teeth.
  • Supervise tug, fetch, and all new toys; “indestructible” is not a safety guarantee.
  • Rotate a few toys to keep them interesting and wash them according to their material.

Redirect biting from hands, clothing, furniture, and electrical cords to an approved chew. Calmly end play when teeth become too rough, then offer rest; overtired puppies often chew more intensely.

Potty setup and cleaning routine

Decide the outdoor toilet spot before arrival and use the same route and door. If weather, mobility, or apartment access makes indoor pads useful, place them in one consistent location rather than scattering them throughout the home. Keep bags, towels, and cleaner within reach of that route.

Take the puppy to the chosen spot after waking, eating, drinking, and active play, and whenever it begins sniffing, circling, or leaving the room. Wait quietly, then reward the moment it finishes. Accidents are information about timing, access, or supervision; punishment can make a puppy hide to eliminate. Clean thoroughly and adjust the routine instead.

The first day: a low-pressure sequence

The AKC preparation guidance recommends a gradual introduction rather than immediate full-house access. Use this sequence as a flexible framework:

  1. Travel straight home. Keep the ride quiet and offer a potty opportunity as soon as you arrive.
  2. Show the potty location first. Give the puppy time to sniff and reward the desired behavior.
  3. Enter the starter zone. Offer water, a small meal if it is mealtime, and a chance to rest. Avoid a parade of visitors.
  4. Introduce people one at a time. Let the puppy approach; ask household members to sit calmly, avoid crowding, and allow retreat to the crate or pen.
  5. Explore in short sections. Open one additional puppy-proofed area only when the puppy is relaxed and supervised.
  6. Repeat the basic cycle. Potty, food or water, brief play, calm interaction, and sleep form a useful rhythm.
  7. Settle for night. Put the sleep area near you initially if that helps you notice distress or a need to potty. Keep nighttime responses quiet and boring.

Do not take a not-fully-vaccinated puppy to dog parks, pet-store floors, or other places heavily used by unfamiliar dogs until your veterinarian explains local disease risks and a safe socialization plan. The AKC first-day article advises avoiding strange dogs and dog-trafficked places during this vulnerable period. Safe socialization can still include household sounds, gentle handling, car rides, and meeting healthy, known animals in settings your veterinarian approves.

Build a workable first-week routine

Puppies vary by age and individual capacity, so use a routine as a pattern rather than a rigid clock. Write down meals, water, naps, potty successes, accidents, medication, and unusual behavior. A simple log reveals when the puppy usually needs to go and prevents different household members from feeding twice.

Use frequent, predictable potty opportunities

Offer a trip after every meal, drink, nap, and energetic play session, plus regular opportunities while awake. Very young puppies may need more frequent trips than an older puppy. If accidents cluster at a particular time, shorten the interval and increase supervision before that window.

Protect sleep and teach calm

Alternate short play or training moments with naps. Reward lying quietly on a mat, entering the crate voluntarily, and releasing a toy. Avoid turning every wake-up into exciting attention; a calm household helps the puppy learn that rest is normal.

Introduce handling gradually

Briefly touch paws, ears, mouth, collar, and coat while offering tiny food rewards, stopping before the puppy struggles. These sessions prepare the dog for nail trims, brushing, and veterinary examinations. Never force a frightened puppy through handling.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Arrange veterinary care in the first days

Book a check-up promptly after arrival and bring every record supplied by the breeder, shelter, or rescue. The veterinarian will review previous vaccines, deworming, parasite prevention, weight, teeth, joints, diet, and any symptoms, then create a schedule suited to the puppy and your region. The AKC Pet Safety Handbook is a general safety reference, but it does not replace an examination or local veterinary advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask specifically about vaccine timing, parasite prevention, microchip registration, nutrition, safe exercise, socialization opportunities, dental care, and when to seek urgent help. Do not assume every puppy needs the same vaccine on the same date; previous doses, age, health, exposure, and local disease patterns change the plan.

How to choose between common options

Decision Compare Choose based on
Crate versus pen Sleep-space boundaries, movement room, cleaning, portability Whether the puppy can rest safely and whether you can supervise the area consistently.
Collar versus harness Fit, escape risk, rubbing, control during training The puppy’s body shape, walking behavior, and your veterinarian or trainer’s advice.
Outdoor potty versus pads Access, weather, household mobility, cleaning demands The route you can maintain consistently; one reliable location is clearer than many changing ones.
Soft versus rubber or food toys Chew resistance, size, seams, washability The individual puppy’s chewing behavior and your ability to supervise and inspect.
Washable versus disposable bedding Laundry capacity, chewing, accidents, replacement cost What stays safe and clean in your household, not the appearance of the product.

Problems new owners commonly encounter

The puppy will not eat

Stress can temporarily reduce appetite, but a puppy that refuses multiple meals, vomits, has diarrhea, seems weak, or cannot keep water down needs prompt veterinary advice. Bring the food history and note timing and symptoms.

The puppy cries in the crate

Check potty, temperature, thirst, pain, and whether the crate is too large or isolated. Practice short, positive crate sessions while you are nearby. Do not punish crying or repeatedly open the door during frantic behavior; ask your veterinarian or a qualified trainer for a plan if distress persists.

Chewing turns destructive

Reduce access, add a gate, increase supervised rest, and redirect to an appropriate chew. Remove damaged toys and inspect the mouth for injury. Swallowed fabric, plastic, foam, or toy parts warrants an immediate call to a veterinarian.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Potty accidents continue

Increase frequency, supervise more closely, revisit the route and reward timing, and clean odor thoroughly. Sudden changes in urination, straining, blood, diarrhea, or unusually frequent accidents require veterinary evaluation rather than harsher training.

A practical final check before bringing the puppy through the door

  • Hazards are secured and unsafe rooms are blocked.
  • The starter zone is assembled, washable, and near the people supervising.
  • Current food, bowls, water, bedding, identification, leash or harness, toys, and cleanup supplies are present.
  • Travel equipment and a towel are ready.
  • Health records and the first veterinary appointment are organized.
  • Every household member knows the potty location, feeding plan, supervision rules, and which objects are off-limits.
  • The first day has no unnecessary visitors or crowded outings.

Preparation is not about owning the most gear. It is about removing hazards, making the next correct behavior easy, and giving a young dog enough supervision, sleep, and veterinary support to settle safely.
