Can a Lion Get an X-Ray? Inside Wildlife Veterinary Imaging

Lions can undergo veterinary radiography or CT when clinicians need to investigate injury or illness. Here is how the procedures differ, why anesthesia may be used, and what remains unknown about the viral scan footage.

Yes. Lions can receive diagnostic imaging when a veterinarian needs to investigate an injury or illness. A large cat may be radiographed or scanned in a zoo, wildlife hospital or veterinary teaching facility, using equipment and handling plans adapted to its size and behavior.

The social-media footage behind the question is less certain than the general veterinary practice. A-Z Animals reported on April 13, 2025, that a video showed a lion and other animals being scanned, with anesthesia and vital-sign monitoring. The available accounts do not independently establish the lion’s name, facility, diagnosis, or whether the pictured examination was a conventional X-ray (radiograph) or a CT scan.

What the viral lion-scan story actually confirms

A-Z Animals’ April 13, 2025, article, written by Lianna Tedesco, attributed the footage to an Instagram post from How Things Work (@thishowthingswork). The article described a lion among animals receiving scans and said the animals were anesthetized while their vital signs were monitored.

Those details describe the article’s account of that video; they are not proof of a universal protocol for every lion. The original social-media post was not independently verified in the available material, and no clinical record identifies the animal’s facility, reason for examination, findings or outcome. The image shown online could therefore illustrate a real veterinary procedure without telling viewers exactly which modality was used or what problem the clinicians were investigating.

The broader claim is medically plausible. The University of California, Davis, School of Veterinary Medicine says its large-animal imaging service occasionally treats zoo and wildlife patients. Its large-animal radiography rooms are, in the institution’s words, “large enough to x-ray an elephant.” That demonstrates that veterinary hospitals can accommodate very large patients; it does not authenticate the particular lion in the video.

X-ray and CT are different examinations

People often use “X-ray” as a catch-all term for diagnostic imaging, but radiography and computed tomography (CT) answer different questions.

Modality Image produced What it can show What is known about the lion video
Radiography (plain X-ray) A two-dimensional projection from a brief burst of X-rays Useful for many chest, abdominal and musculoskeletal questions, including fractures, arthritis, some organ changes, and dental or sinus problems The available sources do not confirm that the pictured examination was a radiograph
Computed tomography (CT) Multiple X-ray measurements reconstructed into cross-sectional images More detail in complex anatomy, including organs, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels The article discusses CT as well as X-rays, but does not verify that the lion received a CT scan

How a radiograph works

During radiography, an X-ray beam passes through the body onto a detector. Dense structures such as bone absorb more of the beam and appear differently from air-filled or soft tissues. The result is a projection, so body structures can overlap. Veterinarians commonly obtain more than one view, changing the angle to separate structures and improve interpretation.

UC Davis describes large-animal radiography as useful for evaluating the chest, abdomen and musculoskeletal system. Depending on the clinical question, images may help assess a suspected fracture, lameness, arthritis, internal organs, teeth or sinus spaces. These are possible indications, not a diagnosis of the lion shown online.

How CT adds detail

CT also uses X-rays, but the scanner collects numerous measurements around the patient. Computer reconstruction turns those measurements into slices, allowing the clinician to inspect anatomy section by section instead of viewing one overlapping projection. UC Davis notes that CT can provide greater detail in organs, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels than conventional radiographs.

A photograph of a large circular scanner, or a caption that casually says “X-ray,” cannot establish that CT was used. The exact modality requires confirmation from the treating facility or the original post.

Why a veterinarian might image a lion

Imaging is selected to answer a clinical question, not simply because an animal is unusual. A veterinarian might consider a radiograph or CT when examination findings suggest a problem that cannot be confirmed by looking or feeling alone.

  • Trauma or suspected fracture: Radiographs can show many bone injuries and help evaluate a painful limb or jaw.
  • Lameness: Images may help investigate bone, joint or hoof-related causes of an altered gait.
  • Arthritis or chronic joint disease: Radiographs can reveal changes that support a diagnosis and help guide management.
  • Chest or abdominal concerns: Radiography can provide an initial view of the lungs, heart silhouette and abdominal structures, while CT may clarify complex findings.
  • Dental or sinus disease: Plain views can be useful, but CT may show the three-dimensional extent of disease in the skull.
  • Soft-tissue or vascular questions: CT’s cross-sectional detail can be valuable when a projection image leaves structures superimposed.

None of these possibilities indicates what was wrong with the lion in the footage. Without a veterinary report, viewers should not infer an injury, cancer, infection or other diagnosis from the animal’s presence in a scanner.

Does a lion have to be anesthetized for an X-ray?

Not every veterinary radiograph requires general anesthesia, and there is no evidence here for a single lion-specific rule. UC Davis explains that some pet radiographs can be taken with manual restraint. Sedation or anesthesia may be chosen when an animal is excitable, when positioning would be painful, or when the patient must remain perfectly still for a particular view.

The same page states that its CT and MRI examinations for pets use general anesthesia. That guidance should not be converted into a claim that every lion receiving an X-ray must be anesthetized. A lion’s size, strength, temperament, enclosure setting, medical condition and the planned modality all affect the risk assessment.

The A-Z Animals account says the animals in the pictured footage were anesthetized and monitored. Treat that as a description of that video, not as proof that all lions, or even all lion radiographs, follow the same protocol.

How a wildlife-imaging appointment generally works

Exact procedures vary by institution and species. A typical veterinary team would make decisions in a sequence similar to this:

  1. Define the clinical question. The veterinarian reviews the history and physical findings, decides whether imaging is warranted, and chooses radiography, CT or another test that can answer the question.
  2. Assess transport and handling. Staff plan how to move the lion from its enclosure or treatment area, what barriers are needed, and how to minimize stress and exposure for people and the animal.
  3. Choose restraint or anesthesia. If the animal cannot be positioned safely while awake, the team selects sedation or general anesthesia after weighing the medical and logistical risks. The choice is case-specific.
  4. Prepare and position the patient. Once the animal is safely restrained or anesthetized, technicians position the body or the relevant limb, skull or chest region for the required views. CT requires the patient to remain still while the scanner acquires multiple measurements.
  5. Monitor continuously when anesthetized. Anesthesia teams track vital signs throughout the examination and recovery. The video account specifically described monitoring, but it does not identify which measurements were recorded or provide an anesthetic drug list.
  6. Review the images. A veterinarian or veterinary radiologist evaluates the views for the suspected problem. Additional projections or a different modality may be recommended if the first examination does not answer the question.
  7. Recover and return the lion. Staff observe the animal until it is sufficiently awake and stable for a controlled return to its enclosure or clinical area. Recovery timing depends on the drugs used and the patient’s condition.

This workflow explains why a large cat may appear surrounded by equipment and personnel in a scan-room photograph. It does not reveal what happened in the specific social-media case.

How facilities accommodate very large or wild patients

Wildlife imaging requires more than a household-size X-ray room. Doors, floors, table capacity, gantries and safe access routes must accommodate an animal that may weigh far more than a companion pet. UC Davis’s statement that its radiography rooms can fit an elephant illustrates the scale some large-animal services are designed to handle.

Wild patients also create behavioral and safety challenges. A lion cannot be asked to hold still on command, and staff cannot assume that a familiar veterinary setting will reduce defensive behavior. Teams therefore coordinate veterinary, animal-care and anesthesia personnel before moving the patient. The facility’s layout and the animal’s enclosure may determine whether imaging occurs in a dedicated room, a treatment area or another controlled location.

What an online image can—and cannot—tell you

A scan-room photograph may show that an animal is positioned near an imaging device, but it rarely supplies enough information to identify the test. A conventional radiograph usually involves a tube and detector placed on opposite sides of the body. A CT examination uses a ring-shaped gantry through which the patient moves or is positioned. Images and video can be cropped, mislabeled or described loosely, so visual appearance alone is not a reliable modality label.

Likewise, an animal’s posture does not reveal a diagnosis. A lion lying still could be undergoing a planned examination, an emergency evaluation, or a procedure unrelated to the concern viewers imagine. Only the treating team’s report can establish the indication and result.

Common questions about lion X-rays

Can a lion really fit in an X-ray room?

Yes. Large-animal veterinary facilities are built for patients much larger than domestic dogs and cats. UC Davis specifically says its large-animal radiography rooms are large enough to X-ray an elephant, making imaging of a lion physically plausible in an appropriately equipped hospital.

Was the animal in the video definitely a lion receiving a plain X-ray?

The available account describes a lion among animals being scanned, but it does not independently verify the animal’s identity, facility or modality. It is not possible to state from that material alone that the examination was a conventional radiograph rather than CT.

What problem was the lion being treated for?

No diagnosis or clinical indication is established. Fractures, lameness, arthritis, organ, dental and sinus problems are examples of issues veterinary imaging can investigate in animals, not findings attributed to this lion.

Why would anesthesia be used?

Stillness and safe positioning may require sedation or general anesthesia when an animal is excitable, painful or too large to restrain manually. UC Davis notes that some pet radiographs can be performed with manual restraint, while its pet CT and MRI examinations use general anesthesia. The video’s reported anesthesia use should be understood as case-specific.

Is CT safer or better than an X-ray?

Neither modality is universally “better.” Radiography is a quick projection examination that can answer many bone, chest, abdominal, dental and sinus questions. CT uses multiple X-ray measurements to create cross-sections and can reveal more detail in complex anatomy. The veterinarian chooses based on the diagnostic question, patient and available facility.

What is established—and what remains unknown

It is established that veterinary institutions image zoo and wildlife animals and that large-animal radiography rooms can accommodate exceptionally large patients. It is also established that radiography and CT are distinct technologies with different image outputs and that anesthesia decisions depend on the animal and examination.

For the specific social-media footage, the lion’s identity, location, diagnosis, exact procedure and prognosis remain unverified. The most accurate answer to “Ever seen a lion get an X-ray?” is therefore: yes, lions can receive veterinary imaging, but the online post alone does not prove which scan that particular lion received or why.
