Bunny’s Vitamin D Emergency: What Dog Owners Should Know About Supplement Poisoning

A 2017 ASPCA case involving Bunny, a Coton de Tulear dog, shows why a pet that may have swallowed human vitamin D supplements needs prompt professional advice even when the animal initially seems only mildly ill. Her guardian found a chewed supplement bottle, connected it with lethargy, vomiting, increased thirst and increased urination, and called the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC). The APCC directed him to an emergency clinic, and ASPCA later reported that Bunny recovered after several weeks of veterinary hospitalization and follow-up care.

The practical lesson is simple: do not wait for symptoms after a suspected vitamin D ingestion. Call a veterinarian or an animal poison-control service immediately, provide the product information and amount that may be missing, and follow the instructions you receive. The original account, “A Tale of Caution: Bunny and the Sunshine Vitamin”, was published May 9, 2017, and is a historical case report rather than a current dosing guide.

What happened to Bunny?

Bunny was a Coton de Tulear, not a rabbit. According to ASPCA’s account, her guardian discovered that she had gotten into his bottle of vitamin D supplements. The bottle could have contained as many as 99 tablets, with each tablet labeled 10,000 international units (IU). He also noticed that Bunny was showing concerning signs, including lethargy, vomiting, increased thirst and increased urination.

After finding the chewed bottle and linking it to her condition, Bunny’s guardian called the APCC. The poison-control professionals told him to take her to an emergency clinic rather than monitor her at home. ASPCA says treatment was available and that Bunny ultimately did well after several weeks in veterinary hospitals and additional follow-up care. The account does not publish her medication schedule, procedures, laboratory values or other treatment details, so it should not be used as a home-treatment protocol.

Bunny’s guardian, identified as David in the ASPCA article, described the importance of the advice he received: “This single bit of advice most likely saved Bunny’s life.” He also said, “The professionals at the ASPCA definitely saved Bunny’s life by directing her treatment.” Those are his reflections on Bunny’s individual emergency, not a controlled study or a promise about the outcome of another exposure.

Why can a large vitamin D ingestion be dangerous?

ASPCA explains that a large vitamin D dose can raise calcium and phosphorus levels in a pet’s body. The resulting mineral imbalance can lead to mineralization, in which minerals deposit in tissues. The article specifically warns about effects involving blood vessels and kidneys. That is why a supplement bottle belongs in the same emergency conversation as other potentially hazardous medications, even though vitamin D is a nutrient in normal amounts.

The case report does not establish a universal toxic dose for every dog. Risk depends on details that are not interchangeable from one animal or product to another, including the animal’s size and health, the exact formulation, the number of tablets missing and whether other ingredients are present. Bunny’s possible exposure is therefore a case-specific figure, not a safe-versus-unsafe threshold for your pet.

How much did Bunny possibly swallow?

Detail What ASPCA reported How to interpret it
Animal Bunny, a Coton de Tulear dog This was one individual dog’s incident.
Product Her guardian’s vitamin D supplement The account does not identify a brand or provide a complete ingredient panel.
Possible amount Up to 99 tablets “Up to” indicates the maximum suspected amount in this report, not a confirmed measured ingestion.
Strength printed in the account 10,000 IU per tablet This was the labeled strength of Bunny’s tablets in the 2017 case.
Clinical result Recovery after several weeks of veterinary hospitalization and follow-up ASPCA does not disclose the treatment regimen or claim that every exposure will resolve the same way.

Do not use the number of tablets in this table to calculate a dose for another dog. If a bottle has been chewed, count what remains only if you can do so safely, keep the container and label, and tell the veterinarian or poison-control professional exactly what you know and what remains uncertain.

What signs might appear, and when?

The ASPCA account lists lethargy, vomiting, increased thirst and increased urination among the signs that may be noticed after a vitamin D overdose. It says signs can take anywhere from 12 hours to four days to appear. A pet can therefore look normal immediately after getting into a bottle and still need urgent advice.

Possible sign mentioned by ASPCA What a guardian may notice
Lethargy Unusual tiredness, weakness or reduced interest in normal activity
Vomiting One or more episodes of bringing up stomach contents
Increased thirst Drinking more often or emptying the water bowl unusually quickly
Increased urination More frequent urination or noticeably larger volumes

These signs are not a reliable way to decide whether an exposure is serious. They can have many causes, and the delayed timeline means waiting for them can waste valuable time. A suspected ingestion is the reason to call; visible illness is not a prerequisite.

What should you do if your dog may have eaten vitamin D?

  1. Move your pet away from the container. Prevent further access without putting your hands near a frightened or nauseated animal’s mouth.
  2. Call immediately. Contact your local veterinarian, an emergency veterinary clinic or an animal poison-control service. ASPCA’s 2017 account printed the APCC number as (888) 426-4435; verify the current number and availability when you need it because contact information can change.
  3. Keep the packaging. Have the bottle, label, tablet strength, ingredient list and any package insert available. Tell the professional when the exposure may have happened and whether the bottle was chewed, spilled or found empty.
  4. Estimate without guessing. If possible, note how many tablets were originally in the bottle and how many remain. If you cannot determine the amount, say so; an uncertain estimate is more useful than an invented precise number.
  5. Report the animal’s details. Give the pet’s species, breed, age, approximate weight, medical conditions, current medications and any signs you have observed. Mention other substances that could have been swallowed.
  6. Follow the professional’s direction about travel. In Bunny’s case, APCC directed her guardian to an emergency clinic. If you are told to go, take the product container and any relevant records with you.
  7. Do not improvise treatment. The ASPCA case account does not provide instructions for inducing vomiting, giving food, administering a home remedy or changing medication. Perform only the steps a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically recommends.

If your pet is unconscious, having trouble breathing, collapsing or having seizures, treat that as an immediate emergency and seek veterinary help while making the call. Keep the phone conversation focused on getting professional instructions rather than trying to diagnose the exposure yourself.

What can veterinary care involve?

The source confirms that treatment is available, but it intentionally does not describe Bunny’s regimen. A veterinary team may need to assess the exposure, monitor the animal and manage effects on calcium, phosphorus, hydration and organs; the exact plan depends on the patient and the product. Because those decisions require examination and testing, a case account cannot substitute for an individualized veterinary plan.

ASPCA reported that Bunny spent several weeks in veterinary hospitals and then received follow-up care before she was doing well. The length of her recovery illustrates that a serious ingestion can require sustained monitoring rather than a single visit. It does not establish a standard hospitalization time for another pet.

How can you prevent a repeat exposure?

ASPCA’s prevention advice is to keep medications and supplements out of pets’ reach. “Out of reach” should mean inaccessible during ordinary household activity, not merely pushed to the back of a counter that a determined dog can reach. Use a closed cabinet, secured drawer or another storage arrangement appropriate to your pet’s abilities.

A lockable medicine-storage box can be one household aid, but ASPCA does not name, test or endorse a particular product, and no container should be called pet-proof without evidence for that specific design. Check that the lid closes fully, the box cannot be knocked down, and every family member returns supplements after use.

  • Store vitamin products and prescription or over-the-counter medicines separately from treats and food.
  • Keep bottles closed while you are taking tablets; do not leave a weekly organizer open on a table.
  • Dispose of dropped tablets immediately and look under furniture before allowing pets back into the area.
  • Tell visitors and children not to share human supplements with animals.
  • Save the original label so the active ingredients and strength are available during an emergency.

What this case does—and does not—tell dog owners

Bunny’s story is useful because it connects a real household mistake with a clear response: recognize the possible ingestion, call promptly and follow emergency-clinic guidance. It also demonstrates why a quiet interval is not reassurance when ASPCA says signs may be delayed from 12 hours to four days.

At the same time, the report has a narrow scope. It describes one dog, one supplement bottle and one outcome in an article published in 2017. It is not a population study, a current toxicology monograph, a dosing chart or a comparison of treatment options. The account says the APCC handles thousands of accidental-ingestion calls involving guardians’ medications or supplements each year, but it does not give an exact annual number.

For current emergency contact details, confirm the number for the service available in your region before an incident occurs. When a suspected vitamin D ingestion happens, use the veterinarian or poison-control service as the source of case-specific instructions, and do not wait for the first symptom to appear.
