There is no evidence-based universal “best” food for every British Shorthair. Choose a complete food suited to your cat’s life stage, then tailor portions to body condition, activity, health, appetite, and tolerance. The sources available do not establish independent product ratings or a tested winner; Royal Canin British Shorthair Adult is one manufacturer-described option for adult cats, not a comparative recommendation.
What should you feed a British Shorthair?
Start with a complete food labeled for your cat’s life stage. Then consider the individual cat: body condition, activity level, health, appetite, and how well the food is tolerated. A breed name or ingredient list alone cannot establish that a food is the right choice.

Kittens and growing cats
Kittens have different nutrient needs from adults. Royal Canin’s breed guidance describes adult food as appropriate after development around 12 months; check the product’s life-stage label and ask your veterinarian if you are unsure when to transition.

Adults
For an adult cat, look for a food presented as complete for adult maintenance. Wet, dry, or a combination can be considered according to the cat’s needs and your ability to measure total portions. The label should match the intended life stage.

Cats with health or weight concerns
Food for a medical condition or a significant weight concern should be chosen with veterinary guidance. Royal Canin says its breed advice is for healthy animals and directs owners of cats with health problems to a veterinarian. WSAVA recommends nutritional screening as part of patient care, with extended assessment when risk factors are found.
How to assess a food beyond its name
- Life-stage suitability: Check whether the food is intended for growth, adult maintenance, or a specific veterinary-directed need.
- Nutritional adequacy and transparency: Look for a clear statement that the food is complete for its intended stage and for reliable information about the food and its manufacturer. WSAVA cautions that ingredient lists can mislead when used as a stand-alone measure of overall quality.
- Individual fit: Consider body condition, activity, health, appetite, and tolerance. Seek veterinary input when health or weight is a concern.
- Feeding practicality: Choose a format you can serve consistently and portion accurately, while confirming local availability. Breed targeting or kibble shape does not by itself prove better health outcomes.
WSAVA provides nutrition resources, including body-condition scoring and tools for selecting a food. Its nutritional assessment guidelines call for screening every patient and a closer assessment when factors such as abnormal body condition, age, muscle loss, an atypical diet, medical conditions, or appetite changes are present.

Why portions and body condition matter
British Shorthairs can gain weight easily, according to Royal Canin’s breed guidance. The guidance recommends small measured meals, play, and limiting treats. Portion needs still differ by cat: Royal Canin’s product feeding information says amounts should be adjusted for body condition and other individual factors.
WSAVA’s 2011 Nutritional Assessment Guidelines Task Force says, “The goal for most pets is a BCS of 4 to 5 of 9…. Disease risk associations in adult animals appear to increase above a BCS of 6 of 9.” A body-condition score is a screening aid, not an individual calorie prescription; ask a veterinarian to assess your cat if weight or appetite is changing.
