In a September 15, 2026 interview with Catster, Dan C. Harberts explains how the park approaches those decisions: offer clear choices, respect the family’s wishes, and honor the relationship that made the pet part of the family.
The park says it has operated since 1971 and that more than 20,000 pets are permanently laid to rest there. That figure is reported in the interview rather than independently audited. Its grounds, gardens, register, certificates, online tributes, and keepsake options are designed to give families a place and a ritual for remembering a companion after death.

What Bubbling Well Pet Memorial Park is
Bubbling Well is a pet cemetery and aftercare provider in Napa serving Northern California’s greater Bay Area, according to the park. Its services include cremation, burial, and memorial products. Families generally make arrangements through participating local veterinary clinics, and the park says the typical cremation process, including pickup and return arrangements, takes about one week. Service area and timing can change, so a clinic or the park should confirm the current details when a pet dies.
The setting is intended to be more than a place where remains are handled. The park maintains gardens and memorial features where people can visit, reflect, or leave a pet’s memory. The official tour describes several named gardens, including the St. Francis of Assisi Garden, and a memorial-register monument covering Country Burials from 1971 through 2022.

- Follow industry sizing rule: ~1 cu in matches 1lb pet weight for sizing reference. 3 sizes for all pets: · Small (70 cu in): Cats, toy breeds & pets under 50 lbs · Medium (100 cu in): Pets 50–80 lbs, medium dogs · Large (138 cu in): Large dogs 80–120 lbs, extra room for collars, fur & keepsakes ⚠️ Reminder: Pets near the upper weight limit fit tight with little spare space. Pets at the lower end leave empty gaps, fill with your pet’s mementos. To avoid big empty space, skip sizes where your pet’s weight sits at the bottom range. Unsure of fit? Harberts frames that work in emotional rather than transactional terms. “The relationships with our pets are as meaningful as it gets. And I honor those relationships,” he told Catster. That perspective explains why the park presents aftercare as a set of personal choices instead of a single recommended package.
How the park’s aftercare choices differ
Bubbling Well describes three principal disposition paths. The practical differences are whether the pet is cremated alone or with other pets, whether cremains come back to the family, and what kind of place or keepsake remains afterward.
| Service | How the pet is handled | What the family receives or can visit | Memorial elements described by Bubbling Well |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private cremation | The pet is alone in the cremation chamber. | Cremains are returned, with a certificate and one of several urn options. | An urn, certificate, optional engraving or specialty products, and other memorial choices. |
| Communal cremation | The pet is cremated with other pets without separation. | Cremains are not returned to the owner. | A representative amount is scattered in the park’s gardens, providing a place to remember the pet. |
| Private burial | The pet is buried in an individual cemetery service rather than cremated. | The family has a gravesite or park memorial setting. | Burial, visitation, and the park’s cemetery grounds and register. |
Private cremation
In Bubbling Well’s description, private cremation means the pet is alone in the chamber. The service includes a certificate and one of several urn options, and the cremains are returned to the family. That makes it the option to ask about when keeping the cremains at home, placing them in a chosen urn, or dividing them among family members is important.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The word “private” describes the cremation procedure, not a promise that every provider uses the same process. Families should have the clinic or park explain identification, paperwork, the urn choices included, and how the cremains will be returned. Bubbling Well’s FAQ says each pet in its individual and VIP services receives a specific cremation number that remains with the pet through the process.
Communal cremation
Communal cremation places the pet in the crematory with other pets, without separation. Because the cremains are not separated, they are not returned to the owner. Bubbling Well says it scatters a representative amount in its gardens. Families therefore have a physical place at the park to remember the pet even though they do not receive an urn.

This can suit someone who does not want to keep cremains at home or who prefers a garden memorial. It is important to ask about this choice before authorizing cremation, because the return-of-cremains decision cannot be reversed after a communal process.
Private burial
Private burial offers a traditional cemetery setting. Bubbling Well provides private burial and memorial services alongside cremation. A burial can give family members a specific gravesite to visit, while the park’s gardens and register provide a broader memorial environment.

Local rules, property restrictions, environmental requirements, and future property ownership can differ, so anyone considering it should check the applicable local authorities and property documents before proceeding.
What usually happens after a pet dies
The exact sequence depends on the service selected and whether a veterinary clinic is coordinating it, but the park’s published information supports this practical outline.
- Start with the veterinary clinic or park. Bubbling Well says participating local veterinary clinics can arrange pickup and return. Confirm whether the clinic serves your location and who will answer questions about timing.
- Choose cremation or burial. Decide whether you want the pet cremated alone, cremated communally, or privately buried. Ask what is included in the selected service and what costs, products, or visitation arrangements are separate; current prices are not stated in the available information.
- Confirm identification. For individual and VIP services, the park says a specific cremation number stays with the pet through the process. Ask how that number appears on the paperwork and certificate.
- Set expectations for timing. The park’s FAQ gives approximately one week as the typical process time. This is a provider estimate, not a universal timetable, and transportation or clinic schedules can affect it.
- Arrange return, pickup, or a garden memorial. With private cremation, confirm how and where the cremains and certificate will be returned. With communal cremation, ask which garden receives the representative scattering and whether the family can visit.
- Choose memorial details. Families can discuss urns, specialty products, laser engraving, burial, an online tribute, or a card in the park’s memorial register.
Writing down these decisions can help when several relatives are involved. It also prevents a family from assuming that a private cremation, an urn, a return appointment, or a garden scattering is included in every service.

Ways families can memorialize a pet
Online tribute
Harberts describes the online tribute as a way to memorialize a pet with words and a photograph. The feature he discusses also includes a personalized certificate and a card in the park’s memorial register. A short tribute can record a pet’s habits, nicknames, and the people or animals who shared its life; a longer one can preserve a fuller story for children and relatives who were not present at the time of death.

Urns and specialty products
The park’s service information says private cremation includes one of several urn options, and its homepage lists urns and specialty products. Families can ask which designs are included, whether an upgrade is available, and whether an urn can be engraved. Laser engraving is among the memorial choices identified in the park’s materials. If a family already owns a container, it should confirm whether the provider can transfer the cremains into it and what handling requirements apply.
Burial and visitation
A private burial creates a fixed place to visit. Cremation does not eliminate that possibility: communal cremains are represented in the park’s gardens, and private-cremation families can choose to visit the grounds or create a separate memorial. Ask about current visitation arrangements, any scheduling requirements, and which garden or register feature applies to the service selected.
The memorial register and gardens
The park’s tour identifies a memorial-register monument for Country Burials from 1971 through 2022. Its gardens, including the St. Francis of Assisi Garden, provide a setting for scattering and remembrance. These details matter for families who want the pet’s name connected to a public place rather than kept only in a home urn or digital file.

Pet loss can make even straightforward choices feel overwhelming. Harberts says the park’s role is to explain options without directing a family toward one outcome: “We don’t try to steer them one way or another. It’s a vulnerable time for them; we can give them options.”

That approach recognizes that a family may want very different things. One person may need cremains returned so the pet can remain at home. Another may prefer a garden scattering or gravesite. A communal service may feel right for someone who wants a place to visit without taking cremains home. None of those choices measures the depth of the relationship.
Harberts puts that sincerity plainly: “Everybody says, ‘My cat was the best cat ever, my dog was the best dog ever.’ That sincerity and that love from these dogs and cats — pets in general — is one of the highest forms of love.” The point is not to rank services, but to make a decision that fits the family’s beliefs, practical circumstances, and way of grieving.
Questions to ask before authorizing care
- Is the service private cremation, communal cremation, or private burial?
- If cremation is private, how is the pet identified from pickup through return?
- What does the specific cremation number mean, and where will it appear on the paperwork?
- Which urn and certificate are included, and what engraving or specialty products are available?
- If cremation is communal, where is the representative scattering made and can the family visit?
- What is the current expected timeline for pickup, cremation, and return?
- Does the participating veterinary clinic serve your city, and who coordinates transportation?
- Can the family submit a photograph and wording for an online tribute?
- How are the personalized certificate and memorial-register card handled?
- What are the current visitation rules for the gardens, burial areas, and register?
- If considering home burial, which local legal, property, or environmental requirements apply?
Because the park’s service area, timing, products, and procedures are provider-specific, confirm the current details directly rather than relying on a description from an older conversation or a different crematory.
A place for remembrance, not a single prescribed ritual
Bubbling Well’s model combines practical aftercare with tangible places to remember a pet. A private cremation can return cremains in an urn; a communal cremation can connect the pet to the park’s gardens; a burial can establish a gravesite. Online words, photographs, certificates, engraving, the register, and the named gardens extend that remembrance beyond the day of death.
