Flattened ears, dilated pupils, pressed-back whiskers, and a tucked or tightly wrapped tail can signal that a cat is frightened or uncomfortable. None predicts an attack by itself. If you notice these cues, stop approaching or touching the cat and give it room to move away.

Four signs a cat may be frightened or defensive

Look at the cat’s overall posture and the situation, rather than treating a single body-language cue as a guarantee of what will happen. Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes the following as possible fear signs.

1. Ears flattened or held outward

Ears pressed down or turned outward can indicate discomfort. They are a reason to pause, not proof that a bite is imminent.

2. Dilated pupils with a guarded expression

Wide pupils may accompany fear, but pupil size alone does not establish how a cat will respond. Consider the cat’s posture and whether it can retreat.

Whiskers held close to the face or angled down can be another sign of distress. Do not move closer to test what the cat will do.

4. Tail tucked or wrapped tightly close to the body

A tucked or closely wrapped tail, especially with a guarded posture, can signal fear. Avoid cornering or restraining the cat.

If several signs appear together—or the cat is hissing, growling, swatting, or trying to escape—end the interaction and create distance. Give the cat a clear way to leave.

Why a cat may bite or scratch

Aggression is a behavior, not a diagnosis of a cat’s character. The trigger matters: play, redirected arousal, and pain can require different responses.

Play aggression

A cat may bite or scratch during play, particularly when play is directed at a person’s hands. Stop using hands as play targets. Redirect the cat to an interactive toy held away from your body so it can engage with the toy instead.

Redirected aggression

A cat aroused by something it cannot reach may lash out at someone nearby. Triggers can include another cat outside a window or conflict between cats in the home. Reduce or avoid the trigger where possible, and do not approach an aroused cat.

Pain or illness

A cat in pain may resist being touched or moved and may hiss, bite, or scratch. Avoid handling a painful area and contact a veterinarian for assessment and care. A sudden behavior change or repeated aggression also warrants veterinary advice; when basic management is not enough, a veterinary behaviorist may be appropriate.

How to reduce the chance of an attack

  • Let the cat disengage. Do not chase, corner, or restrain a cat showing distress. Leave an unobstructed route away from you.
  • Keep rough play away from hands. The CDC advises against rough play with cats and kittens. Use a toy to redirect play rather than letting a cat bite or scratch fingers.
  • Supervise children. The CDC advises always supervising children around cats. Teach children to stop interacting when a cat moves away or seems uncomfortable, and to tell an adult about any bite or scratch.
  • Be cautious with unfamiliar cats. Do not assume an unfamiliar cat welcomes handling; give it space.
  • Get help for recurring or unexplained aggression. A veterinarian can assess possible pain or illness and advise on behavior support.

What to do after a cat bite or scratch

  1. Wash the wound immediately with warm, soapy water, as the CDC advises.
  2. Contact a healthcare provider promptly if the cat’s rabies vaccination status is unknown, the cat appears sick, the wound is serious, or the wound becomes red, painful, warm, or swollen. The CDC also advises medical attention if more than five years have passed since your last tetanus shot.
  3. Contact animal control or your local health department about an unprovoked bite from a stray cat or a cat whose vaccination status is uncertain. Follow local public-health and medical advice for the specific exposure.

The CDC says about 20–80% of reported cat bites and scratches become infected. That range applies to reported incidents; it is not an estimate for every bite or scratch in the population.

When rabies may be a concern

Aggression can be one sign associated with rabies in animals, but aggression alone does not diagnose rabies. Do not try to assess exposure risk yourself: contact a healthcare provider and local public-health authorities about a concerning bite or scratch.

Under CDC guidance for the United States, a healthy dog, cat, or ferret that has exposed a person or pet may be confined and observed for 10 days in coordination with public-health authorities. If the animal is ill or develops signs during that period, coordinate with local authorities. Local protocols may vary.
