California has 16 animal-related state-symbol categories on the California State Capitol Museum’s current list. That number does not mean the state has exactly 16 official animal species: the list combines broad groups such as “state fish” categories with individual designations such as the state animal, state bird, state slug and state snake.
The California grizzly bear is California’s official state animal. It was designated in 1953, even though the subspecies is extinct; the state’s animal symbols also include a red-legged frog, pallid bat, California gray whale, desert tortoise, banana slug and the giant garter snake, added most recently.

What “16 state animals” means in California
The phrase “16 official state animals” is a convenient search term, but it is not the precise legal description of California’s list. The California State Capitol Museum displays 16 animal-related categories, each paired with a designated symbol. Some categories identify a single species; others describe a setting or biological group, such as freshwater fish, marine fish or marine mammal.
For that reason, “16 categories” is the clearest count. It avoids implying that California selected 16 species under one identical legal program. The list also changes over time: the giant garter snake became the state snake in 2025, so older pages may show only 15 categories.

The symbols that define California’s official animal identity
California grizzly bear: the state animal
The California grizzly bear holds the specific “state animal” title. The California State Capitol Museum says Assembly Bill 1014, Chapter 1140, made it official in 1953. The California Secretary of State’s 2025 State of California Symbols & Emblems records that the last living California grizzly specimen was shot in Tulare County in 1922.
That history creates an important distinction: a species can remain an official emblem after disappearing from the wild. The bear on California’s flag and seal represents the state’s history and identity; the designation does not indicate that grizzlies still live in California or that the subspecies is an extant wildlife population.

The California valley quail became the state bird through Assembly Bill 776, Chapter 777, in 1931. Its inclusion illustrates that California’s symbols were adopted at different times rather than in one package. The bird category is separate from the state animal category, so the quail does not replace or compete with the grizzly bear.

California red-legged frog: the state amphibian
Assembly Bill 2364 established the California red-legged frog as the state amphibian in 2014. This is a separate designation from the state reptile and state snake categories. “Amphibian” describes the category, while the named frog is the particular symbol selected for it.
Giant garter snake: the newest category
The Governor of California announced the giant garter snake as the state snake in October 2025. This recent action explains why lists prepared before that announcement may be incomplete. It also shows how the state-symbol roster can expand without changing the older designations.
How the 16 categories cover land, freshwater and ocean life
Land and freshwater symbols
Several categories represent animals associated with California’s terrestrial and inland habitats. The pallid bat occupies the bat category; the desert tortoise represents reptiles; and the giant garter snake represents snakes. The California red-legged frog covers amphibians, while the California golden trout is the freshwater-fish symbol.

The California valley quail and California dogface butterfly add bird and insect categories. The banana slug gives the list a slug category, a reminder that the roster is not limited to animals people commonly see in zoos or wildlife documentaries. The California grizzly bear is the broad “state animal” emblem, distinct from those more specific groupings.

Marine and coastal symbols
California’s coastline and offshore waters account for a large part of the list. The Dungeness crab is the state crustacean, the garibaldi is the state marine fish, and the California gray whale is the state marine mammal. The Pacific leatherback sea turtle fills the state marine reptile category.
Two additional coastal designations use nonstandard “animal” groupings: black abalone is the state seashell, and the marine list includes a fish category separate from freshwater fish. These labels are not interchangeable. A marine fish is not counted as the state freshwater fish, and a seashell designation is not the same legal category as a mollusk or marine invertebrate category.
Prehistoric and geological symbols
California also recognizes deep time. Augustynolophus morrisi is the state dinosaur, while the saber-toothed cat is the state fossil. A dinosaur designation identifies a prehistoric animal; a fossil designation identifies a preserved organism or fossil record category. They therefore add two different kinds of representation to the 16-category count.

Designation status is not the same as conservation status
A state-symbol title is a cultural and governmental designation. It does not automatically mean that the named animal is common, threatened, protected, extinct or managed under one particular wildlife program. The grizzly bear demonstrates the point most clearly: it remains California’s state animal although the California grizzly is extinct.

The same caution applies when reading the rest of the list. A category tells you what California chose to honor, not how many individuals exist or whether a population is increasing. The official materials identified for this list establish the category names and several designation dates, but they do not provide one comprehensive population statistic for all 16 symbols.

Is the California grizzly bear still alive?
No. The California Roster’s 2025 symbols document reports that the last living specimen was shot in Tulare County in 1922. The bear remains a state symbol despite its extinction.
What was California’s newest animal symbol?
The giant garter snake became the state snake in the Governor’s October 2025 announcement, making it the newest addition identified in the current list.
Are all 16 symbols living species?
No. The list includes a fossil and a dinosaur category, and the state animal is the extinct California grizzly bear. It also includes a seashell category, so the 16 entries are not all the same kind of biological designation.
How to read the list accurately
- Use “16 animal-related state-symbol categories” when giving the total.
- Use “California grizzly bear” for the state animal, rather than treating every entry as a state animal in the narrow legal sense.
- Keep symbolic designation separate from extinction, abundance or legal conservation status.
- Check the date of any list you consult, because the giant garter snake was added in 2025.
- Preserve the category labels: freshwater fish, marine fish, marine mammal and marine reptile are distinct entries.
Read this way, California’s roster is more than a list of 16 creatures. It is a map of the state’s history, habitats, coastline, geology and civic identity—from a prehistoric dinosaur and fossil cat to a modern snake designation and a bear that remains emblematic long after its disappearance.
