Start with the space and predator protection you already have, then add a few sturdy features that suit your flock and leave clear routes for birds to move and land.
Plan around the run and your flock
First check the enclosure: the playground must not weaken the run’s security, block access to food or water, or make routine cleaning harder. Within the available space, identify a dry place for dust-bathing and scratching, plus enough open floor for birds to move between low structures without crowding.
Choose features for the birds that will use them. Age, body size, mobility, flight ability, flock dynamics, and available space all affect what is reachable and safe. UK government welfare guidance recommends carefully designing and locating perches, tiers, and ramps to prevent collisions and falls, and warns against structures too high for birds to use comfortably. It does not set one universal backyard-playground height or layout.
- Leave clear access to food and water.
- Provide clear landing space around perches and platforms.
- Use stable structures with no sharp edges, splinters, or exposed fasteners.
- Check that every bird can reach useful features, including birds lower in the pecking order.
Choose a mix of enrichment
Different features support different behaviours. A perch does not replace a dust bath, and a pecking object does not provide the same opportunity as loose material for scratching. UK government guidance lists straw or shaving bales, perches, platforms, pecking objects, and dust-bathing boxes as examples of enrichment.

- Durable Steel Structure: The metal chicken coop uses a high-quality steel pipe frame, coupled with galvanized technology, so that it does not have to worry about rust in the outdoors. The steel pipe has a diameter of 25 mm, so that the chicken coop can remain stable even in the wind and rain.
- PVC Coated Wire Mesh: The wall of the chicken coop is made of PVC coated hexagonal wire mesh and that is strong enough to last. The small gaps between the nets are both effective in protecting the chickens from some predators and providing maximum ventilation.
- Protective Cover: The large outdoor chicken pen is covered with a sunscreen and waterproof PE material roof, ensuring adequate protection against sunlight, rain, or snow. The canopy frame with a spire roof design can perfectly drain rainwater, snow, or debris, making it impossible to accumulate.
- Multifunctional Chicken Coop: Our metal coop is suitable for various small and medium-sized animals, such as rabbits, ducks, cats, dogs and birds. This metal coop provides sufficient space for small animals to enjoy playing and resting.
- Easy installation: The installation of our chicken house is very convenient, requiring only two people to complete the installation, and is equipped with instructions and accessories. Simple and professional guidance can save customers a lot of time.
| Feature | Behaviour supported | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Perch or low platform | Perching and resting | Make it sturdy and easy to reach, with room to land and move away. |
| Loose, suitable material or a low barrier | Scratching and movement | Keep it clean and arranged so it does not obstruct the run or create a difficult obstacle. |
| Pecking object | Pecking and activity | Choose something stable and suitable for the birds; check for damage. |
| Dust-bathing area | Dust-bathing | Keep it dry, accessible, and easy to maintain. |
Environmental enrichment can support normal activity and foraging and offer birds opportunities to escape confrontation or find refuge. UK government guidance says: “Environmental enrichment can improve bird health and welfare during rearing and in lay, by reducing disturbances, aggression, injurious pecking, fear responses and stress.” That is a welfare aim, not a guarantee that a particular playground feature will prevent aggression or injury.
Make perches useful without making them risky
Chickens have a natural desire to roost. Extension guidance notes that perches provide resting places and may help lower-ranking birds avoid some pecking, but awkward flight and misjudged landings can increase injury risk.

Give birds a safe way up and down and clear space to land. Avoid unstable supports, sharp edges, large jumps between levels, and layouts that funnel birds into one another. Keep heights conservative for the birds using them—especially young, heavy-bodied, or inexperienced birds. This is a cautious application of welfare guidance, not a tested height recommendation.
There is no single numerical perch height that fits every backyard flock. Choose based on the birds’ ability and the run’s layout, then observe how they use it.

Provide a dry place to scratch and dust-bathe
Set aside an accessible area with dry, loose material for dust-bathing. Chickens perform dust-bathing motions even when they cannot reach a dust bath, which makes a suitable area a meaningful enrichment feature rather than decoration.
A dust bath is not a stand-alone fix for feather pecking, parasites, or other flock problems. If you see ongoing pecking or signs of illness, address those concerns separately rather than expecting one feature to resolve them.

- Durable, Weather-Resistant & Space-Saving:Constructed with thickened iron pipes, galvanized wire mesh, and anti-rust coating for long-lasting protection. High-quality PE roof blocks sunlight, rain, snow, and UV rays. Compact footprint fits smaller backyards while keeping your flock safe and comfortable.
Keep the enclosure secure and the equipment sound
Predator protection is part of playground design: new structures should not create reach-through openings or compromise doors, edges, or other vulnerable parts of the run. UMN Extension’s mobile-hut guide notes that openings in chicken wire can be large enough for some ground predators to reach through; its example uses hardware cloth on the lower part of the hut. That is an example construction choice, not a complete predator-proofing specification. Adapt protection to local predators and the actual enclosure.
Choose sturdy, cleanable materials for perches and platforms. Welfare guidance calls for comfortable perch surfaces and suitable support for birds’ feet; inspect wood and other materials for splinters, exposed fasteners, loose parts, or damage. Remove material that becomes contaminated or unsafe.

Observe, clean, and adjust
After adding a feature, watch whether birds use it and whether it causes crowding, conflict, or difficult landings. Keep food and water routes clear, clean and inspect the structures, and remove damaged or contaminated material. If a feature is ignored or makes access harder for some birds, move or change it rather than adding more equipment. The guidance does not establish a universal inspection schedule, so make checks part of your regular run care.
