That support need not mean writing a check. You might donate supplies to a local animal shelter, take a volunteer shift, share a cause’s message, or help a neighbor care for a pet.
What GivingTuesday means beyond one day
GivingTuesday began as a single day of giving and describes itself as a year-round global generosity movement. The organization says more than 110 country leaders and thousands of community leaders collaborate throughout the year. Its idea of generosity includes financial contributions, donated goods, volunteering, advocacy, and everyday acts of kindness—not only fundraising.
That wider definition offers a useful way for animal lovers to take part. Some actions support animal-welfare organizations; others help a person or animal directly. The Associated Press notes that volunteering and helping are not limited to nonprofit settings. GivingTuesday’s overview of the movement describes its year-round approach.
What the 2025 numbers do—and don’t—show
GivingTuesday estimated that 38.1 million people in the United States participated on GivingTuesday 2025 and that $4.0 billion was donated that day. Its event estimates also included 19.1 million people making financial contributions, 13.5 million giving goods, 11.1 million volunteering, and 20.9 million speaking out about causes. These are event-day estimates assembled from partners, not totals for all generosity over the year; the Associated Press says the estimate excludes corporate and foundation donations because it focuses on individuals’ everyday generosity. GivingTuesday’s 2025 State of Generosity survey found that 84.6% of respondents globally reported some form of giving during 2025: 64.1% reported giving money, 74.0% giving items, 55.8% volunteering, and 55.5% advocacy. The survey had 7,013 respondents in 2025, compared with 7,006 in 2024. These are survey responses, not administrative counts of every person in each country. GivingTuesday cautions that people tend to recall more giving when asked about the past year than when asked about the past week, so annual recall results should not be treated as directly interchangeable with its weekly GivingPulse measure.
For the United States, the survey reports 79.4% giving in any form in 2025 and year-over-year reported increases of 5.3 percentage points for any form, 7.8 for money, 6.2 for items, 9.0 for volunteering, and 8.8 for advocacy. GivingTuesday’s overall interpretation, accounting for the difference between annual recall and weekly measurement, is that US generosity rose 2–5%, largely through items, advocacy, and volunteering. Read those as survey-based findings and the organization’s interpretation, not a headcount of all US givers. The State of Generosity report provides the survey context.

Choose a way to support animals that fits your capacity
There is no single required form of participation. Pick an action that matches what you can offer now; a small, feasible contribution is more practical to revisit than a commitment that strains your time or budget.

Donating to a registered nonprofit and helping informally are different routes; not every organization or contribution has the same tax treatment. Don’t assume a donation is tax-deductible without checking the applicable details. GivingTuesday’s data ecosystem lists donation platforms among its contributors, but a platform is simply one possible way to give—not a requirement for year-round generosity. Make the action repeatable, not burdensome
- Choose a cause or community. You might focus on shelter animals, pet owners facing a temporary challenge, or another animal-welfare concern that matters to you.
- Select one feasible form of support. Decide whether money, goods, time, advocacy, or direct community help best fits your current circumstances.
- Set a cadence you can manage. That could mean revisiting the choice monthly, volunteering when your schedule allows, or checking in with a local organization when you have supplies to share. This is a practical suggestion, not a behavior-change method tested by the sources.
- Reassess when circumstances change. If your budget, schedule, or local needs shift, change the form or frequency rather than treating generosity as an all-or-nothing commitment.
GivingTuesday CEO Asha Curran describes individual acts as building blocks for community solutions. For animal lovers, the useful takeaway is not that every act must be large or public, but that there are several ways to contribute—and that support can be adapted to the needs around you and the capacity you have.
