California Freshwater Fish: Official Species and How to Find Legal Fishing Waters

California has more than 130 native freshwater fish taxa and a separate inland sport-fishing list. Learn the difference, explore the major regions and species, and follow a waterbody-specific checklist before you fish.

California has more than 130 native freshwater fish taxa spread across six major regions and more than 20 watersheds. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) also publishes an inland sport-fishing list of fish anglers may seek, from trout and bass to kokanee, striped bass and white sturgeon. Those are related but different lists: being native, appearing on a sport-fishing page, or occurring in a lake does not by itself make a fish legal to keep.

To find fish you can actually pursue, start with CDFW’s map-based Fishing Guide, select the exact waterbody, and then confirm the current freshwater regulations, low-flow rules, access information, advisories and any species-specific requirements. The waterbody—not a statewide species list—determines the season, methods and harvest allowance that apply to your trip.

What “official freshwater fish” means in California

CDFW uses two concepts that are easy to confuse. Its Native Fish Program covers California’s native freshwater fauna, including species that are rare, declining or protected. Its inland sport-fishing information is an angler-oriented list of fish people may target in inland waters. The sport list is useful for trip planning, but it is not a complete inventory of native fish and it is not a promise that every listed species is present, catchable or open to harvest at every location.

CDFW’s Native Fish Program describes more than 130 native fish taxa across six major zoogeographic regions and over 20 watersheds. The agency also states that at least 100 native fishes are in decline, headed toward extinction or already extinct, representing 81% of California’s inland fish fauna. A fish can therefore be important to observe or protect even when another population of the same broad type supports recreational fishing elsewhere.

Native status is not a fishing permit

Native status tells you about a fish’s evolutionary history in California. It does not establish an open season, a possession limit, a legal hook or bait, or permission to move the fish. Those details are set by the current rules for the particular waterbody and species. Conversely, a fish sought by anglers may be stocked, introduced, migratory or present only in isolated waters; its appearance on an inland sport-fishing page does not make every population a legal target.

Fish CDFW identifies for inland sport fishing

CDFW’s inland “Fish for…” list includes the following subjects. Treat the list as an official starting point for identifying possible targets, not as a statewide open-water directory.

Fish named by CDFW How to use the listing
American shad An inland sport-fishing subject; check the waterbody’s current rules and whether seasonal access or flows affect the run.
Black bass Use the exact lake or reservoir listing to determine local seasons, gear and harvest provisions.
Brook trout A coldwater target whose presence and regulations vary by stream, lake and elevation.
Brown trout Confirm the specific water’s trout rules rather than applying a statewide assumption.
California golden trout Plan by named water and region; remote access and special regulations may matter.
Coastal cutthroat trout Check the coastal watershed and the current regulations for the reach you intend to fish.
Coastal rainbow trout/steelhead Determine whether the fishery is inland, migratory or subject to additional salmonid rules.
Eagle Lake rainbow trout Use the Fishing Guide and regulations for the particular lake or connected waters.
Goose Lake redband trout Verify current access, water conditions and the local rule set before traveling.
Kern River rainbow trout Look up the exact Kern River section; rules can differ between reaches.
Kokanee Check the reservoir or lake entry, current limits and any special gear provisions.
Lahontan cutthroat trout Confirm the water-specific season, method and possession rules.
Little Kern golden trout Use the named-water entry and check whether access or conservation provisions apply.
McCloud River redband trout Check the McCloud-area water listing and the current reach-specific regulations.
Paiute cutthroat trout Do not infer harvest permission from the species name; read the current rule for the exact water.
Sacramento perch A native sunfish now supporting fisheries in isolated waters outside its original Central Valley range; verify the individual water.
Sacramento splittail Check current rules and identification requirements before targeting or retaining one.
Striped bass Use the waterbody listing for current seasons, methods and limits.
Warner Lakes redband trout Plan around the named lakes, access conditions and the applicable local provisions.
White sturgeon Confirm current sturgeon-specific rules, reporting requirements and the exact inland water.

The table deliberately does not assign one statewide season or bag limit to any fish. CDFW’s own guidance directs anglers to the exact water and current booklet because regulations, closures, stocking and access can change.

Where California’s freshwater fish live

California’s native fish are organized by broad watersheds and regions rather than by a single statewide habitat. CDFW identifies the Klamath River, Sacramento–San Joaquin, North Coast, Great Basin, South Coast and Colorado River regions. Within those regions, fish occupy very different environments.

  • Perennial rivers: year-round flows can support trout, native minnows, migratory fish and other river communities, but temperature, flow and barriers determine which species occur in a given reach.
  • Freshwater lakes: natural lakes may hold native populations or isolated transplants, while reservoirs often support managed sport fisheries.
  • Artificial impoundments: dams and reservoirs can provide warmwater or coldwater angling opportunities, with stocking and access changing over time.
  • Intermittent streams: in the Great Basin, fish may persist in short-lived flows and connected refuge habitats rather than a continuous river.
  • Desert springs: isolated springs can support highly localized native fish communities that are especially sensitive to disturbance.
  • Alkaline lakes: unusual water chemistry creates specialized habitats; a species’ presence there does not imply that ordinary fishing methods or harvest rules apply.

Because habitat is so varied, “Where can I catch this fish?” cannot be answered reliably with a single statewide location. A species name must be paired with a current waterbody entry and an appropriate season.

How to use CDFW’s Fishing Guide to choose a water

CDFW’s map-based Fishing Guide is the practical first stop for locating a legal, accessible trip. It brings together fish-planting locations, freshwater sport-fishing regulations, historically good places to fish, boat launches, license-sales agents and waters identified as quagga-mussel infested.

  1. Open the Fishing Guide and choose freshwater. Start with the map rather than a generic web search so that the location and regulation layers remain connected.
  2. Search for the lake, reservoir, river or stream reach. Use the named waterbody, not merely a county or region. If a river has multiple reaches, select the section where you will stand or launch.
  3. Review the location details. Check access points, boat launches, historically productive-water information and any current notices shown for that site.
  4. Check planting information separately. A planting record can explain why a fish may be present, but planting is not a guarantee of current catch rates, open access or legal retention.
  5. Open the freshwater regulations for that exact water. Read the season dates, species provisions, gear and bait restrictions, size or possession limits, and any special closure language.
  6. Check low-flow provisions. CDFW links low-flow fishing rules because some streams receive additional restrictions when water levels fall. Treat a normal-season rule as insufficient until you have checked the current low-flow information.
  7. Confirm the latest booklet or map revision. CDFW says regulations booklets may be revised throughout the year. Use the newest version available on the agency’s site, not a saved copy from a prior season.
  8. Contact the applicable regional office when the map is unclear. CDFW specifically directs anglers with questions about locations, planting or specific regulations to the relevant regional office.

Rules and trip checks to complete before leaving

Species presence and a place’s reputation do not establish a legal fishery. Complete these checks for every trip:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • License: confirm that you have the required California sport-fishing license and any applicable validation or report card before fishing.
  • Water-specific regulations: verify season, method, bait, hook, size, possession and closure provisions for the exact waterbody.
  • Low-flow status: read the current low-flow rules for streams and rivers where reduced water may trigger extra limits.
  • Planting and advisories: review current fish-planting schedules and fish-health advisories. Both can change after you plan a trip.
  • Invasive-species prevention: check CDFW’s quagga-mussel and other invasive-species information for the destination. Infested waters may have inspection, cleaning or launch requirements.
  • Access: confirm that the launch, trail, parking area or shoreline is open. A point shown on a map is not necessarily open on the day you arrive.
  • Identification: carry a current identification reference and release any fish you cannot identify confidently, especially where native or protected species could be confused with legal targets.

Two native-fish examples that require extra care

Sacramento perch

Sacramento perch is California’s only native sunfish, according to CDFW. Its original range was in the Central Valley, but it is now found in roughly two dozen isolated waters, mostly in remote northern California and along the Eastern Sierra, where it supports sport fisheries. That combination makes it a useful example of why “native” and “where to catch” must be handled together: a population can be native to California while the fishery you encounter is outside the historical range.

Before targeting Sacramento perch, identify the specific lake or reservoir in the Fishing Guide and read that water’s current rules. Do not assume that every isolated population is open, that a neighboring water has the same limits, or that a reported historical location remains accessible.

Clear Lake hitch

Clear Lake hitch is a minnow subspecies endemic to Clear Lake and its tributaries and culturally important to the region. CDFW says it was listed as threatened under the California Endangered Species Act in 2014. It belongs in a conservation and identification discussion, not on a casual catch list. The available agency material does not establish current recreational take rules, so anglers should not target or retain it unless the current regulations and agency guidance explicitly allow it.

Match the fish to a realistic planning question

If your priority is… Start with… Then verify…
A coldwater trout trip The Fishing Guide’s named lake, river reach or high-elevation water Current trout season, special gear rules, access, flow and stocking information
A warmwater lake trip The exact reservoir or lake entry for bass, perch or other listed warmwater fish Species-specific limits, boat-launch status, invasive-species procedures and advisories
A migratory or large-river fishery The river section and the fish’s inland or anadromous classification Season dates, reporting or validation requirements, flow restrictions and reach closures
A native-fish observation outing The relevant watershed and habitat type Protection status, handling guidance and whether fishing is permitted at that site

This approach prevents a common mistake: choosing a fish first and treating any water where it has ever been reported as interchangeable. California’s waters differ in habitat, access and law even when they share a region or species name.

Use the California Fishing Passport as a species guide

CDFW’s California Fishing Passport is an online species-oriented resource for catching and documenting fish. Its materials are organized into inland warmwater, inland coldwater and anadromous sections, which can help you turn a broad interest in California fish into a checklist of species and habitats to investigate.

CDFW says it has suspended sending publications, so use the Passport as an online resource rather than expecting a printed copy by mail. The Passport does not replace the current regulations map, booklet or waterbody-specific notices; use it for identification and species planning, then complete the legal and access checks for the destination.

A reliable pre-trip workflow

  1. Choose a region or fish category, such as inland coldwater trout or a warmwater reservoir fish.
  2. Use the Fishing Guide to identify a named waterbody with current access information.
  3. Read the complete entry for that water, including planting, launch, advisory and invasive-species notices.
  4. Open the latest freshwater regulations and record the exact season, method, size and possession rules that apply.
  5. Check low-flow rules and any temporary closure before departure.
  6. Carry the required license, report card or validation, plus identification references and equipment appropriate to the legal method.
  7. At the site, recheck posted notices and release any fish whose identity or legal status is uncertain.

Following those steps lets you use CDFW’s official fish lists without mistaking them for a blanket permission to harvest. California offers an unusually broad range of freshwater habitats and angling subjects, but the lawful answer to “what fish can I catch?” is always tied to the current rules for the particular water in front of you.
