“10 British cat breeds” is best understood as an editorial list of cats associated with Britain, not a definitive set recognized under the same names by every cat registry. The selection below follows Catster’s ten entries, with notes on coat care, typical characteristics and naming where registry usage differs. A breed description is a general tendency, not a promise about an individual cat.

What counts as a British cat breed?

British can describe a breed developed in Britain, a cat associated with the country, or a breed listed by a British registry. Those categories do not always match. Catster’s selection includes ten cats, but that does not make every entry a separately recognized breed in every registry. FIFe’s breed listings include British Shorthair and British Longhair, Burmilla, Burmese, Manx, Cornish Rex and Devon Rex, among others; the GCCF also publishes information about recognized and unrecognized breeds. Check the naming and recognition rules of the registry relevant to you rather than assuming a universal classification.

Catster calls one entry “British Semi-Longhair”; GCCF and FIFe use “British Longhair.” GCCF says the name was officially recognized in 2017 and the breed received Championship status in November 2021. That is a GCCF milestone, not evidence that all registries use the same label or status.

10 British cat breeds and types

1. British Shorthair

The British Shorthair is known for a compact, sturdy frame, rounded features and a dense, plush short coat. Blue is a popular color, but it is not the only one. GCCF describes the British type as gently rounded and balanced, with a full chest, short strong legs and rounded paws. Catster characterizes the breed as calm, loving and independent; individual cats can differ.

2. British Semi-Longhair (British Longhair)

This is the longer-coated British type. The name “British Semi-Longhair” appears in Catster’s list, while GCCF and FIFe use “British Longhair.” Its fuller coat means more upkeep than a British Shorthair’s: GCCF recommends daily grooming for British Longhairs, compared with grooming British Shorthairs when they are moulting. A suitable cat grooming brush can help with routine coat care.

3. Scottish Fold

The Scottish Fold is identified by its folded ears. Catster traces the trait to a mutation noticed in Scotland in 1961. The name appears in the article’s British-associated selection, but that inclusion should not be read as a claim of universal registry recognition. The sources cited here do not establish current authoritative veterinary guidance on breeding or welfare, so this overview does not make health or breeding recommendations.

4. Scottish Straight

The Scottish Straight is presented by Catster as the straight-eared counterpart to the Scottish Fold. Naming and recognition can vary among associations, so it is more accurate to treat it as a type included in this editorial list than to imply that every registry classifies it identically.

5. Cornish Rex

The Cornish Rex has a short, dense, silky coat with a wave or curl. Catster recounts its beginnings with a curly-coated kitten born in Cornwall in 1950. GCCF describes Cornish Rex cats as sociable, affectionate and playful. Its breed guide gives a lifespan figure of 16 years; that is a registry-published guide figure, not a prediction for any individual cat.

6. Devon Rex

The Devon Rex is a separate breed from the Cornish Rex, even though both have short, wavy or curly coats. Catster gives the Devon’s origin story as beginning in 1959. GCCF describes its coat as short, soft and wavy, and its temperament as intelligent, mischievous and highly active. GCCF’s guide lists a lifespan of 12–16 years, which should be read as a general breed-guide figure rather than a guarantee.

7. Chinchilla

“Chinchilla” can refer to a Persian type or to a coat variety, often silver or golden, depending on how the term is being used. Catster includes it as an entry, but the registry pages consulted do not establish a universal standalone breed status. When researching a cat described as a Chinchilla, ask whether the term refers to a recognized breed, a Persian type or coat coloration.

8. Burmilla

The Burmilla is listed by Catster, FIFe and CFA. CFA describes a sparkling silver coat with dark lining around the eyes, nose and lips, and a sociable, playful and affectionate personality. Those traits are a registry’s general description, not a guarantee of an individual cat’s behavior.

9. Oriental

Catster says Orientals were bred in the UK in the 1950s to create a Siamese-type cat without the traditional color markings. That history is attributed here to Catster; it was not independently confirmed in a primary registry source among the references used for this overview. Oriental is included as a British-associated entry in Catster’s list, not as a statement that all registries classify it as British.

How to compare these cats

Rather than looking for a single “best” British breed, consider the practical differences that affect daily life. The registry profiles are useful starting points, but a specific cat’s needs and personality matter more than a broad breed tendency.

  • Coat and grooming: British Longhairs need daily grooming according to GCCF; British Shorthairs need grooming when moulting. Cornish Rex and Devon Rex coats are short and wavy, while the Chinchilla label may describe a type or coloration rather than a separate breed.
  • Activity and play: GCCF characterizes Devon Rex cats as highly active and Cornish Rex cats as playful and sociable. Treat those as tendencies, not guarantees.
  • Sociability and independence: Catster describes British Shorthairs as independent, while CFA describes Burmillas as sociable and playful. The descriptions can help frame questions, but they cannot determine how an individual cat will behave.
  • Recognition and naming: Verify the relevant registry’s current terminology, especially for British Longhair/Semi-Longhair, Scottish Straight and Chinchilla. A name used in an article or by a breeder may not map neatly to a recognized breed category.

GCCF’s guide lists British cats at 14–20 years and Burmese cats at 10–17 years; these are the guide’s published breed figures, not lifespan promises. The Burmese figure is included here because it appears among FIFe’s listings and in the GCCF lifespan data, not because Burmese is one of Catster’s ten entries.
