Burmese cats do not have one universal color list. The often-quoted “four colors” refers to the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) American Burmese standard: sable, champagne, blue, and platinum. Other registries classify more colors and tortoiseshell combinations. The safest way to identify a Burmese color is therefore to name the registry standard being used, the cat’s age, and whether the coat is solid or tortoiseshell.
These categories come from breed registries and their written standards, not veterinary examinations. A photograph can show a cat’s apparent shade, but it cannot prove breed, pedigree, or registration status.

What colors do Burmese cats come in?
Under the CFA American Burmese standard, four colors are accepted:

|---|---|---|
| Sable | Rich, warm sable brown | Deep brown overall, usually the darkest of the four |
| Champagne | Warm honey beige, with a pale gold-tan underside | Light beige to honey, with a softer lower body |
| Blue | Medium blue with warm fawn undertones | Muted blue-gray rather than a cold steel gray |
| Platinum | Pale silvery gray with pale fawn undertones | Very light silver-gray with a warm cast |
CFA calls for an overall even coat with subtly lighter underparts and does not accept additional colors under this particular American Burmese standard. The descriptions above are CFA terminology; they should not be treated as a universal definition used by every registry.

Why “four Burmese colors” is not the whole story
Color counts depend on the organization registering the cat. The International Cat Association (TICA) describes Burmese in a broader set of solid and tortoiseshell colors, while the UK’s Governing Council of the Cat Fancy (GCCF) says its system recognizes ten standard colors. These are different classification systems, not evidence that one organization has corrected another.
| Registry and scope | Colors or categories described | Tortoiseshell treatment | Coat-shading language |
|---|---|---|---|
| CFA American Burmese (United States standard) | Sable, champagne, blue, platinum | Not accepted in this four-color standard | Even coat; subtly lighter underparts; other colors disallowed |
| TICA Burmese | Sable brown, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, cream, plus combinations described by the standard | Red or cream paired with sable, chocolate, blue, or lilac | Young cats have darker points; body color deepens and becomes richer with maturity |
| GCCF Burmese (UK classification) | Ten standard colors are recognized; examples on the breed page include brown, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, brown tortie, cream, and blue tortie | Tortoiseshell forms are included, such as brown tortie and blue tortie | Even body color, gradually darker at ears and face, and very slightly darker on the tail |
If a breeder, show catalog, or adoption record gives a color that is not one of CFA’s four, check which registry’s terminology it follows before assuming the cat is misidentified.
The four CFA American Burmese colors
Sable Burmese
Sable is the original and most familiar Burmese color in many descriptions. CFA characterizes the mature coat as rich, warm sable brown. The shade should read as an even brown rather than a striped tabby pattern. Lighting can make sable appear almost black in a low-light photograph or lighter and more reddish in direct sunlight, so a single image is a poor basis for comparing two cats.

Champagne Burmese
Champagne is a warm honey beige. CFA notes a pale gold-tan underside, which can make the lower body look lighter without creating a sharp color boundary. The intended impression is warm and creamy, not a stark white or a gray-beige.
Blue Burmese
Blue Burmese are medium blue with warm fawn undertones. In everyday language this is a blue-gray coat, but “blue” in cat standards means a diluted, slate-like color rather than a literal bright blue. The fawn warmth is important: a cool gray photo may conceal it.
Platinum Burmese
Platinum is pale silvery gray with pale fawn undertones. It is the lightest of CFA’s four named colors, yet it should not be confused with a white cat. The warm undertone and the even, short coat distinguish the intended platinum appearance.

Solid colors, tortoiseshells, and what “pattern” means
Burmese standards generally emphasize an even, short coat rather than dramatic markings. In CFA’s American standard, the four accepted colors are solid categories with subtle underpart lightening. TICA and GCCF additionally describe tortoiseshell Burmese, in which two related color families occur together rather than as a uniform single shade.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →TICA’s tortoiseshell combinations
TICA names tortoiseshell combinations pairing red or cream with sable, chocolate, blue, or lilac. For example, a cat may be described using a sable-and-red tortoiseshell combination or a blue-and-cream combination, according to the registry’s terminology. These are not extra CFA American Burmese colors; they belong to TICA’s broader classification.
GCCF’s UK terminology
GCCF states that ten standard Burmese colors are recognized in its system and gives examples including brown, blue, chocolate, lilac, red, brown tortie, cream, and blue tortie. The page also describes the expected distribution: the body is even, the ears and face become gradually darker, and the tail is only very slightly darker. Because the page’s examples are not a complete enumeration of all ten names, use the GCCF standard or a registration document when an exact UK show color is important.

What Burmese cats generally do not have under these standards
The standards discussed here do not describe a long-haired Burmese coat or a strongly marked tabby pattern as part of the accepted Burmese appearance. A cat with stripes, large white patches, a pointed Siamese-style contrast, or a long coat may still be a lovely companion, but its appearance alone does not establish that it meets a particular Burmese breed standard.
Do Burmese cats change color as they get older?
Yes. TICA explains that young cats can have darker color points, while the body color deepens and becomes richer as the coat matures. With age, the difference between the body and the legs, head, and tail becomes slight. This means a kitten photograph and an adult photograph may look noticeably different without representing different genetic color categories.
How to compare a kitten with an adult
- Identify the registry description being used; a CFA color name cannot automatically be converted to a TICA or GCCF label.
- Compare photographs taken in similar, neutral lighting. Warm indoor bulbs can exaggerate brown, gold, or red tones.
- Look at the whole coat, not only the face or paws. Maturity-related deepening is evaluated across the body.
- Use the cat’s registration or breeder documentation for the official color designation. Visual comparison is supplementary, not proof of pedigree.
Are there different types or breeds of Burmese cats?
“Types” can refer to registry standards, regional lines, or color categories rather than completely separate breeds. CFA publishes pages for both Burmese and European Burmese, while TICA and GCCF use their own standards and naming conventions. A cat may therefore be called Burmese in one registry context and described with a different accepted color list in another.

CFA describes Burmese as shorthaired, stocky, and well muscled. Those structural terms concern breed type, not coat color. A sable and a platinum cat can both fit the same American Burmese body description, while two cats with similar brown coats may belong to different breeds or have no documented pedigree.
American Burmese versus European Burmese terminology
Do not infer a cat’s exact breed variety from color alone. The American Burmese page supplies the four-color CFA list, whereas CFA’s European Burmese material is a separate standard page. If a breeder uses “European Burmese,” ask which registry will issue the pedigree and which standard governs the color and body description. The name on an advertisement is not a substitute for registration papers.
How to identify a Burmese color responsibly
Use a layered check rather than matching a casual color word to a photograph:
- Confirm the source of the name. Ask whether the description follows CFA, TICA, GCCF, or another registry.
- Check the pattern category. Decide whether the coat is intended to be solid or tortoiseshell under that standard.
- Assess maturity. Record the cat’s age because Burmese color can deepen as the coat develops.
- Inspect undertones. CFA’s blue and platinum descriptions include warm fawn undertones; champagne includes a pale gold-tan underside.
- Review documentation. A pedigree, registration number, or breeder record is stronger evidence of breed and official color than an image.
- Keep the claim narrow. If no registry record exists, describe what you see—such as “shorthaired brown cat with an even coat”—rather than asserting a pedigreed Burmese classification.
Health context: color is not a diagnosis
Coat shade does not tell you whether a Burmese cat is healthy. CFA’s European Burmese page discusses hypokalaemic myopathy, a heritable condition that causes muscle weakness. That source does not establish how common the condition is, and the presence of a particular color is not presented as a diagnostic test.
If a Burmese cat shows weakness, difficulty rising, an unusual gait, or repeated episodes of collapse, seek veterinary care promptly. A color guide cannot diagnose those signs, and no registry color label should be used to reassure yourself that a symptomatic cat is well.
Common identification mistakes
- Treating CFA’s four colors as universal. They are the CFA American Burmese list, not every registry’s complete catalog.
- Calling every gray cat “blue Burmese.” The breed and pedigree still need documentation; “blue” is a registry color term.
- Ignoring tortoiseshell terminology. TICA and GCCF include tortoiseshell combinations that do not appear in CFA’s four-color American standard.
- Comparing kitten and adult photos as if color were fixed. TICA describes dark points in young cats and richer body color with maturity.
- Using a photograph as proof of breed. Images show appearance, not ancestry or registration.
- Assuming health from appearance. Color categories are not veterinary screenings, and a coat cannot rule out inherited disease.
Bottom line for choosing the right color description
If you need the familiar four-color answer, use CFA’s American Burmese terms: sable, champagne, blue, and platinum. If you are reading a TICA listing, expect additional solid colors and tortoiseshell combinations; if you are using the UK GCCF system, expect ten recognized standard colors and its own shading language. State the registry, pattern, and age whenever you describe a Burmese coat. That wording is more accurate than calling any list “vet-verified,” because these categories come from registry standards rather than veterinary certification.
