They are recognizable by external ear flaps, large front flippers, loud social calls, and striking differences between adult males and females. The ten facts below focus on Zalophus californianus, the California sea lion—the species covered by the detailed agency information available for this topic—not every sea lion species worldwide.
1. California sea lions are eared seals
NOAA Fisheries describes California sea lions as “eared seals” native to the West Coast of North America. Their scientific name is Zalophus californianus. The visible ear flaps on each side of the head and the broad front flippers are the quickest clues that you are looking at a sea lion rather than a true seal. Both groups are pinnipeds, but true seals lack external ear flaps and have a different body design for moving on land and swimming.

The word “seal” is therefore not wrong in a broad everyday sense, but California sea lions belong to the eared-seal family. Keeping the species name in mind matters because range, breeding sites, body size, and migration differ among sea lion species.

2. Males and females look remarkably different
Color and build
Adult females and juveniles are generally slender, with coats ranging from blonde to tan. Adult males are much heavier-looking and usually dark brown to nearly black. A mature male also develops a pronounced forehead crest, giving his head a higher, more block-shaped profile than a female’s.
Color can vary with age, wet fur, lighting, and viewing distance, so it should not be used alone for identification. A dark animal is not automatically a male, and a pale animal is not automatically a juvenile. The combination of body proportions, head shape, external ears, and context is more reliable.
How to tell a sea lion from a seal
- Look for small external ear flaps behind the eyes; these are characteristic of eared seals.
- Sea lions have broad front flippers that are conspicuous in the water and when the animal is resting ashore.
- A large, dark animal with a forehead crest is likely an adult male California sea lion, while a smaller blonde or tan animal is more likely a female or juvenile.
3. Their size and expected lifespan depend on sex and source
| Animal | Approximate weight | Approximate length |
|---|---|---|
| Adult female | 240 pounds | 6 feet |
| Adult male | 700 pounds | 7.5 feet |
These are NOAA Fisheries’ approximate quick-fact figures, not measurements that apply to every individual. The difference between the sexes is substantial: an adult male can weigh nearly three times as much as an adult female. Age, health, season, and whether the animal has recently fed also affect an individual’s mass.

NOAA Fisheries gives a general lifespan of 20 to 30 years in its species quick facts. The National Park Service reports a different set of figures: up to 17 years in the wild and more than 31 years for one captive animal. These numbers describe different sources and contexts, so they should not be merged into one universal maximum. Wild survival, captivity, sex, disease, food supply, and human-caused injuries all influence how long an individual lives. The NPS habitat and species overview is available at National Park Service: California Sea Lion.
4. They occupy a long stretch of the eastern North Pacific
Overall range
California sea lions occur from southeast Alaska down the Pacific coast to central Mexico. That is a broad geographic range, but it does not mean every animal uses every part of it year-round. Local abundance changes with season, age, sex, food, and breeding activity.

Breeding range
The primary breeding range extends from the Channel Islands off Southern California to central Mexico. Breeding colonies are therefore concentrated within the southern part of the species’ larger distribution. Away from those colonies, animals may be encountered at feeding areas, haul-out sites, or temporary resting places.
When identifying a sea lion in another region, use the location as supporting evidence rather than proof by itself. Other sea lion species have different ranges, so a sighting outside this span should not automatically be labeled a California sea lion.
5. Seasonal movement differs sharply between males, females, and pups
Typical pattern in normal years
In normal years, adult males migrate north after the breeding season to feeding areas off California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and southeast Alaska. Their movement follows the seasonal opportunity to feed rather than a permanent change of home range.
Females and pups generally remain near breeding colonies while pups are dependent. This difference explains why a location can have many males at one time of year but mostly females and young animals at another. It also means a “where do sea lions live?” answer must include season and sex, not just a single map point.
What happens during warm El Niño years?
Warm El Niño conditions can alter prey distribution and ocean temperatures. NOAA notes that some females may move north during these years, temporarily changing the usual pattern. That exception is why a female seen well north of a breeding colony is not necessarily lost or outside the species’ normal behavior.

6. Their menu changes with prey availability
California sea lions are flexible marine predators. NOAA lists squid, anchovies, mackerel, rockfish, and sardines among their foods, while the National Park Service also describes a broad seafood diet. The exact mix changes with what is abundant in a particular place and season.

There is no single fixed “sea lion diet.” A school of anchovies may be important in one area, while squid or another fish dominates elsewhere. Ocean conditions, commercial and natural prey movements, and the animal’s life stage all affect feeding choices. Describing the species as eating “fish” is accurate but incomplete; squid and several kinds of schooling and bottom-associated fish are also documented components.
Diet flexibility helps explain the species’ wide range, but it does not make food unlimited. Changes in prey abundance can alter migration, body condition, reproductive success, and where groups gather.
7. Mothers and pups recognize each other by sound and scent
Individual calls in a crowded colony
California sea lion colonies can be noisy. Adult males bark in a dog-like way, while females and pups produce individual vocalizations. A mother can pick out her own pup’s call from many nearby animals, an essential skill when hundreds of young are close together.
Scent provides a second check
After locating a pup by voice, the mother also uses scent to confirm its identity. This two-part system—individual calling followed by olfactory checking—reduces the chance of a mother nursing the wrong young animal in a dense breeding colony.

People should not imitate calls, shout at a colony, or try to draw an animal closer. Noise and crowding can interrupt the natural reunions that these signals support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. A motionless sea lion may be “rafting,” not trapped
Rafting is a resting behavior in which a sea lion floats motionless with its flippers held above the water. NOAA describes this posture as a way to rest and regulate body temperature. From a distance, the raised flippers can resemble fishing gear or another entanglement.
How to assess a suspected entanglement
- Observe from a safe distance and look for actual rope, netting, hooks, or other gear around the body.
- Do not enter the water, approach the animal, pull on gear, or attempt a rescue yourself.
- Record the location, time, species if known, and a description of the gear or injury.
- Contact a local marine mammal stranding network if the animal appears injured, trapped, or unable to swim normally.
Raised flippers alone are not evidence of an emergency. A clear view of gear, bleeding, repeated struggling, or inability to keep afloat is more concerning than a brief, calm rafting posture.
9. A mother may leave her pup for several days to feed
The nursing-and-feeding cycle
A California sea lion mother typically nurses for one to two days, then may travel to sea to feed for two to five days before returning. During her absence, the pup remains ashore and does not eat. The mother returns to nurse, then leaves again, repeating this cycle until the pup is weaned, a process that takes almost a year.
Why a lone pup is not automatically abandoned
This long pattern of absence can look alarming to people watching a beach. A pup resting alone may simply be waiting for its mother’s next return. Touching it, moving it, offering food, or trying to push it into the water can cause harm and may interfere with the reunion process.

Keep people and dogs well away, avoid surrounding the pup, and monitor only from a distance. If the animal is visibly injured, entangled, repeatedly vomiting, or in another clear emergency, contact a local marine mammal stranding network rather than attempting hands-on care.
10. Entanglement, toxins, disease, and harassment threaten them
Main documented threats
- Fishing-gear entanglement: lines, nets, and other gear can restrict movement, cause deep wounds, or prevent feeding.
- Harmful algal blooms: algal toxins can accumulate in prey and poison sea lions that consume them.
- Disease: infections and other illnesses can affect individuals and groups.
- Human-caused injury: vessel strikes, discarded materials, and other direct impacts can kill or injure animals.
NOAA Fisheries states that California sea lions are protected under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act. Feeding or harassing wild sea lions is harmful and illegal. Harassment includes actions that cause an animal to change its behavior, flee, dive repeatedly, or abandon a resting or nursing site.
What the historical population figure does—and does not—say
For the U.S. stock, NOAA reports a maximum population growth rate of 7 percent per year from 1975 to 2014. That is a historical maximum for a defined stock and period, not a current annual growth rate for every California sea lion or every part of the range. It should not be used to assume that an individual colony is increasing today or that threats are unimportant.

- Stay far enough away that the animal does not react to your presence.
- Never feed, touch, chase, block, or call to a sea lion.
- Keep dogs leashed and away from haul-out and nursery areas.
- Leave pups where they are unless trained responders direct otherwise.
- Report suspected entanglement or serious injury to a local marine mammal stranding network.
The safest response is usually quiet distance and accurate reporting. California sea lions are wild, powerful marine mammals whose normal behaviors—seasonal travel, rafting, vocal reunions, and temporary maternal absences—can look unusual without being emergencies.
