The most relevant study found a possible improvement in nighttime rest for some large dogs with osteoarthritis—not proof of a general benefit for all dogs.
What can a calming dog bed do?
A well-fitting, supportive bed gives a dog a dedicated resting place. Comfort may matter especially for older dogs, large dogs, or dogs with mobility concerns. The word “calming” on a label, however, is not evidence that a bed treats clinical anxiety or will make every dog sleep better.

In the available bed study, researchers examined one orthopedic mattress in a specific group of dogs with diagnosed osteoarthritis. It did not compare different bed styles or establish that other products marketed as calming have the same effects.

What the dog-bed study found—and what it did not
The University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine report describes an open-label, single-arm pilot study of a 7-inch, three-layer high-density foam mattress. It followed 40 dogs for 38 days, including 28 days after the bed was introduced. The dogs were over three years old, weighed more than 70 pounds, and had osteoarthritis confirmed by a veterinary radiologist. The report does not establish a publication year. Read the study report.

Owners reported improvements in pain, stiffness, joint function, gait, energy, and quality of life. Activity monitors showed that 50% of the dogs had at least a 13% decrease in nighttime activity, while 25% had at least a 33% decrease. Reduced nighttime activity may be consistent with more restful periods, but it does not prove the dogs slept better or that the bed caused the change.
- There was no control group, so the study cannot separate the bed’s effects from other explanations.
- The follow-up was short, and participants were a narrow group of large dogs with osteoarthritis.
- The findings concern one mattress, not every orthopedic bed or a category of products labeled “calming.”
The report states that the trial’s purpose was “to evaluate the ability of the Big Barker bed to decrease orthopedic pain, improve joint mobility & function, increase activity and improve quality/quantity of sleep.” That sentence describes the study objective, not a proven result.

Does a calming bed treat anxiety?
There is no basis here for treating a calming bed as an anxiety intervention. A 2021 review in Veterinary Evidence appraised eight controlled trials of dog-appeasing pheromone products and judged the overall evidence weak; that adjacent evidence does not establish that beds resolve anxiety. Pain can also affect rest, and a veterinarian can help assess whether discomfort or another issue may be involved. The American Animal Hospital Association’s guidance on anxious or reactive patients concerns behavior management and handling in veterinary settings, not pet beds as a treatment. How to choose a bed for your dog
Choose for the individual dog’s body, sleeping habits, and mobility—not for the word “calming” alone. There is no head-to-head evidence here showing that one bed style or brand is best.
- Fit: Check that the bed accommodates your dog’s usual sleeping posture, including stretching out if that is how your dog rests.
- Access: Consider whether your dog can get in and out easily, especially if mobility is limited.
- Support: If joint comfort is a concern, consider a supportive orthopedic bed as a bedding option, without assuming it will treat pain.
- Cleaning: Look for a washable cover and a practical way to clean the bed.
- Durability: Choose materials suited to your dog’s size and habits.
- Use: Notice whether your dog chooses the bed voluntarily. A bed that is comfortable but ignored may not meet that dog’s preferences.
Does your dog need to sleep on your bed?
A dog sleeping in your room is not the same as a dog sleeping on your mattress. A 2017 study indexed by PubMed monitored 40 healthy adults and their dogs for seven nights. Human sleep efficiency was lower when the dog was on the bed than when the dog was in the room. This finding concerns the person’s sleep position; it does not show whether a calming bed improves a dog’s sleep. View the study record.
