Because older, arthritic, sick, or less mobile cats may not move away from a hot surface, a soft bed in a warm, draft-free spot is the safer first choice. If you use a pad, keep the cat supervised, use the lowest setting, and make sure they can leave the heated area at any time.
What warmth can—and cannot—do for a senior cat
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine recommends a warm resting place for older cats, and VCA Animal Hospitals includes warmth and shelter among home-comfort measures for cats with osteoarthritis. These are comfort recommendations; the guidance does not show that an electric heating pad treats arthritis or pain.

Osteoarthritis can cause joint inflammation, stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility. VCA describes it as a progressive degenerative joint disease and notes that more than 90% of cats over 10 have radiographic evidence of osteoarthritis. That figure refers to X-ray findings, not necessarily visible symptoms. Heat should not replace a veterinary assessment or a treatment plan.

It can cause burns. VCA warns that elderly, arthritic, or sick pets may be especially vulnerable because they can sleep deeply or have difficulty getting up. Cornell puts the practical rule simply: “Too much heat, though, can potentially burn a cat who can’t move quickly, so be sure to think warm, not hot.”

Whether a pad is appropriate depends in part on whether your cat can readily move away from it. A cat who is weak, painful, deeply asleep, or mobility-limited may not be able to escape heat that becomes uncomfortable. Do not confine a cat in a crate or carrier with a heating pad.
How to use a heating pad more cautiously
VCA’s safety guidance recommends the lowest heat setting, several blankets between the pad and the pet, and supervision. Set it up so the cat can move completely off the warm area. Be especially cautious about leaving a pad with a cat who has trouble rising or moving independently.

- Use the lowest setting. Do not place your cat directly on the pad; cover it with several blankets.
- Keep the cat supervised. Watch for signs that they are too warm or cannot move away.
- Leave an unheated escape area. The cat must be able to move fully away from the pad. Never lock them in a carrier or crate with it.
- Stop if your cat seems unwell or cannot move away. Contact your veterinarian for guidance, particularly if your cat’s condition worsens.
VCA notes that a veterinarian may sometimes recommend an additional heat source as part of care for a sick cat. That advice is specific to veterinarian-guided home nursing, not a general recommendation to leave a heating pad running unattended.
A safer first step: make the resting place warm
Try a soft, comfortable bed in a warm, draft-free location. Cornell advises keeping an older cat’s preferred resting place out of drafts and avoiding excessive heat. A self-warming bed may be one way to provide a warmer resting spot, but no particular product is endorsed by this guidance, and a bed is not an arthritis treatment.

For a cat with osteoarthritis, VCA also recommends comfortable sleeping areas and home adjustments that reduce jumping or climbing. Keep food, water, and litter easy to reach; warmth alone will not address painful movement or access problems.

Ask your veterinarian about new or worsening stiffness, reluctance to jump, reduced activity, or difficulty reaching the litter box, food, or water. Arthritis is common in older cats, but a change in behavior or mobility should not automatically be dismissed as aging. Cornell recommends veterinary examinations and attention to changes in senior cats.
