A suspected broken jaw needs prompt veterinary assessment. Facial trauma can involve life-threatening injuries elsewhere in the body, so a veterinarian must assess the whole cat before deciding how to treat the jaw. Signs such as mouth bleeding, difficulty eating, jaw misalignment or a persistently open mouth warrant urgent care, but they cannot confirm a fracture on their own.

When a cat may have a broken jaw

Jaw fractures commonly follow trauma, including vehicle accidents. They can also occur after falls, bites or gunshot injuries. A cat may show one or more of these signs:

  • Reluctance or inability to eat
  • Blood in the mouth or blood-tinged or excessive saliva
  • A jaw that appears misaligned, or wounds around the mouth
  • Pain or swelling around the face
  • A persistently open-mouth posture

These signs are reasons to seek veterinary care, not a home diagnostic checklist. Injuries to the chest, eyes, nervous system or other parts of the body may accompany facial trauma. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) emphasizes: “It is very important to assess the whole body first as these other injuries could be life threatening.” ACVS owner guidance on mandibular fractures

How a veterinarian diagnoses a jaw fracture

Whole-body assessment comes first

The veterinary team will address urgent problems and examine the cat, including the head and mouth. They may need sedation or anesthesia to examine the jaw safely and thoroughly. The assessment also considers neurological and eye status, as well as other injuries from the trauma.

Imaging confirms the injury and helps plan care

Radiographs, often taken from multiple views, can confirm a fracture and guide treatment. Some injuries—particularly those toward the back of the lower jaw, the upper jaw or the temporomandibular joint—can be difficult to assess by touch. Overlapping structures can also make radiographs harder to interpret. CT may help define complex skull injuries and plan surgery when it is available. The choice of imaging depends on the examination and the injuries suspected. Rizkallal and Lafuente’s 2020 review of feline skull injuries; ACVS guidance

How veterinarians choose a treatment

There is no single repair method for every cat. The aim is to restore comfortable oral function and correct tooth occlusion—the way the upper and lower teeth meet. A veterinarian weighs the fracture’s location and pattern alongside the cat’s overall condition.

Conservative management

Some closed, stable fractures may be managed without surgery when the cat has normal tooth alignment, little or no pain, and normal oral function. This is a veterinarian’s case-specific decision, not a reason to leave a suspected fracture unevaluated. The 2020 review

Stabilization or surgery

Deviation of the jaw, abnormal tooth alignment, an open fracture, instability, multiple fragments or impaired oral function can favor stabilization or surgery. Depending on the fracture, veterinary teams may use wiring between teeth or between jaw segments, intraoral splints or dental acrylic, plates and screws, or external skeletal fixation. Each method has different practical considerations; the choice and placement belong to the treating veterinary team. Preserving correct tooth occlusion is central to the repair. Feeding, healing and follow-up

Nutrition is part of fracture care, and the feeding plan depends on the injury and the fixation used. Some cats can eat soft food while the jaw is stabilized; others need a feeding tube to support nutrition and, in some cases, medication administration. Ask the treating veterinarian whether oral feeding is appropriate and what texture and plan to use. Merck Veterinary Manual; ACVS

Follow-up lets the veterinary team monitor healing, tooth alignment and the condition of any fixation. ACVS identifies possible complications including malocclusion, infection, delayed or incomplete healing, and failure of bone healing. The team may also direct activity restrictions to avoid stressing the fracture. Do not adjust or remove fixation or change prescribed medication without veterinary direction.

What one small study can—and cannot—tell you

In a 2025 retrospective referral-centre series of 15 cats treated with wire-reinforced intraoral composite splints, 14 of 15 had normal tooth occlusion, two of 15 (13%) had major complications associated with soft-tissue ulceration, and median radiographic bone-healing time was eight weeks. These results describe that specific technique in a small group; they are not a general success rate or recovery timetable for all jaw fractures. Pakula, Freeman and Perry, 2025

A separate 2017 retrospective study described 23 cats treated at one clinic between 2008 and 2015. It covered different fracture locations and repairs, and reported reversible gingivitis in eight cats with acrylic resin on teeth. Its single-clinic design and older case period limit how broadly its findings apply. Hellenic Journal of Companion Animal Medicine, 2017

Can jaw fractures in cats be prevented?

The clinical sources describe trauma mechanisms such as vehicle accidents, falls from height, bites and gunshot injuries, but they do not establish the effectiveness of specific owner-level measures for preventing jaw fractures. Reducing a cat’s exposure to traumatic hazards is a general safety aim, not a fracture-prevention method proven by the cited evidence. 2020 review; ACVS guidance
