A cat’s nose dripping while it purrs is not, by itself, a known effect of purring. The timing may be coincidental: nasal discharge is a symptom that can come from an upper respiratory infection or nasal inflammation, dental disease, or another problem in the nose. A new, persistent, recurrent, or worsening runny nose merits veterinary advice; breathing difficulty, bloody discharge, high fever, or extreme lethargy needs emergency attention.
Does purring make a cat’s nose drip?
The veterinary references available describe causes of nasal discharge, but do not establish purring as a cause. You may notice the drip when your cat is purring without the purring explaining why it is happening. The sound or timing cannot identify the underlying cause.

Nasal discharge is a sign, not a diagnosis. Its appearance and the signs that accompany it can help a veterinarian decide what to investigate, but they cannot reliably identify the cause on their own.

1. Upper respiratory infection or rhinitis
Acute viral infection is the most common cause of feline rhinitis or sinusitis in the Merck Veterinary Manual’s owner reference. Feline herpesvirus and calicivirus are among the viruses that can cause upper respiratory illness. Signs may include nasal or eye discharge, sneezing, coughing, conjunctivitis, mouth ulcers, lethargy, and reduced appetite. Upper respiratory pathogens can spread between cats, and complications can occur.

The Cornell Feline Health Center reports that “Up to 97% of cats are exposed to feline herpes virus in their lifetime, and the virus causes a lifelong infection in up to 80% of exposed cats.” These figures describe exposure and lifelong infection—not the share of cats with a dripping nose or symptoms during purring.
Clear or colored discharge can occur with respiratory illness, but color alone does not prove a particular infection. Because viral infections are possible, antibiotics should not be assumed to treat the cause; a veterinarian determines whether medication is appropriate.

2. Dental disease
Severe dental disease can sometimes cause an oronasal fistula—an abnormal opening between the mouth and nasal cavity—that contributes to nasal discharge. A runny nose alone does not establish that a cat has dental disease or a fistula. A veterinarian needs to assess the mouth and nose.
3. Other nasal problems
Other possibilities include foreign material, trauma, chronic inflammatory disease, allergy or immune-mediated disease, and, less commonly, tumors. Persistent, recurrent, one-sided, bloody, or worsening discharge is a reason for veterinary assessment, not enough evidence to diagnose any of these conditions at home.

What details help a veterinarian assess the drip?
Notice the pattern and any accompanying changes. These are useful history clues, not a home diagnostic score.
- Timing: when the discharge began, whether it is continuous or intermittent, and whether it has returned.
- Distribution: whether it seems to come from one nostril or both.
- Appearance: whether it looks clear, colored, or bloody. Appearance alone does not identify the cause.
- Other signs: sneezing, eye discharge, coughing, appetite or energy changes, mouth problems, or altered breathing.
- Context: possible contact with other cats and any recent trauma or changes in health.
When should you contact a veterinarian?
Arrange a veterinary appointment for a runny nose so the underlying cause can be assessed. Contact a veterinarian promptly if the discharge persists, returns, worsens, or occurs with other signs of illness. The available guidance does not establish one safe waiting period for every cat with this symptom.

What may happen at the veterinary visit?
The veterinarian may ask when the discharge started, whether it has recurred, what it looks like, and whether your cat has been sneezing, eating less, acting tired, or exposed to other cats. The clinician may examine the cat’s nose, breathing, eyes, and mouth, including the teeth.

Depending on the findings, diagnostic methods can include X-rays, CT imaging, rhinoscopy (looking inside the nasal passages with a scope), or nasal biopsy. Testing does not always confirm one cause. Treatment depends on the cause and the cat’s overall health; do not give your cat medication for nasal discharge unless a veterinarian directs you to.
Frequently Asked Questions
Could my cat’s runny nose be a cold?
A viral upper respiratory infection is one common possibility, particularly if discharge occurs with sneezing, eye discharge, coughing, lethargy, or appetite changes. A veterinarian must assess the cause.
Can tooth problems make a cat’s nose run?
Yes. Severe dental disease can be associated with an oronasal fistula, an abnormal connection between the mouth and nose. A veterinarian needs to examine your cat to determine whether this is involved.

Does clear or colored mucus tell me what is wrong?
