Before you start: is this safe to clean at home?
Home cleanup is most appropriate when there is only a little fresh stool on the fur and your cat otherwise seems comfortable. Look first for signs that the problem is more than a dirty coat:

- Check the mess and your cat. If it is a small, superficial smear on the fur and your cat seems well, you can try gentle cleanup. If you see swelling, blood, discharge, pain, extensive matting, or a large amount of dried stool, stop and call your veterinarian.
- Prepare a calm, warm spot. Set out a soft cloth and lukewarm water before handling your cat. A towel under your cat can help keep the surface secure. A full bath is unnecessary for a small spot.

What to use—and what to avoid
A soft cloth and lukewarm water are a simple choice for a small amount of fresh residue. Wipes are not automatically suitable just because they are made for babies or pets: the sources do not establish that every scented, medicated, baby, or pet wipe is appropriate for cleaning around a cat’s anus. Diarrhea in cats can have causes ranging from minor to serious. Cornell recommends contacting a veterinarian as soon as possible when diarrhea lasts longer than a day or two and is accompanied by poor appetite, lethargy, or vomiting.
